Book excerpt: This authoritative study explores the relation of John Henry Newman's idea of conscience to what he called conscience "in the ordinary sense of the word." Grave argues that a proper understanding of this distinction is essential to a satisfactory understanding of Newman's thought wherever the notion of conscience enters into it. He examines some neglected difficulties in this area such as the relation between individual conscience and the authority of the church, and the matter of rights of conscience.

Routledge is an imprint of Taylor & Francis, an informa company.

Book Synopsis A Catholic Christian Meta-Model of the Person by : William J. Nordling
Download or read book A Catholic Christian Meta-Model of the Person written by William J. Nordling and published by . This book was released on 2020-03-09 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Catholic Christian Meta-Model of the Person integrates the insights of three wisdom traditions--the psychological sciences, philosophy, and theology--to provide a framework for understanding the person. The Meta-Model develops a more systematic, integrative, and non-reductionist vision of the person, marriage, family, and society than is found in any of these three disciplines alone. The Meta-Model is a unifying framework for the integration of already-existing personality theories and therapeutic models. In addition, it enhances assessment, diagnosis, case conceptualization, and treatment planning by addressing eleven essential dimensions of the person needed in mental health practice aimed at healing and flourishing. The book also explores how the Meta-Model framework can improve client care. Finally, it demonstrates how the Meta-Model assists mental health professionals to better understand how they can be faithful to their Christian identity as they serve all clients--Christians, persons from other faiths, and non-believers.

Book Synopsis Psychology and Religion Within an Ideological Surround by : Paul J. Watson
Download or read book Psychology and Religion Within an Ideological Surround written by Paul J. Watson and published by Brill Research Perspectives in. This book was released on 2019 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over three decades, an Ideological Surround Model (ISM) has pursued theoretical and methodological innovations designed to enhance the 'truth' and 'objectivity' of research into psychology and religion. The foundational argument of the ISM is that psychology as well as religion unavoidably operates within the limits of an ideological surround. Methodological theism, therefore, needs to supplement the methodological atheism that dominates the contemporary social sciences. Methodological theism should operationalize the meaningfulness of religious traditions and demonstrate empirically that the influences of ideology cannot be ignored. The ISM more generally suggests that contemporary social scientific rationalities need to be supplemented my more complex dialogical rationalities. Beliefs in secularization should also be supplemented by beliefs in trans-rationality.
