Book excerpt: Two rich and bored junior high school kids, John and Glenn, living in a little town in Texas, decided that they had to do something spectacular, an event that they would remember for the rest of their life, and yes, it eventually turned out that way. What they had in mind was against the law. It was depraved and immoral enough that it could ruin somebodys life forever. The victim that they had selected was, unfortunately for them, not somebody you could mess with without some serious repercussions and revenge. Her life so far was not a bed of roses, and she had to struggle to stay above water. She was alone and on the streets of New Orleans when she was sixteen years old. Her parents were killed when the hurricane Katrina hit the town. The boys parents were the richest and most powerful citizens in their little town. Minor infractions of the law were never enforced, and this made them forget that some events were still against the law abd that it was indecent behavior and would have them punished if caught. This story will make you want to read all the incredible, strange, scary, and wonderful events that the boys and girls have to go through. The story is at the same level of vicious, tender, and dramatic. It will make you angry and upset and, maybe, make you even cry and feel good. Its a novel where the author cant tell you too much in this synopsis without ruining the story. I hope you will have the time and desire to read this book. People who did read the book find it to be very entertaining, creative, and passionate, and they find it very hard to put down.

Book excerpt: When fantasy & reality collide, will it be everything Snake hopes for or everything Greg fears? The trick'll be staying alive long enough to find out. As a secret agent for the DEA, Snake’s gone deep into Devils Pride MC with the hope of bringing down the head of Miami’s lucrative drug trade and finds himself saddled with the club’s volatile and secretive SA instead. Unfortunately, after years as partners doing shit neither of them wanted to do for reasons neither of them felt comfortable sharing, Snake considers Trick his best friend. Now he’ll do anything to repair the damage his own necessary lies did to their friendship because, while Trick may have walked away from the MC, Snake needs someone he trusts to have his back. Meanwhile, Snake’s contact at the DEA has him tied up in knots. The sexy voice and inappropriate comments have him walking around with a permanent set of blue balls. Life undercover is lonely and he lives for every phone call, but his own personal Deep Throat is skittish about committing to a date once Snake returns to headquarters. As far as Snake’s concerned, they only have one shot to build something together and he’s not willing to waste it. Greg knows he’s not Snake’s type, or anyone’s for that matter. Former love interests called him plain, chubby, and boring. More comfortable in his tech cave than with people, he’s a grade-A nerd who isn’t exactly GQ material. Normally he would never be brave enough to flirt with anyone—much less the very hot and very dangerous ginger who’d been starring in his nightly fantasies—but Snake needed something to keep him from getting lost undercover. What started out as a helping hand quickly became an integral part of their relationship—if one could call a five year phone conversation a relationship—and Greg is terrified that once Snake’s sees the wizard behind the curtain, he’ll lose the only man he’s ever loved. Now the DEA has called Snake home to plan the next stage of the mission, leaving Greg no more places to hide. When fantasy and reality collide, will it be everything Snake hopes for or everything Greg fears? The trick will be staying alive long enough to figure out the answer.

Book excerpt: What was it like for the former American colony, the islands of the Philippines, waking up one day in September 1972 and all the democratic institutions had ceased functioning, replaced by a military dictatorship? What was it like for the men and women, especially the women, who had the misfortune of being on the dictator Marcoss vaunted list of enemies and subversives? And what was it like when the Marcos dictatorship finally crumbled, laid waste by a housewife who had acted as a giant killer seeking to break the shackles that had bound the Filipino people hand and foot and in the process finding restitution for the murder of her husband? And how sweet was the sweet bird of revenge (to borrow from playwright Tennessee Williams) when a posse was formed to hunt down the soldiers responsible for the torture and rape of the captured enemies of the state? This is an epic story of the struggle between good and evil. It is also the story of two friends: Gus Liloan and Vic Lucero. Liloan, a man stranded in a foreign land, unable to return to his country, where a police state awaited him, should have gotten his wish as circumstances changed, but he could not find the will to abandon America, partly because he realized that he had already found a new home. But his dream of going home would not die. It had been merely shelved in a remote corner of his soul. Vic Lucero, one of the soldiers charged with the interrogation and torture of political prisoners during the Marcos dictatorship, went into hiding and incognito ownership of a piggery after the dictatorship unraveled.

