Book excerpt: Carbon nanotubes (CNT) have shown very attractive mechanical properties, compared to current high-performance carbon fiber reinforcements. Recently, continuous CNT yarns (CNTy) have become commercially available and are becoming a promising choice as a reinforcement for composite applications. However, a fiber or yarn is only one piece of a puzzle that must work together in composite materials which is comprised of three key components - reinforcement, matrix, and the interface the reinforcement and matrix share. As such, CNTy materials must be proven to be effective not only as an individual constituent but its relationships with the matrix must be well characterized and understood. In this study, commercially available continuous CNTy and two modified versions with different their morphologies and mechanical performance were characterized. Results indicate that the neat CNTy variants could achieve specific strength of ~ 0.9 N tex-1. When the mechanical results were fit to statistical distributions, 2-parameter Weibull distribution can fit with a nearly 99% goodness-of-it. This indicates that a noticeable brittle failure mechanism to blame the large defects or voids existed in the CNTy materials. With the efforts to improve CNT packing and reduce large voids through high pressure compaction, we observed the specific tensile strength degradation from 0.838 to 0.337 N tex-1 suggesting that degree of alignment was the governing factor for mechanical integrity. Upon addressing the reinforcement properties, the interface was investigated. The commercially available continuous CNTy was modified using heat treatments and acid functionalization. The two treated CNTy and untreated CNTy were analyzed using dynamic contact angle tensiometry and Raman spectroscopy analysis. Two aerospace-grade resin systems were tested alongside to determine their surface tension polar and dispersive components. Together this information provides guidance for how to select CNTy/resin compatibility to maximize composite strength. Lastly, unlike carbon fiber, CNTy do not have a monolithic microstructure, so introducing resin between the CNTy bundles within the yarns aims maximize in-situ interaction subsequently improving mechanical performance. To investigate this effect, CNTy yarn microcomposites were fabricated, and a mechanical study like that of the neat CNTy was conducted. The results show that the combination of SCY/977-3 resin achieve the best mechanical properties over all tested combinations. These results conjointly agree with both the initial neat CNTy mechanical results and the CNTy/resin interface work. Jointly, this work provides a fundamental study of the CNTy materials and reveals great promise that CNTy potentially for reinforcement applications.

Book excerpt: Composites, especially carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites, are a popular material choice for aerospace structures because of their light weight combined with high strength and stiffness. One such application is carbon/epoxy rotorcraft blades. However, higher damping is needed in these composite blades for next-generation rotorcraft with increased speed capability. Research suggests that adding carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to the matrix of a carbon/epoxy composite can increase the damping properties without sacrificing the other desirable properties of the material. However, adding CNTs to composites poses many challenges, as dispersing loose CNTs evenly throughout epoxy is very difficult. As a result, research has been conducted into embedding different condensed forms of CNTs into composites. One of these material forms is CNT yarns. While some studies have been conducted on composites with embedded CNT yarns, less research exists on the properties of CNT yarns alone. In this investigation, the quasi-static and dynamic mechanical properties of Miralon® CNT yarns with and without an infiltrated epoxy binder, such as elastic modulus (E), ultimate tensile strength, strain to failure, storage modulus (E'), loss modulus (E"), and loss factor (tan [delta]), were explored through tensile tests, compression tests, and dynamic mechanical analysis. The mass density of dry CNT yarn was determined by two different methods, leading to two different measures of yarn cross-sectional area. These two measured yarn areas were subsequently used for determining tensile stress and volume fraction of CNTs in epoxy-impregnated specimens. From quasi-static tensile tests using an area derived from ethanol immersion testing, dry yarn was observed to have an elastic modulus of 149 GPa and an ultimate tensile strength of 1.25 GPa, while impregnated yarn had a modulus of roughly 55 GPa and a strength of 0.75 GPa. Impregnated yarn tensile properties did not vary appreciably with two investigated matrix moduli. Dry and impregnated yarns exhibited a ratcheting mechanism, where permanent strain is accumulated with repeated load cycling. In compression testing, impregnated yarns did not exhibit visually or electrically detectable failure up to about 2.5% strain, although more investigation is needed to determine actual failure strain. Through dynamic mechanical analysis, it was shown that both dry and impregnated yarns exhibited high damping, with average initial tan [delta] values of 0.110 and 0.0953, respectively. With continued cycling and increased strain, the storage modulus of resin-saturated yarns increased by 336%, while loss factor decreased by 36%. As a result, dry and impregnated yarns exhibited quasi-static and dynamic properties that were highly sensitive to loading history. Finally, various micromechanical methods were used to model impregnated yarn modulus. Assuming perfect bond and infinite CNT length, using a simple rule of mixtures gave an overestimation, although when voids were accounted for the result was within 2.4% of the experimental modulus. Short-fiber models predicted CNT aspect ratios far smaller than expected, suggesting that the model assumptions of perfect bond and/or alignment may not be appropriate.

This chapter presents a general introduction to aligned and high-volume fraction CNT composites and then explores two recent promising approaches for fabricating strong, stiff and multifunctional aligned CNT/polymer composite prepregs at satisfactory processing rates. One approach involves incorporating drawable superaligned CNT sheets into high-volume fraction composites through spraying or spray-stretching and winding. The other approach is based on directly shear pressing vertically aligned CNT arrays into horizontally aligned sheets with subsequent polymer infiltration. Both approaches produced CNT composite prepregs with desirable structural features and excellent properties. Aligned CNT/bismaleimide composites produced by stretch winding exhibited a combined tensile strength and elastic modulus exceeding carbon fiber composites. The exceptional mechanical performance coupled with unique electrical and thermal properties makes these materials promising for a wide range of applications, such as multifunctional composite structures, lightweight and flexible conductors, thermal interface materials, and sensors.

They exhibit outstanding mechanical, electrical and thermal properties. The coupling between their electrical resistance and temperature (thermoresistivity) and mechanical strain (piezoresistivity) results in an interest for their use in sensing applications. This two-fold study aims to investigate first the thermoresistive response of CNTY/polymer monofilament composites (single CNTY embedded in the polymer) towards the development of in-situ sensors. The second aim is to determine the electrical response of the CNTY/polymer monofilament composites under dynamic loading to determine the working bandwidth and sensitivity of the yarn. Thermoresistive characterization was done to monitor the curing kinetics inside polymeric matrices. This was done by integrating a single CNTY into polymeric matrices with different properties in order to investigate the effect of polymerization kinetics such as resin infiltration, degree of crosslinking, chemical shrinkage, and residual thermal stresses on the electrical response of the embedded yarn. The crosslinked CNTY monofilament composites were subjected to cyclic and incremental-dwell temperature programs and their thermoresistive response was systematically studied. A reference strain gauge was used to calibrate the response of the CNTY and obtain the sensitivity of the CNTY monofilament composite over a range of frequencies and amplitudes. A frequency response function (FRF) was determined between the fractional change in resistance and base acceleration to analyze the bandwidth of the CNTY monofilament composites. Another FRF was simultaneously measured between the output strain and base acceleration in order to obtain the dynamic piezoresistive sensitivity, which is defined as the fractional change in resistance versus strain. The knowledge unveiled in this study will provide the fundamentals to develop integrated thermistors and sensors that could monitor dynamic signals.
