Book excerpt: "This book examines the complex transition of North Africa from the Late Roman period to the Arab conquest, focusing on three provinces: Zeugitana, Byzacena and Tripolitana. In particular, it considers the continuity and transformation of towns, as a result of economic, political and social changes. The period sees the wide diffusion of Christianity, the imposition of Vandal rule and Arianism, the presence of a new Empire and the Arab/Muslim takeover. It is also a period of archaeological and material transition: physically towns changed and classical structures, in particular, decayed and were reused. The evidence considered here encompasses a wide range of material, including publications from 1800 (Italian and French colonial excavations) to modern times. These data form the basis for a detailed review of archaeological evidence in this geographical area and for the analysis of the processes of evolution that characterised North African cities"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume charts the radical transformation of an inner city neighbourhood in late antique Carthage which was excavated over a five-year period by a team from the University of Cambridge. Bordering the main thoroughfare leading from the Brysa Hill to the ports, the neighbourhood remained primarily a residential one from the second century until 530s AD when a substantial basilica was constructed over the eastern half of the insula. Further extensive modifications were made to the basilica half-a-century later when the structures on the western half of the insula were demolished and the basilica greatly enlarged with the addition of a new east-west aisles, a large monumental baptistery and a crypt. By carefully reconstructing the complex architectural plan of this innovative building, this study shows how the re-modelled Bir Messaouda basilica was transformed into a major pilgrimage centre overturning established tradition that located such complexes outside the city walls. The Bir Messaouda basilica provides important insights into the transition between Vandal and Byzantine control of the city, the development of a new Christian inter-mural urban landscape in the sixth century AD, and the significance of the pilgrimage in reinforcing ecclesiastical authority in post-Justinianic North Africa.

Book excerpt: Roman Cities combines G. Michael Woloch's translation of Les villes romaines, Pierre Grimal's noted French work on Roman city planning, archeology, and urban history, with Woloch's additional notes and descriptions of the cities mentioned by Grimal, as well as other important Roman cities. The book provides a brief history and description of more than a hundred Roman cities, an extensive master bibliography, and a comprehensive glossary. Roman Cities will interest both scholars and students of Roman history and archeology, city planning, urban geography, and the social sciences. The glossary and bibliography make the book of value to specialists pursuing a particular topic and to students, history buffs, and amateur archaeologists seeking to broaden their understanding of the Roman city planning methods that are such an integral part of our modern urban heritage. Roman Cities provides the first comprehensive study in English of major Roman cities, including an excellent coverage of the Roman legacy which was transmitted to medieval and modern trends in architecture and urban planning..

The first volume contains letters from the year 250. The second volume covers the period from approximately high summer of 250 to mid-251. The third volume covers the period from mid-251 to 254, and reveal details of the persecution under Gallus, and the African Council meetings over the years 251-253. The fourth volume covers letters composed over the years 254-258, when Cyprian was martyred.

Book excerpt: This study focuses on the uses of the grammatical concept of etymologia in primarily Latin writings from the early Middle Ages. Etymologia is a fundamental procedure and discursive strategy in the philosophy and analysis of language in early medieval Latin grammar, as well as in Biblical exegesis, encyclopedic writing, theology, and philosophy. Read through the frame of poststructuralist analysis of discourse and the philosophy of science, the procedure of the ars grammatica are interpreted as overlapping genres (commentary, glossary, encyclopedia, exegesis) which use different verbal or extraverbal criteria to explain the origins and significations of words and which establish different epistemological frames within which an etymological account of language is situated. The study also includes many translations of heretofore untranslated passages from Latin grammatical and exegetical writings.

Book excerpt: As a background to this study of the Arians and Vandals in North Africa, and their impact on the Catholic Church, three books have been written recently by John Martyn, investigating the same period (late sixth century) and the same country. They are, firstly, Pope Gregory's Letters (published with commentary and translation by P.I.M.S, three vols, 2, 2004); see introduction pp 32-42 and epp 1.74, 2.36 and 11.7, and for the Manichean heresy, see epp 2.31, 5.7 and 6.14. Next, the Life of Saint Gregory, bishop of Agrigento (published with his commentary and translation by Edwin Mellen, 2004), is set in North Africa in chapters 7-30, and also covers the main schisms of that time. Finally, in a book on Saint Leander, Archbishop of Seville, soon to be published by Lexington Books, in Maryland, he shows that Leander's parents and baby sister were forced to flee from their home in Cartagena to Carthage, from where the Vandals had recently been expelled. Note also his review of L'Afrique Vandale et Byzantine: Ie Partie,' Paris, 2002, which was published in Parergon, 21,1,2004, pp 155-157, and involved a study of the same schisms, history and archaeology of North Africa.
