Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A radically new perspective on human vision is emerging. Groundbreaking research by evolutionary scientist and neurobiologist Mark Changizi is driving a revolution in our understanding of human vision. In asking why we see the way we do, Changizi overturns existing beliefs and provides new answers to age-old questions. Why do our eyes face forward? While binocular vision was helpful to our primate ancestors, its importance for 3-D vision is exaggerated. Squirrels jump from branch to branch just fine with sideways-facing eyes and many athletes, including Hockey Hall of Famer Frank McGee, play with only one eye. HINT: We evolved in a highly leafy environment. Why do we see in color, when most other mammals do not? Its not because it helped our ancestors find ripe fruit. Our color vision has evolved to be extremely sensitive to specific sets of color changes. HINT: Primates with color vision, like us, are the only ones who have areas of bare skin. Why do we see optical illusions? Its not the result of glitches in our visual system. Optical illusions can be traced back to the same specific property of vision. HINT: We are able to catch a ball coming at us much more effectively than we should given the speed at which our brains process visual input. Why do we absorb information so readily by reading? Its not because weve evolved to read; evolutionarily, reading and writing are recent developments. HINT: Language is designed to exploit skills weve refined over tens of millions of years. In The Vision Revolution, Changizi details the conclusions of his innovative fieldwork and their mind-blowing implications for our understanding not just of human vision, but of the way we interact with the world in which we live.

It highlights research aimed at understanding human interaction with products, services and systems, and focuses on finding effective approaches for improving user experience. It also discusses key issues in designing and providing assistive devices and services to individuals with disabilities or impairment, to assist mobility, communication, positioning, environmental control and daily living. The book covers modelling as well as innovative design concepts, with a special emphasis on user-centered design, and design for specific populations, particularly the elderly. Virtual reality, digital environments, heuristic evaluation and forms of device interface feedback of (e.g. visual and haptic) are also among the topics covered. Based on the both the AHFE 2019 Conference on Usability & User Experience and the AHFE 2019 Conference on Human Factors and Assistive Technology, held on July 24-28, 2019, Washington D.C., USA, this book reports on cutting-edge findings, research methods and user-centred evaluation approaches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume entitled "TRANSAERO - A European Initiative on Transient Aerodynamics for Railway System Optimisation" contains the results of the contributors during the project th symposium which took place in Paris, France, on 4th and 5 May 1999 hosted by the International Union of Railways, UIC. This symposium was organised within the framework of the BRITE/EURAM project "TRANSAERO" under contract BRPR-CT9S-0067. The project has been co-financed by the European Union within the Fourth Research Framework Programme. More than 100 participants followed the invitation to the symposium. This great response shows the continuing interest in a relevant topic of railway technology and offered us the opportunity to present the recent results of intense European collaboration to the international community of railway aerodynamic experts. In the last few decades, mobility in Europe, based on automobiles for individual traffic and lorries for freight traffic, has grown more and more; yearly growth rates of more than 10% have often been reported by statistics. Even with a fully developed construction programme for motorways and similar high-performance roads, these growth rates cumulated over the years cannot easily be handled in an environment-friendly way. The European Commission has therefore given distinct political signals to get more passengers onto the railways. This policy represents a clear challenge for the next few decades for European railway companies: the considerable increase in mobility in a Europe with falling borders will cause a doubling of the traffic volume within the next 10 to 20 years.
