Book excerpt: Will she obey? Will she follow? Can she trust? Can she succeed? Tachee, the last of the mantii race, faces these questions as she begins her journey. She is constantly being taught and trained; but for what? She wonders, and she prays... Tachee awakes one morning to find her usual routine and lone companion are taken away suddenly. In the elvish city, Un Wava, Tachee begins discovering her skills, learns a history she never knew, and develops much longed for friends. She finds contentment, when she is called to leave it all behind, and by someone Tachee never thought she would encounter. Unsure of herself but discontent to stay, she chooses to obey and embarks on a journey that both reveals and develops her true character. Danger, excitement, rest and friendship await her on a journey through a land full of secrets, darkness and enemies. However, light is coming... Athena Taylor Lester is a home school student who loves reading, and particularly enjoys fantastical fiction. She started writing at an early age, and at 13 decided to try her hand at writing a full-scale fantasy novel. Her passion is to write stories that are not bogged down with superfluous spooks or false ideas frequently found in fantasy novels. In contrast, her desire is to write enjoyable adventures wherein her readers are left encouraged and with themes reinforcing truth. In all of her novels (this one and the ones still in her head) she strives for messages reflecting truth and inspiration to press on toward the mark set before us. Athena lives in North Central Arkansas and she wants everyone to know her favorite color is pink.

Book excerpt: What if charisma could be taught? The charisma myth is the idea that charisma is a fundamental, inborn quality—you either have it (Bill Clinton, Steve Jobs, Oprah) or you don’t. But that’s simply not true, as Olivia Fox Cabane reveals. Charismatic behaviors can be learned and perfected by anyone. Drawing on techniques she originally developed for Harvard and MIT, Cabane breaks charisma down into its components. Becoming more charismatic doesn’t mean transforming your fundamental personality. It’s about adopting a series of specific practices that fit in with the personality you already have. The Charisma Myth shows you how to become more influential, more persuasive, and more inspiring.

DOI: 10.1007/s11214-008-9474-5 © Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2008 The Earth, like all the other planets, is continuously bombarded by the solar wind, which is variable on many time scales owing to its connection to the activity of the Sun. But the Earth is unique among planets because its atmosphere, magnetic eld, and rotation rates are each signi cant, though not dominant, players in the formation of its magnetosphere and its reaction to solar-wind inputs. An intriguing fact is that no matter what the time scale of solar-wind variations, the Earth’s response has a de nite pattern lasting a few hours. Known as a magnetospheric substorm, the response involves a build-up, a crash, and a recovery. The build-up (known as the growth phase) occurs because of an interlinking of the geom- netic eld and the solar-wind magnetic eld known as magnetic reconnection, which leads to storage of increasing amounts of magnetic energy and stress in the tail of the mag- tosphere and lasts about a half hour. The crash (known as the expansion phase) occurs when the increased magnetic energy and stresses are impulsively relieved, the current system that supports the stretched out magnetic tail is diverted into the ionosphere, and bright, dynamic displays of the aurora appear in the upper atmosphere. The expansion and subsequent rec- ery phases result from a second magnetic reconnection event that decouples the solar-wind and geomagnetic elds.

An updated, expanded edition. By 2045 Latinos will make up 1 in 4 Americans. They are projected to be 78% of the new entries into the labor force in the next ten years. By sheer numbers alone, Latinos will shape the 21st Century. What does it take to lead such a varied and vibrant people who hail from twenty-six countries and are a blend of different races? And what can leaders of all cultures and ethnicities learn from how Latinos lead? Juana Bordas takes us on a journey to the very heart and soul of Latino leadership. She offers 10 principles that richly illustrate the inclusive, people-centered, socially responsible, and life-affirming ways Latinos have led their community. This model is uniquely suited to this century's multicultural, global age. This new and expanded edition includes a chapter on intergenerational leadership that recognizes vast generational shifts are occurring: ten thousand Baby Boomers retire every day and Millennials and Zs are the largest generations in history. It will hopefully instill confidence into the readers and show them that any situation has a solution and there is no need to be embarrassed about anything that they are faced with. They are encouraged, in this book, to talk about their problems to their peers, friends, or someone older when it's something that weighs down on them and affects their life negatively. Follow six girls on their journey as they discover how interesting it is to grow up, and you may find that you relate to one of the girls more than the others. I know I did.

When yet another secret from her past comes back to haunt her, will she be able to trust him with everything or will he be the worst enemy of all? On Delroi he’s thrust into the light. Kayna Idis has a serious problem. She’s in love with the wrong man. Razor Deriq is everything she always wanted. Strong and steadfast. Sexy and fun. Then Sergei enters her life just as compelling in his own way. He’s dark and mysterious. Hard and unflinching. And she wonders if she can have them both. Razor is determined to keep them both, but first he needs to find and eliminate the warriors threatening Kayna. Pairing up with Sergei for the task gives him the perfect opportunity for seduction, but will Sergei ever lower his shields enough to let him and Kayna in? DARK WARRIOR Angie Crews has secrets. Lots of them. Coming to Delroi and meeting two men who want her to break all her rules is not happening, no matter how tempting they are. Vidar Stian can’t come to terms with his past, and finding two mates he’s driven to protect, no matter the danger, isn’t helping. Especially when they refuse to be protected. Somehow Marek Naveen has to convince them to give a relationship a chance because there’s no way he’s letting either one of them go. STAR WARRIOR Cassius Stian has come to Earth to take over its defenses against the galaxy’s new enemy, the Faelis Consortium. The last thing he expects on his arrival is to meet his mate. General Talia Lowell isn’t quite sure what to do with the alien warrior who barges into her life, but since he refuses to budge from his insistence she’s his mate, she figures she might as well enjoy it while it lasts. Cassius has other plans, however. He’s here to stay. LOST WARRIOR When Reza Stian receives word that the mate he’s refused to claim has been kidnapped by a faction of her clan, he can’t sit back and do nothing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the self-adaptability of systems has been studied in a wide range of disciplines, from biology to robotics, only recently has the software engineering community recognized its key role in enabling the development of future software systems that are able to self-adapt to changes that may occur in the system, its requirements, or the environment in which it is deployed. The 12 carefully reviewed papers included in this state-of-the-art survey originate from the International Seminar on Software Engineering for Self-Adaptive Systems, held in Dagstuhl Castle, Germany, in January 2008. They examine the current state-of-the-art in the field, describing a wide range of approaches coming from different strands of software engineering, and present future challenges facing this ever-resurgent and challenging field of research. Also included in this book is an invited roadmap paper on the research challenges facing self-adaptive systems within the area of software engineering, based on discussions at the Dagstuhl Seminar and put together by several of its participants. The papers have been divided into topical sections on architecture-based self-adaptation, context-aware and model-driven self-adaptation, and self-healing. These are preceded by three research roadmap papers.
