Book excerpt: A packet radio network is a collection of geographically distributed packet radio units communicating over a shared broadcast channel. Usually not all radio units are within hearing range of each other, and thus multihop operation is required. These networks represent the natural extension of point-to-point packet-switched data networks when mobile operation is desired. An important difference exists, however, with respect to the latter: due to the multiaccess nature of the radio channel, the success of a packet at a destination depends on the activity, during the transmission of the packet, of the neighbors of the destination, and on system parameters such as the type of signaling and received power levels. The conditions under which a packet is successfully received in the presence of interfering packets are designated as the capture mode. Due to the existence of multiuser interference, some form of coordination among the users is required when accessing the channel. This purpose is accomplished by the channel access protocol. (RRH).

Book excerpt: This is a book about the bricks and mortar from which are built those edifices that will permeate the emerging information society of the future-computer networks. For many years such computer networks have played an indirect role in our daily lives as the hidden servants of banks, airlines, and stores. Now they are becoming more visible as they enter our offices and homes and directly become part of our work, entertainment, and daily living. The study of how computer networks function is a combined study of communication theory and computer science, two disciplines appearing to have very little in common. The modern communication scientist wishing to work in this area soon finds that solving the traditional problems of transmission, modulation, noise immunity, and error bounds in getting the signal from one point to another is just the beginning of the challenge. The communication must be in the right form to be routed properly, to be handled without congestion, and to be understood at various points in the network. As for the computer scientist, he finds that his discipline has also changed. The fraction of computers that belong to networks is increasing all the time. And for a typical single computer, the fraction of its execution load, storage occupancy, and system management problems that are in volved with being part of a network is also growing.

Book excerpt: Consider multihop packet radio networks operating under a general class of channel access protocols. For the purpose of throughput analysis, analytical models are considered which describe the joint activity of the transmitters in the network, under the assumptions of heavy traffic and zero propagation and processing delays. The problem addressed in this report is that of finding conditions for the existence of product form solutions for the steady-state probabilities of these models. The main result states that a necessary and sufficient conditions for a given network topology, channel access protocol, and traffic pattern, to lead to a product form solution is that the blocking between each pair of used links, as specified by the access protocol, by symmetric. This result assumes Poisson scheduling point processes associated with the links of the network. The proof is given in two steps: first, for systems where all packet length distributions are exponential, giving rise to Markovian processes; and second, for general packet length distributions (subject to the restriction of possessing a positive density almost everywhere), giving rise to Generalized Semi-Markov Processes. It is also shown that a product form solution does not exist whenever any of the scheduling point process in the network is not Poisson. In addition, it is proven that the computation of the normalization factor appearing in the expression of the product form solution is an NP-hard problem. (rh).

Book excerpt: This book, the first presentation and survey of its kind, aims to provide simple, practical insights by which both researchers and practitioners may benefit in enabling them to recognize when closed form expressions can be expected for steady state probabilities. In particular, it shows how these same insights can be used to develop simple bounds for systems that are non-solvable when practical features are taken into account.

An architecture for such a network dictates the selection of channels for packet transmission. We propose and analyze two multichannel architectures. In the first, each node employs a single radio and is assigned a channel on which it listens when it does not transmit. To transmit a packet, the node tunes its radio to the channel of the intended receiver for that transmission only. The second architecture requires each radio to use a single channel for both transmission and reception, but provides some of the nodes with more than one radio each, allowing them to serve as bridges between channels. Within these architectures one can further select the amount of routing information held by each node and the channel-access protocol, both of which greatly affect the network performance. To ascertain the effect of the various parameters, we calculate the throughput and average packet progress in both architectures. The channel access protocols we consider are slotted ALOHA and CSMA with and without capture. We also evaluate the effect of increasing the amount of routing information held be the nodes.

Book excerpt: In this report, the performance of various channel access schemes in multi-hop packet radio networks with a regular structure is studied by means of simulation. The channel access schemes considered are: ALOHA (pure and slotted), Carrier Sense Multiple Access (CSMA), Busy Tone Multiple Access (BTMA), Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), and a new hypothetical scheme introduced here for comparison purposes referred to as Coded Activity Signalling Multiple Access (CASMA. Network throughput and packet delay are evaluated, as well as the effects on performance of the nodal transmission scheduling rate, the propagation delay among nodes, and to some extent the input flow control. In this study, we consider networks in which both the topology and the traffic pattern are symmetric. This renders all nodes in the network statistically identical, and thus helps reduce the complexity of the simulation task considerably without jeopardizing the objective. The performance of CSMA in such networks is shown to be rather poor as compared with its performance in fully connected networks, while relatively high performance is achieved by the CASMA scheme, as compared with CSMA and the ALOHA schemes. (RH).
