Book excerpt: For all courses in basic or introductory cardiography Focused coverage and realistic hands-on practice help students master basic arrhythmias Basic Arrhythmias, Eighth Edition, gives beginning students a strong basic understanding of the common, uncomplicated rhythms that are a foundation for further learning and success in electrocardiography. Concepts are presented in a flexible, progressive approach to allow for self-paced or classroom learning. Chapters cover basic electrophysiology, waves and measurements, rhythm analysis, and the five major groups of arrhythmias. Basic Arrhythmias includes appendices on Clinical Implications, Cardiac Anatomy and Physiology, 12-Lead Electrocardiography, Basic 12-Lead Interpretation, and Pathophysiology of Arrhythmias. Practice EKG rhythm strips are included in most chapters to give students extensive, realistic hands-on practice--the single most important element in developing arrhythmia interpretation skills. Book excerpt: “This book will be instantly enjoyed by electrophysiologists at all career stages as it communicates highly relevant information and provides an ‘instant check’ of one’s knowledge base.” ~From the foreword by Kalyanam Shivkumar, MD, PhD, FHRS, FRCP (Lond-Hon) Fact-based and clinically-focused, this new third edition of Essential Cardiac Electrophysiology: The Self-Assessment Approach is an ideal reference in a bullet-point format that provides a concise and essential overview of electrophysiology. Packed with ABIM-style 200 multiple-choice questions designed to aid readers' understanding of key concepts and retention of essential facts, it is an excellent study aid for electrophysiology fellows, cardiology fellows, and electrophysiologists preparing for board examination or other EP certifications. Comprehensively updated with the latest recommendations and findings, it includes multiple tables, electrophysiology tracings and illustrations, and a treasury of electrophysiology pearls. This expanded Third Edition includes new chapters on AV blocks, channelopathies, and ventricular arrhythmias in a structurally normal heart, along with enhanced coverage of: · Electrophysiologic aspects of AVNRT and AVRT · Long and short RP tachycardia · Parahisian pacing · Bystander activation of accessory pathways · Brugada syndrome · Long QT syndrome and pregnancy A note on the questions: All the questions are ABIM style. Some of the questions have a tangential approach, i.e., not only one has to know the correct diagnosis but also has to know the correct management approach. Some questions are "concept" questions; i.e., it is to evaluate a basic concept to verify understanding.

Book excerpt: Our purpose in writing this book was to produce a clinically-oriented, non-multi-au thored textbook ofcardiac electrophysiology that would be useful to practicing electro physiologists, cardiologists, fellows in training as well as associated electrophysiology professionals, including nurses and technologists. While all clinical textbooks risk be coming outdated even before they're published, and few textbooks ofa manageable size can claim to be completely comprehensive, our goal was to produce a book that system atically presents a thorough discussion ofthe fundamental principles and concepts im portant to the practice of clinical electrophysiology. We do not discuss basic cellular electrophysiology for its sake alone, but instead include basic science material only when itis helpful in explaining the overlying clinical principles. Cardiac electrophysiology, as with any subspecialty, behaves as a living organism with continuous evolution of its standards and practices. However, even though the details and tools of management (catheters, drugs, devices, etc. ) may change with dazzling speed, the fundamental princi ples ofdiagnosis and management generally change very little and they remain the criti cal underpinning ofthe day-to-day management ofpatients with cardiac arrhythmias. In the first third ofthe book we present the principles ofclinical cardiac electrophysiolo gy as it is currently practiced.

Book excerpt: Radiofrequency Catheter Ablation of Cardiac Arrhythmias has been so extensively updated for its third edition that the book now features a new title: Catheter Ablation of Cardiac Arrhythmias: Basic Concepts and Clinical Applications. The editors bring you 21 polished chapters, each updating the fundamentals and progressing to advanced concepts, providing state-of-the-art knowledge with highly relevant material for experienced electrophysiologists as well as fellows in training. This streamlined new edition features: • Two new editors, both widely published and leaders in the field of catheter ablation • 21 instead of 39 chapters, achieved by focusing on primary topics of broad interest and assimilating information from a wide range of sources • Fewer authors, chosen for their recognized contributions to the topics under discussion, providing a more integrated and coherent approach • Anatomic insights from leading pathologist Siew Yen Ho, integrated with new information from imaging technologies Each chapter dealing with ablation of a specific arrhythmia features the author's personal approach to ablation of the arrhythmia, including practical "how-to" tips, and a review of potential pitfalls. Alternate approaches and variations are succinctly summarized. Original figures and drawings illustrate specific approaches to improve the usability of the book.

Book excerpt: Now in an abridged second edition, Electrophysiological Foundations of Cardiac Arrhythmias focuses on teaching the fundamental concepts of cardiac cellular electrophysiology with an emphasis on the relationship of basic mechanisms to clinical cardiac arrhythmias. Understanding this relationship and the electrophysiological mechanisms underlying arrhythmogenesis will be invaluable to physicians entering the fields of cardiology and clinical electrophysiology, as well as those scientists and clinicians already working in these areas. These essential concepts of electrophysiology include discussion on action potentials, ion channels and currents, and mechanisms of arrhythmias, and provide the working knowledge that will enable the reader to approach a board exam confidently. Additionally, the authors build a base of understanding that will prepare the reader for more advanced texts, such as Josephson’s Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology: Techniques and Interpretations.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accurate diagnosis of arrhythmias is the goal of this volume. Before the clinician can accurately classify the multiple permutations of cardiac rhythm encountered in daily practice, several essential preconditions must be met. At the most basic level, the clinician must know the diagnostic criteria for each rhythm. Without a clear understanding of these criteria, an accurate differential diagnosis is impossible, and without accurate diagnosis, correct intervention is a mere matter of chance. A second precondition of accurate rhythm diagnosis is an understanding of the mechanism of arrhythmias. Not uncommonly, two or more arrhythmic mechanisms coexist, confronting the clinician with a baffling mixture of apparently unrelated complexes and intervals. Without an understanding of the various arrhythmic mechanisms, simple and complex, the tangled skein of data can never be unraveled. Finally accurate arrhythmia diagnosis depends on skill attained through practice. The competent electrocardiographer combines the skills of precise measurement and rational application of logic with broad theoretical knowledge. The pleasure of electrocardiography is seeing through the surface appearance to the inner workings. Interpretation of Cardiac Arrhythmias presupposes no prior knowledge of arrhythmias, and progresses from basic to the complex. The didactic sections focus extensively on the mechanism of arrhythmia, using laddergrams and other diagramatic devices to help the student visualize what is happening with the cardiac conduction system. Extensive self-assessment sections enable students to apply critical skills and test their grasp of the diagnostic criteria.
