Take half of eight; twice two, or four times one, And see how different halves in form may run, When equal area's not of equal length, While equal size may have unequal strength; A whole mob's wisdom often will not reach To half of what one learned sage can teach; When two take halves in sharing wisdom, it Not follows they take equal shares of wit; And, two wits being equal, oft we find Their gifts unequal; so wills Fortune blind; And then, again - stop, lest my brain, o'erwrought, Should find its travelled farther than it ought. Thus thought I, as, in fancy, once I went Along that pleasant road in fertile Kent That's known as Watling Street. I rode a horse That lightly carried me along the course; Though you'll say I did ne'er on horseback act; But this is fancy; don't forget that fact. My head, with gloomy lumbering thought opprest, So heavy grew, it drooped upon my breast; It had, with heavier thought, dropped at my feet, And thought no more; 'tis thus extremes do meet. When, on a sudden, a sharp clattering sound Of hoofs disturbed my thought, and, looking round, I saw, swift coming onward, and with force, A heavier man than I, a heavier horse About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories Form Chaucer: The Canterbury Tales Geoffrey Chaucer was an English poet who lived in the fourteenth century. For nearly five hundred years he has ministered to the mirth and gladness of the English-speaking world. In the Canterbury Tales the fourteenth century rises from the grave, so to speak; and Chaucer's pilgrims - a motley band - are almost the only men of his time who live and breathe immortalized by the genius of the poet. Never again, we fear, will Merrie England see the friendly social gathering of knight and squire, of stately dame and low-born cook, of merchant, miller, and friar, spending the evening together in listening to such tales as these. Some of them, no doubt, were coarse enough to make one wonder how they could be told in the hearing of ladies and of priests. Chaucer's Tales may be regarded as the first and most popular of the short stories that have won for themselves so prominent a place in literature. His Canterbury Tales are the first miscellany of poetry and fiction in our tongue that has achieved world-wide popularity. Their age in itself is no small addition to their charm. These stories, which are now being scattered broadcast over the English-speaking world, were familiar to the men who fought the Wars of the Roses. They cheered the youth of the Reformers, they were the favorite reading of the heroes of the Elizabethan age; and down to our own time these short stories in verse have been the solace and the amusement of successive generations of our race. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Originals and Analogues of Some of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales Mr. Clouston has also been good enough to revise Mr. Lv. M. Wood's Index to this volume, and to draw up the Contents, adding a List of the Tales illustrated by analogs, variants, &c. This was necessary, because the latter were printed as they came to hand. I never thought of waiting to get everything available for any Tale before anything about it was put forth. I still hope to arrange with Mr. Hy. Ward and some second Editor for the issue of the original of the Knight's Tale. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales: The Prologue The lines on which this edition of Chaucer's Prologue to the Canterbury Tales is compiled have been determined by a happy conjunction of my own inclination and an external cause. After it had been begun, Dr. Liddell, one of my collaborators in the 'Globe' Chaucer, edited also for Messrs. Macmillan, though primarily for the Macmillan Company of New York, an edition of the Prologue and the Tales of the Knight and the Nun's Priest. When his book was announced, a dislike of even seeming to compete with a friend who had given me such valuable help in a previous undertaking made me wish to abandon my own task. But on studying Dr. Liddell's edition I found that there was no possibility of any work of mine coming into collision with it, and that its existence made my own task easier. While Dr. Liddell has given a useful minimum of illustrative notes, he has put his main strength into an exposition of Chaucer's practice as regards phonology, grammar, and syntax, which seems to me by far the ablest dissertation on the subject yet published. To this, therefore, I can now happily refer all students who desire advanced instruction in the linguistic aspect of Chaucer's poetry. My own interest in Chaucer is not linguistic, but literary and historical. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales: For the Modern Reader Was never eye did see that face, Was never ear did hear that tongue, Was never mind did mind his grace, That ever thought the travail long; But eyes and ears and every thought Were with his sweet perfections caught. (From Lowell's Essay.) This preface and this book are not meant for the scholar who reads his Middle English with ease, nor again for the student who wishes to delve into the grammar and the syntax of fourteenth-century English. Rather are they meant for those many people who have not read, who say they cannot read, Chaucer. For, let writers deny it as they will, to the modern Englishman, and still more to the modern Englishwoman, Chaucer is a sealed book. A few lines here and there are clear enough - but then the reader is pulled up sharp and has to refer to notes and glossary; and the man who sets out for enjoyment, will not for long turn aside to notes and glossary, however well they may be supplied. If it were not so, if this contention were not true, Professor Skeat would not have thought it necessary to publish a modern version of the beautiful Knightes Tale. The understanding of Chaucer and the love of him (the two go together) are not very old. Neither Addison nor Pope could appreciate him, and it is well known into what Dryden turned the tales. But attempts have been made to bring Chaucer nearer to the people. Charles Cowden Clarke "purified" him; others modernised his spelling; others again so altered him in modernising him that the poet was unrecognisable. Not one of these versions has succeeded. It is a bold thing to hope to prosper where so many have failed; but the present editor is bound to explain - and to defend - his method. To begin with, certain tales, seven out of the twenty-four, have been left untouched. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The most complete of all remaining surviving fragments sections of The Canterbury Tales, the First Fragment contains some of Chaucer's most widely enjoyed work. In The General Prologue, Chaucer introduces his pilgrims through a set of speaking portraits, drawn with a clarity that makes no attempt to conceal their peculiarities. The four tales that follow - those of the Knight, Miller, Reeve and Cook - reveal a wide variety of human preoccupations: whether chivalrous, romantic or simply sexual. Brilliantly bawdy and subtly complex, each of these tales is alive with Chaucer's skills as a poet, storyteller and creator of comedy.
