The traffickers come back for another run so Jack uses his deer rifle to fend off the drug plane. The shooter drops a cellphone loaded with images and information that Jack gives to the DEA. Several months later, Jack’s plane lands in Minneapolis and picks up what he thinks is his bag: it’s the right color, right shape and has his “J.L.” initials on it. He opens the bag—the combination is one number off—to discover it is filled with woman’s clothing. So begins an adventure that pits a vet and a medical sales rep against two murderous drug cartels. But is everything, and everyone, as they seem? Find out in Caribbean Nightmare.

Book excerpt: This history for the first time charts the literature of the entire Caribbean, the islands as well as continental littoral, as one cultural region. It breaks new ground in establishing a common grid for reading literatures that have been kept separate by their linguistic frontiers. Readers will have access to the best current scholarship on the evolution of popular and literate cultures in the various regions since their earliest emergence."The History of Literature in the Caribbean" brings together the most distinguished team of literary Caribbeanists ever assembled, cutting across ideological commitments and critical methods. Differences in point of view between individual contributors are left intact here as the sign of the colonial inheritance of the region. Introductions and conclusions to the various sections of the History written by the respective subeditors, set them in proper perspective. The unique synoptic aspect of the History lies in its comprehensiveness and its range, which are unequaled."Contributors" A. James Arnold, Julio Rodriguez-Luis, H. Book excerpt: REVIEW in UK by Graham Owen. 5-stars..*****...Excellent just wish it was longer Several 5-star ***** ratings on Goodreads. WARNING: Segments could be offensive and are intended for the mature reader. If you are of a prudish nature, this story is not for you. Human trafficking is becoming more of a problem. It's a matter of supply and demand, perhaps a matter of a deteriorating society. Although this is a story of fiction, it has been inspired by events documented on the Internet and TV. A young Florida woman becomes involved with drug runners. She is subsequently kidnapped by a more experienced and vicious gang, a group that brings out her suppressed sadistic side. They expand their misdeeds to include modern-day Caribbean piracy and sex slavery. As their operation expands into the Dutch Antilles, it becomes a human trafficking business. Excerpt: Mira now had on her life-jacket and pondered jumping into the dark waters, miles from anywhere. Before she could work up the courage, their boat was boarded and she was promptly subdued. "Who are you guys? What do you want?" she asked in a futile manner. "Shut up, bitch!" one of them shouted as he punched her in the face...... As she began to regain her senses, she felt pain in her arms and could sense they were back on land. She quickly discovered that she had been strung up and was hanging from a ceiling beam. - - - Everyone grew silent as they stood staring at the two nude sisters, dimly lit up by the nighttime moonlight..... "I've never seen such beautiful girls," one of them marveled. "They look like a matched set, so perfectly curved and so virginal. The moonlight makes it feel romantic." .... Well, what do you say, boys? Wanna play with the toys? A girl can get self-conscious when she's naked and being ignored. You don't want to be rude do you, fellas? - - - Mira fired the taser and the woman yelled out in agony. "Oh, this is fun!" she exclaimed. "I'm glad this place is soundproof." - - - The next morning, the Pirate Queen's photograph would be on the front page of every newspaper coast to coast. The video of her standing on the table shouting out her name, firing off the rounds, killing the security guard and giving orders, would make every national TV newscast. Her infamy would soon be at its peak. - - - "The Dutch Antilles have loose regulations regarding prostitution. That's the area called the ABC Islands, Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao. They are territories of the Netherlands. Although they have lots of laws on prostitution, regulations are routinely abused, ignored. We could do things like before, entice attractive applicants for waitress and domestic jobs, pay airfare and lodging, and then hand them a bill, make them indentured servants. We take their passports and cut off their communication. - - - Excerpt: A large metal shipping container sat in the yard, and everyone was loaded inside, the large heavy door secured behind them. It was only minutes later when they felt themselves being loaded onto a flatbed truck. Bound and gagged, they all exchanged a look of horror. - - - The men we took will be harvested for body parts on the black market, kidneys sold for a quarter-million dollars, hearts and livers over a hundred thousand each. Unless you become more cooperative, the same will happen to you! It's called a nephrectomy, but since surgery doesn't always go well, I prefer to sell my girls in one piece. - - - "Allie, I will share a history lesson with you. In the thirteenth century, the Egyptians defeated the Libyans in battle. They cut off over thirteen thousand penises, because they felt it sent a powerful psychological message. Let's see what just one does." He pulled out a knife. - - He now had three hundred girls bringing in an average of nearly fifteen hundred dollars a day. - - -

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horror Fiction in the Global South: Cultures, Narratives, and Representations believes that the experiences of horror are not just individual but also/simultaneously cultural. Within this understanding, literary productions become rather potent sites for the relation of such experiences both on the individual and the cultural front. It's not coincidental, then, that either William Blatty's The Exorcist or Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude become archetypes of the re-presentations of the way horror affects individuals placed inside different cultures. Such an affectation, though, is but a beginning of the ways in which the supernatural interacts with the human and gives rise to horror. Considering that almost all aspects of what we now designate as the Global North, and its concomitant, the Global South – political, historical, social, economic, cultural, and so on – function as different paradigms, the experiences of horror and their telling in stories become functionally different as well. Added to this are the variations that one nation or culture of the east has from another. The present anthology of essays, in such a scheme of things, seeks to examine and demonstrate these cultural differences embedded in the impact that figures of horror and specters of the night have on the narrative imagination of storytellers from the Global South. If horror has an everyday presence in the phenomenal reality that Southern cultures subscribe to, it demands alternative phenomenology. The anthology allows scholars and connoisseurs of Horror to explore theoretical possibilities that may help address precisely such a need.

