An analysis of the People s Republic of China (PRC) shows the investment possibilities for foreign automotive manufactures. This research introduces the major opportunities and threats of political, social, economical, environmental, technological and legal dimensions within China. In the first part the Political System will be analysed by Christian Lutz. The historical and cultural roots are important to understand the political developments. The theoretical and actual politcal system and their problems will be shown. He also reflects the Social System with its different specifications. The current fall-back system with community health, retirement pension and unemployment will be analysed. Furthermore the potential opportunities and risks for automotive investors will be addressed. In the third part Economy Benjamin Pflüger point out that China is potentially the largest and one of the fatest-growing automotive markets in the world and therefore significant for all foreign automobile manufactures. There are both great opportunities and possible threats existing in China. The huge population, economic growth, increasing income and improved environment for consumers as well as China`s membership of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) are important for the future development of the global economy. This also leads to unavoidable consequences for the environment. The current situation and the environmental impact of China`s motorization, such as infrastructure shortage and air pollution, will be presented in sup-topic Environment . In the fifth chapter Technology Thorsten Iwanowski will introduce aspects of technology and technology management in China. As nowadays the main form of investment is the joint venture, this will be focused. The accelerating technological development within the last decades does not only generate advantages for the Chinese people. After having created several constitutions within the last 50 years, a modern and future oriented one has been passed. This constitution basing the new legal system will require fast and further legal rules and laws to meet the challenges of the Chinese future. These circumstances and their influence on the automobile industry will be pointed out in the part Legal System . The last years show an increasing volume of Foreign Invested Enterprises (FIE) within [...]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Element applies capability-architecture-performance (CAP) approach of industrial analysis to the evolution of the automobile industry and the strategies of its leading manufacturing firms between the late 19th century and the early 21st century. It regards a manufacturing site ('genba,' such as factory, development facility, etc.) and a product (and other economic artifacts, such as processes) as the two basic units of analysis. Both an industry and a firm can be seen as a collection of sites, as well as a collection of products. The CAP framework predicts that dynamic fits between the sites' organizational capabilities and the product/process architectures lead to sustainable competitive performance. Such key concepts as flows of value-carrying design information, productive/market/profit performance, design-based comparative advantage, integral/modular architectures, multi-skilling, coordinative capability-building, evolutionary capabilities, industry lifecycle, and architectural evolution are discussed in a systematic and dynamic way.

Book excerpt: One of the most important transformations in the world today is the adaptation to education and teaching methods that must be made to enhance the learning experience for Millennial and Generation Z students. The system in which the student is passive and the teacher is active is no longer the most effective form of education. Additionally, with the increased availability to information, knowledge transfer is no longer done solely by the teacher. Educators need to become moderators in order to promote effective teaching practices. Paradigm Shifts in 21st Century Teaching and Learning is an essential scholarly publication that examines new approaches to learning and their application in the teaching-learning process. Featuring a wide range of topics such as game-based learning, curriculum design, and sustainability, this book is ideal for teachers, curriculum developers, instructional designers, researchers, education professionals, administrators, academicians, educational policymakers, and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sets out a road map for the provision of urban access for all. For most of the last century cities have followed a path of dependency on car dominated urban transport favouring the middle classes. Urban Access for the 21st Century seeks to change this. Policies need to be more inclusive of the accessibility needs of the urban poor. Change requires redesigning the existing public finance systems that support urban mobility. The aim is to diminish their embedded biases towards automobile-based travel. Through a series of chapters from international contributors, the book brings together expertise from different fields. It shows how small changes can incentivize large positive developments in urban transport and create truly accessible cities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the war ended on August IS, 1945, I was a naval engineering cadet at the Kure Navy Yard near Hiroshima, Japan. A week later, I was demobi lized and returned to my home in Tokyo, fortunate not to find it ravaged by firebombing. At the beginning of September, a large contingent of the Ameri can occupation forces led by General Douglas MacArthur moved its base from Yokohama to Tokyo. Near my home I watched a procession of American mili tary motor vehicles snaking along Highway 1. This truly awe-inspiring cavalcade included jeeps, two-and-a-half-ton trucks, and enormous trailers mounted with tanks and artillery. At the time, I was a 21-year-old student in the Machinery Section of Engineering at the Tokyo Imperial University. Watching that mag nificent parade of military vehicles, I was more than impressed by the gap in industrial strength between Japan and the U. S. That realization led me to devote my whole life to the development of the Japanese auto industry. I wrote a small article concerning this incident in Nikkei Sangyo Shimbun (one of the leading business newspapers in Japan) on May 2, 1983. The English translation of this story was carried in the July 3, 1983 edition of the Topeka Capital-Journal and the September 13, 1983 issue of the Asian Wall Street Journal. The Topeka Capital-Journal headline read, "MacArthur's Jeeps Were the Toyota Catalyst.

Book excerpt: As China continues to ride out the global economic crisis while still retaining year on year GDP growth it is increasingly important to understand how this 'new' economic giant, with its communist-capitalist model operates its economic and business environments. This book is designed to scientifically examine the contextual variables that foster sustainably dynamic economic growth in China. In particular, the contributors provide an incisive analysis of the contextual bases underlying such a dramatic rising economic power and the immense implications for enterprises and countries involved in dealing with China. As such it will be essential reading for all students of Chinese business and economics, as well as businesses seeking to develop a critical understanding of the driving global economic force which is China.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding of the theories that underpin international political economy (IPE), and their practical applications, is crucial to the study of international relations, politics, development and economics. This is a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the field, with an engaging and coherent foundation to the subject. It considers traditional and alternative approaches to IPE, and in doing so elucidates key concepts, assumptions and the intellectual and historical context in which they arose and developed. At all times, it makes clear their relevance to issues from trade, finance and government, to environment, technology, health, labour, security, migration, development and culture. The book encourages independent reflection and critical thinking through a range of in-text guiding features. In addition, each chapter presents theoretical analysis alongside contemporary issues, helping the reader to relate to the real world of IPE and to better understand how theory helps inform interpretation of it. New to this edition: comprehensively updated to include key coverage of the post-2015 framework of the Sustainable Development Goals, the financial crisis and international government responses - successful or otherwise - to recent challenges; fully updated data, reflective questions, recommended readings, concept and example boxes, and illustrations; new chapters on health, migration and labour; additional coverage of trade theories and key contemporary issues, such as national versus human security, economic versus human development and illegal networks in global trade.
