Download or read book Bullfighting written by and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ernest Hemingway, best-known to layman and aficionado alike, in his fiction described bullfighting, or "toreo, "as a cross between romantic risk and a drunken party, or as an elaborate substitute for war, ending in wounds or death. Although his descriptions of the "beauty"in "toreo "are lyrical, they are short on imaginative creation of how such beauty, through techniques and discipline, comes about. Hemingway may have sculpted a personal mystique of "toreo "but, in the opinion of some, he ignored or slighted the full, unique nature of the subject. In "Bullfighting: Art, Technique, and Spanish Society "John McCormick sorts through the complexities of "toreo, "to suggest the aesthetic, social, and moral dimensions of an art that is geographically limited, but universal when seen in round. While having felt the attraction of Hemingway's approach, McCormick knew that he was being seduced by elements that had little to do with "toreo. "To try to right Hemingway's distortions, he named the first edition of this book "The Complete Aficionado, "but then realized that the volume was directed at more than just the spectator: "BullFighting "is written from the point of view of the "torerro, "as opposed to the usual spectator's impressions and enthusiasm. With the help of a retired "matador de toros, "Mario Sevilla Mascarenas, who taught McCormick the rudiments of "toreo "as well as the emotions and discipline essential to survival, the authors rescue "'toreo "from romantic cliches. They probe the anatomy of the matador's training and technique, provide a past-and-present survey of the traditions of the "corrida, "and furnish dramatic portraits of such famous figures as Manolete, Joselito, Belmonte, and Ordonez. Here then is an informed analysis and critique of the origins and myths of "toreo "and a survey of the novels it has inspired. Defending the faith in a lively as well as clear and discerning manner, this volume provides a committed and vivid approach to the rich history, ritual, and symbolism of the bullfight as it currently exists.

Book Synopsis Spain's Struggle For Europe, 1598-1668 by : R. A. Stradling
Download or read book Spain's Struggle For Europe, 1598-1668 written by R. A. Stradling and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays contains an impressive body of the author's work on the history of Spain in the seventeenth century, which has focused particularly on the issues of high politics, international strategy and military infrastructure. The essays consistently illustrate R.A. Stradling's revisionist emphasis on aspects of the Spanish monarchy's 'survival', as opposed to orthodox treatments fixated upon 'decline'. The major questions about Spain in the period are all addressed: the quality of leadership, in particular that of Olivares and his master, Philip IV; the effect of war and the strains imposed by the demands of military provision; and the perception and reality of the 'decline'.Stimulating and immediate in style, the great majority of the essays are the result of sustained research work in the archives of Spain and other western European countries, as well as concentrated consideration of the broader contexts. They are all concerned to highlight interpretation and relevance in a way that enlivens the specific issues under review.
Book Synopsis The Roots of Francisco de Goya by : J. Carlos Arroyos
Download or read book The Roots of Francisco de Goya written by J. Carlos Arroyos and published by EBL Books. This book was released on 2022-12-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Roots of Francisco" de Goya describes the famous Spanish painter ́s beginnings in Aragon, the fertile ground which nurtured his soul and intelligence and bore his genius. Goya was born in 1746 in Fuendetodos, a small town in the province of Zaragoza, where he lived in a rural and family-centred community. He enjoyed the colourful scenery, which changed with the seasons, and participated in the region ́s frequent traditional festivals and ceremonies. Goya moved on to Zaragoza and Madrid, evolving as a prolific artist and painting many portraits of prominent figures of the era. As a witness to revolutionary times and tumult in Europe, Francisco de Goya enjoyed a life as colourful and interesting as the tapestries and paintings he masterfully created, yet he never forgot his roots in Fuendetodos.
Download or read book Defining Sport written by Shawn E. Klein and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-12-14 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defining Sport: Conceptions and Borderlines is not about the variations of usage of the term “sport.” It is about the concept, the range of activities in the world that we unite into one idea—sport. It is through the project of defining sport that we can come to understand these activities better, how they are similar or different, and how they relate to other human endeavors. This definitional inquiry, and the deeper appreciation and apprehension of sport that follows, is the core of this volume. Part I examines several of the standard and influential approaches to defining sport. Part II uses these approaches to examine various challenging borderline cases. These chapters examine the interplay of the borderline cases with the definition and provide a more thorough and clearer understanding of both the definition and the given cases. This work is not meant to be the definitive or exhaustive account of sport. It is meant to inspire further thought and debate on just what sport is; how it relates to other activities and human endeavors; and what we can learn about ourselves through the study of sport. This book will be of interest to scholars in philosophy of sport, history, communications, sociology, psychology, sports management, cultural studies, and physical education.

Book Synopsis Goya’s Graphic Imagination by : Mark McDonald
Download or read book Goya’s Graphic Imagination written by Mark McDonald and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2021-02-08 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first focused investigation of Francisco Goya's (1746–1828) graphic output. Spanning six decades, Goya’s works on paper reflect the transformation and turmoil of the Enlightenment, the Inquisition, and Spain's years of constitutional government. Two essays, a detailed chronology, and more than 100 featured artworks illuminate the remarkable breadth and power of Goya's drawings and prints, situating the artist within his historical moment. The selected pieces document the various phases and qualities of Goya's graphic work—from his early etchings after Velázquez through print series such as the Caprichos and The Disasters of War to his late lithographs, The Bulls of Bordeaux, and including albums of drawings that reveal the artist’s nightmares, dreams, and visions.
Book Synopsis Francisco de Goya and the Art of Critique by : Anthony J. Cascardi
Download or read book Francisco de Goya and the Art of Critique written by Anthony J. Cascardi and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-10 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An innovative study of Goya's unprecedented elaboration of the critical function of the work of art Francisco de Goya and the Art of Critique probes the relationship between the enormous, extraordinary, and sometimes baffling body of Goya’s work and the interconnected issues of modernity, Enlightenment, and critique. Taking exception to conventional views that rely mainly on Goya’s darkest images to establish his relevance for modernity, Cascardi argues that the entirety of Goya’s work is engaged in a thoroughgoing critique of the modern social and historical worlds, of which it nonetheless remains an integral part. The book reckons with the apparent gulf assumed to divide the Disasters of War and the so-called Black Paintings from Goya’s scenes of bourgeois life or from the well-mannered portraits of aristocrats, military men, and intellectuals. It shows how these apparent contradictions offer us a gateway into Goya’s critical practice vis-à-vis a European modernity typically associated with the Enlightenment values dominant in France, England, and Germany. In demonstrating Goya’s commitment to the project of critique, Cascardi provides an alternative to established readings of Goya’s work, which generally acknowledge the explicit social criticism evident in works such as the Caprichos but which have little to say about those works that do not openly take up social or political themes. In Francisco de Goya and the Art of Critique, Cascardi shows how Goya was consistently engaged in a critical response to—and not just a representation of—the many different factors that are often invoked to explain his work, including history, politics, popular culture, religion, and the history of art itself.