Book excerpt: "Situating Caribbean Literature and Criticism in Multicultural and Postcolonial Studies is a pioneer in advancing the difficult but necessary argument of situating and centering Caribbean literature and criticism at the foundation of multicultural and postcolonial studies through an interdisciplinary, international, and intercultural manner, made possible by the author's unique multicultural and transnational interest and experience. Situating Caribbean Literature and Criticism in Multicultural and Postcoloniai Studies argues that Caribbean criticism - shaped by the region's socio-economic, political, and historical phenomenahas a more complex and significant marriage with postcolonial and multicultural studies than acknowledged by the international community. Caribbean scholars should not only seek to legitimize and publicize the marriage and its depth, but also expand the borders of its scholarship and protest its "disneyfication" and prostitution."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Positioning the Caribbean within the complexes of the world community, this collection uses the metaphor of the global Caribbean to discuss the multiple movements, identities, epistemologies and politics of the West Indies. Examining the processes of the transnational transport of peoples, languages, and literatures between the Caribbean, Africa, Europe, and North America, the essays look at the complexities of geographical, intellectual, and artistic migrations: at the ways Caribbean writers negotiate the construction of literary and political identities and the ways in which the Caribbean influenced writers and thinkers in North America or Europe. These kinds of reciprocal exchanges locate the islands of the Caribbean within a global context, as recipients of multi- and trans-national influence and as makers of transnational meaning. Building on the dynamic processes of globalization, this collection suggests that the Caribbean provides a perspective for thinking about multiple intercultural connections with the Caribbean that include antebellum New Englanders, the Jews of twentieth-century Europe, literary artists of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century England and France, and modern pleasure seekers. A culturally and linguistically rich region of the world, the Caribbean also provides a fascinating literature of its own that is complicated by its history of migration and colonization, as well as by its location between continents.

While the Nazi Party gains steam, Luther dives into his studies at the University of Bonn, marries his longtime girlfriend, Sigrid, and eventually focuses on fatherhood as his three sons are born. After Luther decides to join the military, he must not only survive the war but also keep his true views of the Nazis close to his chest. But as Luthers path crosses with those of his villainous foes, he is guided by his character to perform heroic feats that exceed expectations and shine a light on friendships that can survive even war. Book excerpt: When the SS Empire Windrush berthed at Tilbury docks in 1948 with 492 ex-servicemen from the Caribbean, it marked the beginning of the post-war migrations to Britain that would form part of modern, multi-cultural Britain. A significant role in this social transformation would be played by the literary and non-literary output of writers from the Caribbean. These writers in exile were responsible not just for the establishment of the West Indian novel, but, by virtue of their location in the Mother Country, were also the pioneers of black writing in Britain. Over the next fifty years, this writing would come to represent an important body of work intimately aligned to the evolving and contentious notions of 'home' as economic migration became a permanent presence. In this book, David Ellis provides in-depth analyses of six key figures whose writing charts the establishment of black Britain. For Sam Selvon, George Lamming, and E. R. Braithwaite, writing home represents a literature of reappraisal as the myths of empire—the gold-paved streets of London—conflict with the harsh realities of being designated an immigrant. The unresolved consequences of this reappraisal are made evident in the works of Andrew Salkey, Wilson Harris, and Linton Kwesi Johnson where radicalism in both political and literary terms can be read as a response to the rejection of the black communities by an increasingly divided Britain in the 1970s. Finally, the novels of Caryl Phillips, Joan Riley, and David Dabydeen mark an increasingly reflective literature as the notion of home shifts more explicitly from the Caribbean to Britain itself. Containing both contextual and biographical information throughout, "Writing Home" represents a literary and social history of the emergence of black Britain in the second half of the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: Exhibiting Slavery examines the ways in which Caribbean postmodern historical novels about slavery written in Spanish, English, and French function as virtual museums, simultaneously showcasing and curating a collection of "primary documents" within their pages. As Vivian Nun Halloran attests, these novels highlight narrative "objects" extraneous to their plot—such as excerpts from the work of earlier writers, allusions to specific works of art, the uniforms of maroon armies assembled in preparation of a military offensive, and accounts of slavery's negative impact on the traditional family unit in Africa or the United States. In doing so, they demand that their readers go beyond the pages of the books to sort out fact from fiction and consider what relationship these featured "objects" have to slavery and to contemporary life. The self-referential function of these texts produces a "museum effect" that simultaneously teaches and entertains their readers, prompting them to continue their own research beyond and outside the text.
