Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Church leaders and their contrasting opinions in the face of the Great War Cardinal Désiré-Joseph Mercier, Archbishop of Malines, was the incarnation of the Belgian resistance against the German occupation during the First World War. With his famous pastoral letter of Christmas 1914 ‘Patriotisme et Endurance’ he reached a wide audience, and gained international influence and respect. Mercier’s distinct patriotic stance clearly determined his views of national politics, especially of the 'Flemish question', and his conflict with the German occupier made him a hero of the Allies. The Germans did not always know how to handle this influential man of the Church. Pope Benedict XV did not always approve of the course of action adopted by the Belgian prelate. Whereas Mercier justified the war effort as a just cause in view of the restoration of Belgium's independence, the Pope feared that "this useless massacre" meant nothing but the "suicide of civilized Europe”. Through a critical analysis of the policies of Cardinal Mercier and Pope Benedict XV, this book sheds revealing light on the contrasting positions of Church leaders in the face of the Great War.

Download or read book The Virgin Mary, Mediatrix of All Graces written by Gloria Falcão Dodd and published by Academy of the Immaculate. This book was released on 2012 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mariology of the 20th century got a decisive stimulus by the movement for the dogmatic definition of Mary’s social function as “Mediatrix of all Graces.” Gloria Falcão Dodd gives a synthetic, historical overview of the development from 1896 until the proclamation of the Marian chapter of “Lumen gentium” in 1964. She also analyzes the theological arguments for and against the dogmatic definition. Her very useful work is indispensable for anyone who wants to receive the most recent basic information about the most disputed topic of modern Mariology. - Rev. Dr. Manfred Hauke
Book Synopsis The Story of Bioethics by : Jennifer K. Walter
Download or read book The Story of Bioethics written by Jennifer K. Walter and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2003-10-08 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This literally "refreshing" collection is based on the notion that the future of bioethics is inseparable from its past. Seminal works provide a unique and relatively unexplored vehicle for investigating not only where bioethics began, but where it may be going as well. In this volume, a number of the pioneers in bioethics—Tom Beauchamp, Lisa Sowle Cahill, James Childress, Charles E. Curran, Patricia King, H. Tristram Engelhardt, William F. May, Edmund D. Pellegrino, Warren Reich, Robert Veatch and LeRoy Walters—reflect on their early work and how they fit into the past and future of bioethics. Coming from many disciplines, generations, and perspectives, these trailblazing authors provide a broad overview of the history and current state of the field. Invaluable to anyone with a serious interest in the development and future of bioethics, at a time when new paths into medical questions are made almost daily, The Story of Bioethics is a Baedeker beyond compare.
