Book Synopsis Par raison de nombres by : Guy Beaujouan
Download or read book Par raison de nombres written by Guy Beaujouan and published by Variorum Publishing. This book was released on 1991 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of this volume is the place of mathematics and science in the thought of the medieval West, notably during the 10th-14th centuries. The Quadrivium, part of the educational system of the Middle Ages, is discussed in the opening studies. These show how its original structure, and the division into the arts of arithmetic, music, geometry and astronomy, was reshaped, a process stimulated by the discovery of Arabic science and a new emphasis on the distinction between theoretical and practical learning. This theme, in the form of the relationship between theory and practice, is taken up again in the final articles. A further group of studies deals specifically with the development of arithmetic, looking in particular at the evolution and the use of numerals.

Book Synopsis In the Author's Hand: Holograph and Authorial Manuscripts in the Islamic Handwritten Tradition by : Frédéric Bauden

This book was released on 2019-12-16 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, a growing interest in “oriental manuscripts” in all their aspects, including the extrinsic ones, has been observed. Research that focuses on holograph, autograph and authorial manuscripts in Arabic handwritten script has nevertheless been casual, although these manuscripts raise important and varied questions. The study of the working methods of authors from the past informs different disciplines: paleography, codicology, textual criticism, ecdotics, linguistics and intellectual history. In this volume nine contributions and case studies are gathered that address theoretical issues and convey different, disruptive perspectives. A particularly important subject of this book, so far rarely discussed in scientific literature, is the identification of an author’s handwriting. Among the authors specifically dealt with in this volume one will find: al-Maqrīzī (m. 845/1442), al-Nuwayrī (m. 733/1333), Akmal al-Dīn b. Mufliḥ (m. 1011/1603), al-ʿAynī (m. 855/1451) and Ibn Khaldūn (m. 808/1406). Contributors: Frédéric Bauden, Julien Dufour, Élise Franssen, Adam Gacek, Retsu Hashizume, Marie-Hélène Marganne, Elias Muhanna, Nobutaka Nakamachi, Anne Regourd, and Kristina Richardson.

Book Synopsis Writing Sounds in Carolingian Europe by : Susan Rankin
Download or read book Writing Sounds in Carolingian Europe written by Susan Rankin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-08 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Musical notation has not always existed: in the West, musical traditions have often depended on transmission from mouth to ear, and ear to mouth. Although the Ancient Greeks had a form of musical notation, it was not passed on to the medieval Latin West. This comprehensive study investigates the breadth of use of musical notation in Carolingian Europe, including many examples previously unknown in studies of notation, to deliver a crucial foundational model for the understanding of later Western notations. An overview of the study of neumatic notations from the French monastic scholar Dom Jean Mabillon (1632–1707) up to the present day precedes an examination of the function and potential of writing in support of a musical practice which continued to depend on trained memory. Later chapters examine passages of notation to reveal those ways in which scripts were shaped by contemporary rationalizations of musical sound. Finally, the new scripts are situated in the cultural and social contexts in which they emerged.
