Book Synopsis French Liberalism and Imperialism in the Age of Napoleon III by : Miquel de la Rosa
Download or read book French Liberalism and Imperialism in the Age of Napoleon III written by Miquel de la Rosa and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-25 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the interplay between liberalism and imperialism in Second Empire France. By examining the political dimension of imperial expansion and the power of words in shaping public opinion, it sheds light on the ways in which liberal ideas developed in the nineteenth century. In contrast to Britain, French imperialism in the third quarter of the nineteenth century was fostered by a Bonapartist regime that liberals needed to fight in order to build their own political brand. The author argues that the 1860s were not so much a period of ‘liberal empire’ in France as has traditionally been suggested, since liberals were in fact more conveyers of political change rather than supporters of the regime. To demonstrate how French liberals succeeded in configuring an alternative political option, the book explores their attitudes to the expanding colonial empire of Napoleon III in the 1850s and 60s through the analysis of parliamentary debates, the press and published texts. Providing three in-depth case studies on Bonapartist expansion projects in Algeria, Cochinchina and Mexico, the book provides new insights on the foundations of the liberal position on imperialism, and the intellectual outlooks and belief systems that informed these views. Analysing discourses and ideas, as opposed to facts and policies, this book presents a new perspective on the nature of the French Second Empire and illustrates how this shaped a specific liberal political culture in France.
Book Synopsis A History of Christianity in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, 1450-1990 by : Roland Spliesgart
Download or read book A History of Christianity in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, 1450-1990 written by Roland Spliesgart and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2007-09-14 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In cooperation with Roland Spliesgart The map of world Christianity has changed dramatically in just the last century. Today the majority of Christians live in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, making Christianity a world religion as never before in history. Given that global reality, Klaus Koschorke, Frieder Ludwig, and Mariano Delgado have created the first comparative documentary history of Christianity for these regions covering the period 1450–1990. Taking the changing ecumenical conditions into account, this volume enlarges the horizon of classical church historiography. In contrast to the prevailing Western perspectives on the history of Christianity in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, voice is given here to the multitude of local initiatives, specific experiences, and varieties of Christianity in very diverse cultural contexts -- addressing such questions as the colonial conquest, slavery, and the demand for ecclesiastical independence.
Book Synopsis Heroic imperialists in Africa by : Berny Sèbe
Download or read book Heroic imperialists in Africa written by Berny Sèbe and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the height of ‘New Imperialism’ until the Second World War, three generations of heroes of the British and French empires in Africa were selected, manufactured and packaged for consumption by a metropolitan public eager to discover new horizons and to find comfort in the concept of a ‘civilising mission’. This book looks at imperial heroism by examining the legends of a dozen major colonial figures on both sides of the Channel, revisiting the familiar stories of Livingstone, Gordon and Kitchener from a radically new angle, and throwing light on their French counterparts, often less famous in the Anglophone world but certainly equally fascinating.
