Book excerpt: High Performance Computing is an integrated computing environment for solving large-scale computational demanding problems in science, engineering and business. Newly emerging areas of HPC applications include medical sciences, transportation, financial operations and advanced human-computer interface such as virtual reality. High performance computing includes computer hardware, software, algorithms, programming tools and environments, plus visualization. The book addresses several of these key components of high performance technology and contains descriptions of the state-of-the-art computer architectures, programming and software tools and innovative applications of parallel computers. In addition, the book includes papers on heterogeneous network-based computing systems and scalability of parallel systems. The reader will find information and data relative to the two main thrusts of high performance computing: the absolute computational performance and that of providing the most cost effective and affordable computing for science, industry and business. The book is recommended for technical as well as management oriented individuals.

Book excerpt: On behalf of the NDT 2010 conference, the Program Committee and Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, we welcome you to the proceedings of the Second International Conference on ‘Networked Digital Technologies’ (NDT 2010). The NDT 2010 conference explored new advances in digital and Web technology applications. It brought together researchers from various areas of computer and information sciences who addressed both theoretical and applied aspects of Web technology and Internet applications. We hope that the discussions and exchange of ideas that took place will contribute to advancements in the technology in the near future. The conference received 216 papers, out of which 85 were accepted, resulting in an acceptance rate of 39%. These accepted papers are authored by researchers from 34 countries covering many significant areas of Web applications. Each paper was evaluated by a minimum of two reviewers. Finally, we believe that the proceedings document the best research in the studied areas. We express our thanks to the Charles University in Prague, Springer, the authors and the organizers of the conference.

Book excerpt: This book is a result of the ISD'97, Sixth International Conference on Information Systems Development-Methods and Tools, Theory and Practice held August 11-14, 1997 in Boise, Idaho, USA. The purpose of this Conference was to address the issues facing academia and industry when specifying, developing, managing and improving software systems. The selection of papers was carried out by the International Program Committee. All papers were reviewed in advance by at least three people. Papers were judged according to their originality, relevance and presentation quality. All papers were judged purely on their own merits, independently of other submissions. This year's Information Systems Development Conference-ISD'97 is the first ISD conference being held in the US. ISD was brought into existence almost ten years ago. It continues the fine tradition of the first Polish-Scandinavian Seminar on Current Trends in Information Systems Development Methodologies, held in Gdansk-Poland in 1988. ISD'98 will be held in Bled, Slovenia. ISD'97 consists not only of the technical program represented in these proceedings, but also tutorials on improved software testing and end-user information systems and workshop on sharing knowledge within international high technology industries that are intended for both, the research and business communities. We would like to thank the authors of papers accepted for ISD'97 who all made gal lant efforts to provide me with electronic copies of their manuscripts conforming to com mon guidelines. We thank them for thoughtfully responding to reviewers comments and carefully preparing their final contributions.

Book excerpt: Distributed applications are difficult to write as programmers need to adhere to specific distributed systems programming conventions and frameworks, which makes distributed systems development complex and error prone and ties the resultant application to the distributed system because the application's code is tangled with the crosscutting concern distribution. This book introduces the concept of a domain-specific aspect language called a Distribution Definition Language that generalises the distribution and distribution recovery concerns by describing the classes and methods of an existing application to be made remote, the distributed system to use to make them remote and the recovery mechanism to use in the event of an error. A software tool in the form of the RemoteJ compiler/generator that uses information contained in the Distribution Definition Language to generate the recovery and distributed system specific code and apply it to the application using bytecode manipulation and generation techniques is introduced. By allowing distribution and autonomic features, such as recovery, to be modularised and applied to existing applications this approach greatly simplifies distributed systems and autonomics development. This book is of particular interest to researchers and students of distributed systems, autonomics, domain-specific aspect languages and aspect-orientation.
