L'archéologie, notamment, permet-elle d'apporter des réponses à ces questions, grâce aux recherches dont on fait récemment l'objet un certain nombre de ces capitales désaffectées, éphémères ? Et même, est-il possible de répondre réellement à cette question originelle sur les causes du phénomènes ? Les réponses semblent en tout cas multiples... Il nous est donc apparu intéressant de réunir, à l'occasion d'un colloque tenu à Tours en mars 2003, les chercheurs, historiens et archéologues, concernés par cette question, pour s'interroger sur les explications que l'on peut proposer à ce constat : celui de l'échec relatif de certaines capitales de cités choisies comme telle au début de l'Empire qui, comme villes et en tout cas comme lieux de pouvoir, n'ont pas pu survivre aux mutations culturelles et aux soubresauts qu'ont connu les Gaules à partir du 3e siècle. L'interrogation a été examinée à travers des synthèses régionales, mais aussi un certain nombre d'études de as sur l'un ou l'autre de ces sites spécifiques : le présent volume concerne les 20 communications constituant les Actes de ce colloque ; elles sont suivies d'un Atlas quasi exhaustif de quelque 40 notices portant sur les chefs-lieux concernés des Gaules, sous une forme courte et dans une présentation homogène.

Book excerpt: This book describes and analyses the development of the Roman West from Gibraltar to the Rhine, using primarily the extensive body of published archaeological evidence rather than the textual evidence underlying most other studies. It situates this development within a longer-term process of change, proposing the later second century rather than the 'third-century crisis' as the major turning-point, although the latter had longer-term consequences owing to the rise in importance of military identities. Elsewhere, more 'traditional' forms of settlement and display were sustained, to which was added the vocabulary of Christianity. The longer-term rhythms are also central to assessing the evidence for such aspects as rural settlement and patterns of economic interaction. The collapse of Roman imperial authority emphasised trends such as militarisation and regionalisation along with economic and cultural disintegration. Indicators of 'barbarian/Germanic' presence are reassessed within such contexts and the traditional interpretations questioned and alternatives proposed.

Book excerpt: The traditional picture is that there is little information about Tongeren, the capital of the civitas Tungrorum in Roman times, from Late Antiquity onwards. In the last twenty years or so, very cautiously, voices have been raised to nuance the story of the general decline of Tongeren from the beginning of the fifth century. A recurring question is whether Tongeren remained inhabited and what its function might have been. A key site is the Roman basilica, the predecessor of an early medieval church. A key figure is the bishop, whose seat was moved to neighbouring Maastricht in the sixth century. Based on an extensive database, a picture of late Roman Tongeren is drawn, with its public and private buildings, cemeteries and material finds. While the number of finds is decreasing, more historical sources are becoming available for the early Middle Ages. For this period, not only the re-Christianisation is discussed, but also the political, religious and economic role that the former capital of the civitas could have played. Due to its location, one could state that in the civitas Tungrorum the Middle Ages started earlier than elsewhere because of the emergence of a Franko-Roman society.
