However, the evidential value of a print is strongly dependent on the knowledge of its age (the time which has passed since deposition). Suspects might admit their previous presence at a crime scene, but often claim to have been there prior to or after the crime. Especially in regard to public or highly-frequented crime scenes, prints might lose their evidential value in this case, potentially leading to dropped charges. Despite its high relevance, the challenge of estimating a latent print's age could not be adequately addressed for 80 years. In this thesis, non-invasive high-resolution capturing devices are for the first time applied to the age estimation challenge, replacing classical physical or chemical print development techniques. They allow to capture a single print in regular time intervals and to systematically study its degradation behavior. Introducing automated processing methods in the form of a digital pipeline including preprocessing, feature extraction and age estimation techniques, objective age estimates are presented for the first time in this field. Maximum classification performances of different capturing devices between 76% and 86% are achieved for two-class problems. Furthermore, a qualitative influence model on the aging speed of latent prints is designed, forming a prerequisite for future studies.

While property ownership is a cornerstone of the American dream, the status of enslaved people supplies a contrasting American nightmare. Sarah Gilbreath Ford considers how writers in works from nineteenth-century slave narratives to twenty-first-century poetry employ gothic tools, such as ghosts and haunted houses, to portray the horrors of this nightmare. Haunted Property: Slavery and the Gothic thus reimagines the southern gothic, which has too often been simply equated with the macabre or grotesque and then dismissed as regional. Although literary critics have argued that the American gothic is driven by the nation’s history of racial injustice, what is missing in this critical conversation is the key role of property. Ford argues that out of all of slavery’s perils, the definition of people as property is the central impetus for haunting because it allows the perpetration of all other terrors. Property becomes the engine for the white accumulation of wealth and power fueled by the destruction of black personhood. Specters often linger, however, to claim title, and Ford argues that haunting can be a bid for property ownership. Through examining works by Harriet Jacobs, Hannah Crafts, Mark Twain, Herman Melville, Sherley Anne Williams, William Faulkner, Eudora Welty, Toni Morrison, Octavia Butler, and Natasha Trethewey, Ford reveals how writers can use the gothic to combat legal possession with spectral possession.

Dominic Pettman says it can--although not before carefully redefining technology as a cultural challenge to what we mean by the "human" in the information age. These data can be very diverse: sounds, emotions, shapes, motions, forces, muscles, actions, etc. Once captured, they have to be treated either to make the invisible visible, or to understand a particular phenomenon so as to formulate an appropriate reaction, or to integrate various information in a new multimedia format. The conference included six sessions of presented papers and three panel discussions. Invited speakers treating various aspects of the topic were: Professor R. Earnshaw from Bradford University, Professor T. L. Kunii from Hosei University, and Professor P. Robert from EPFL. Professor K. Bauknecht, of the University of Zürich, President of IFIP, offered the welcoming address. Mr. E. Badique, project officer for the EU in Brussels, discussed recent results of the EU ACTS research program. Finally, the Geneva Computer Animation '98 Film Festival highlighted the evening of November 26.