Book excerpt: A mother and her adult, drug-addicted son struggle for redemption and recovery in this “dark debut” novel that “has the power to lift and inspire” (Publishers Weekly). Night Navigation opens on a freezing-rain night in upstate New York: the kindling gone, the fire in the woodstove out. Retired high-school art teacher Del Merrick’s thirty-seven-year-old manic-depressive son, Mark, needs a ride, but she’s afraid to make the long drive north to the only detox that has a bed. Through each of the four seasons, Night Navigation takes readers into the deranged, darkly humorous world of the addict—from break-your-arm dealers, to boot-camp rehabs, to Rumi-quoting NA sponsors. Mark can’t find a way to live in this world; Del can’t stop trying to rescue him. And yet, during this long year’s night, through relapse and despair, Mark and Del see flare-ups of hope as they fitfully, painfully try to steer toward the light. Told in the alternating voices of an addict and his mother, this “harrowing . . . cathartic” novel adds new depths to our understanding and literature of parents and their troubled children (Kirkus Reviews).

Jillian is desperate to hold on to her best friend when so much else is changing. But as she and Henry explore what—and who—they really want, it becomes harder to hold on to the careful definitions she has always lived her life by. This book was released on 2012-10-12 with total page 995 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Research Design in Mathematics and Science Education is based on results from an NSF-supported project (REC 9450510) aimed at clarifying the nature of principles that govern the effective use of emerging new research designs in mathematics and science education. A primary goal is to describe several of the most important types of research designs that: * have been pioneered recently by mathematics and science educators; * have distinctive characteristics when they are used in projects that focus on mathematics and science education; and * have proven to be especially productive for investigating the kinds of complex, interacting, and adapting systems that underlie the development of mathematics or science students and teachers, or for the development, dissemination, and implementation of innovative programs of mathematics or science instruction. The volume emphasizes research designs that are intended to radically increase the relevance of research to practice, often by involving practitioners in the identification and formulation of the problems to be addressed or in other key roles in the research process. Examples of such research designs include teaching experiments, clinical interviews, analyses of videotapes, action research studies, ethnographic observations, software development studies (or curricula development studies, more generally), and computer modeling studies. This book's second goal is to begin discussions about the nature of appropriate and productive criteria for assessing (and increasing) the quality of research proposals, projects, or publications that are based on the preceding kind of research designs. A final objective is to describe such guidelines in forms that will be useful to graduate students and others who are novices to the fields of mathematics or science education research. The NSF-supported project from which this book developed involved a series of mini conferences in which leading researchers in mathematics and science education developed detailed specifications for the book, and planned and revised chapters to be included. Chapters were also field tested and revised during a series of doctoral research seminars that were sponsored by the University of Wisconsin's OERI-supported National Center for Improving Student Learning and Achievement in Mathematics and Science. In these seminars, computer-based videoconferencing and www-based discussion groups were used to create interactions in which authors of potential chapters served as "guest discussion leaders" responding to questions and comments from doctoral students and faculty members representing more than a dozen leading research universities throughout the USA and abroad. A Web site with additional resource materials related to this book can be found at http://www.soe.purdue.edu/smsc/lesh/ This internet site includes directions for enrolling in seminars, participating in ongoing discussion groups, and submitting or downloading resources which range from videotapes and transcripts, to assessment instruments or theory-based software, to publications or data samples related to the research designs being discussed.

Book excerpt: Set behind enemy lines in Burma, this New York Times bestseller is “easily one of the best novels to come out of World War II” (Los Angeles Times). American soldiers and native Kachin troops battle Japanese forces behind enemy lines in the Burmese jungles. But during the brutal campaign to gain territory in the unforgiving tropical landscape, Captain Reynolds and his band of special operations soldiers and guerrilla fighters struggle to find self-awareness, and even love, in the midst of the trials of combat. One of the youngest officers to serve in Merrill’s Marauders and OSS Detachment 101—precursors to the Green Berets and Central Intelligence Agency—author Tom T. Chamales brings an unparalleled level of authentic detail and raw intensity to this work of fiction based on his real-life experience in the jungles of Southeast Asia. Never So Few is “an extraordinary and powerful book,” unflinching in its portrayal of wartime sacrifice and violence (Kirkus Reviews, starred). The basis for the movie starring Frank Sinatra and Steve McQueen, it offers “dramatic, exciting, and concretely detailed accounts of battle action,” and joins the ranks of other classic war novels such as From Here to Eternity and The Naked and the Dead in bringing later generations to the frontlines and into the inner lives of the brave men who served (The New York Times).
