Book Synopsis Writings by Pre-Revolutionary French Women by : Colette H. Winn
Download or read book Writings by Pre-Revolutionary French Women written by Colette H. Winn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume covers 30 Pre-Revolutionary French women, providing a representative sampling of their manifold and varied contributions to intellectual and cultural history. This volume is unique in its grouping of essentially French writers from the Pre-Revolutionary period. The authors included here range from those prominent because of their social position or literary fame, to those slowly becoming part of a new canon of Old Regime women writers - authors whose works were known to their contemporaries but who have slipped into near invisibility in the following centuries until their recent rediscovery and reassessment.
Book Synopsis The Je-Ne-Sais-Quoi in Early Modern Europe by : Richard Scholar
Download or read book The Je-Ne-Sais-Quoi in Early Modern Europe written by Richard Scholar and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2005-09-29 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the je-ne-sais-quoi? How-if at all-can it be put into words? In addressing these questions, Richard Scholar offers the first full-length study of the je-ne-sais-quoi and its fortunes in early modern Europe. He describes the rise and fall of the expression as a noun and as a topic of debate, examines its cluster of meanings, and uncovers the scattered traces of its 'pre-history'. The je-ne-sais-quoi is often assumed to belong purely to the realm of the literary, but in the early modern period it serves to articulate problems of knowledge in natural philosophy, the passions, and culture, and for that reason it is approached here from an interdisciplinary perspective. Placing major figures of the period such as Montaigne, Shakespeare, Descartes, Corneille, and Pascal alongside some of their lesser-known contemporaries, Scholar argues that the je-ne-sais-quoi serves above all to capture first-person encounters with a 'certain something' that is as difficult to explain as its effects are intense. When early modern writers use the expression in this way, he suggests, they give literary form to an experience that twenty-first-century readers may recognize as something like their own.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Goldstein shows how the connection between Vaux and Versailles is at the heart of classical style. She retraces the roots of Versailles in Fouquet's short-lived experiment, and destabilises any easy understanding of the court of the Sun King as the origin of French national style.
Book Synopsis The Molière Encyclopedia by : James F. Gaines
Download or read book The Molière Encyclopedia written by James F. Gaines and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-11-30 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born Jean-Baptiste Poquelin in 1622, the French playwright Moli^D`ere became one of the most influential dramatists of the 17th century. His comedies shaped the development of theater in Europe, inspired his contemporaries in England, and left a lasting dramatic legacy after his death in 1673. Moli^D`re has also inspired a vast body of scholarship, and recent work has dispelled many of the myths surrounding his career. This reference provides English-speaking readers with a current and comprehensive guide to his life and works. Hundreds of A-Z entries cover topics related to his life, works, and theatrical career, including: Plays; Individual characters; Historical persons; Allusions; Influences; Cultural institutions; And much more. This scrupulously researched volume relies on verifiable facts, giving scant attention to the romantic fiction surrounding the playwright. Many of the entries list works for further reading. A chronology outlines the chief events of Moli^D`re's life and his contributions to the stage. The volume concludes with a bibliography.

Book excerpt: La Fontaine's Contes et nouvelles en vers was probably the most famous illustrated book to have appeared in France during the eighteenth century. The celebrated 1762 edition, published by Louis XV's detested tax-gatherers, the Compagnie des Fermiers généraux, held among its claims to supremacy its magnificent copperplate illustrations, designed by Charles Eisen. In this highly illustrated book, David Adams first sets out a publishing history of the edition, using historical, bibliographical and cultural evidence, and next provides a detailed study of the plates as a whole. In so doing, he gives his interpretation of the values and attitudes of the Compagnie, the members of which took great care to ensure that the plates reflected their view of contemporary society. Finally, he gives a synoptic view of the illustrations, and situates the work in the wider context of contemporary French illustrated books. This pioneering study of the relationship between text and image in eighteenth-century France shows that the illustrations the Fermiers généraux commissioned for this literary classic were intended to promote their own patrician values, and to assert their freedom of action, turning literature into propaganda with consequences they did not foresee.

Book excerpt: This is a rich collection of essays on French comic drama of the period from the renewal of comic drama in the 1640s to the eve of the French Revolution. The book offers exciting new studies of individual works and authors, while giving full consideration to broader issues. Major authors (such as Molière, Marivaux and Beaumarchais) are treated alongside authors who, while famous in their day and instrumental in the development of the genre, have lesser reputations today. The collection reveals the continuities, variations and new departures in the diverse comic traditions of the period in the different Paris theatres, including both the officially recognised Comédie-Française and Comédie-Italienne and the independent commercial Fair companies.
