Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sunday Times' Music Book of the Year 2017 Allan Jones launched Uncut magazine in 1997 and for 15 years wrote a popular monthly column called Stop Me If You've Heard This One Before, based on his experiences as a music journalist in the 70s and 80s, a gilded time for the music press. By turns hilarious, cautionary, poignant and powerful, the Stop Me... stories collected here include encounters with some of rock's most iconic stars, including David Bowie, Lou Reed, Leonard Cohen, Van Morrison, Neil Young, Elvis Costello, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Smiths, R.E.M. and Pearl Jam. From backstage brawls and drug blow-outs, to riots, superstar punch-ups, hotel room confessionals and tour bus lunacy, these are stories from the madness of a music scene now long gone.

Book Synopsis Fall Down 7 Times Get Up 8 by : Naoki Higashida
Download or read book Fall Down 7 Times Get Up 8 written by Naoki Higashida and published by Knopf Canada. This book was released on 2017-07-11 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A story never before told and a memoir to help change our understanding of the world around us, 13-year-old Naoki Higashida's astonishing, empathetic book takes us into the mind of a boy with severe autism. With an introduction by David Mitchell, author of the global phenomenon, Cloud Atlas, and translated by his wife, KA Yoshida. Naoki Higashida was only a middle-schooler when he began to write The Reason I Jump. Autistic and with very low verbal fluency, Naoki used an alphabet grid to painstakingly spell out his answers to the questions he imagines others most often wonder about him: why do you talk so loud? Is it true you hate being touched? Would you like to be normal? The result is an inspiring, attitude-transforming book that will be embraced by anyone interested in understanding their fellow human beings, and by parents, caregivers, teachers, and friends of autistic children. Naoki examines issues as diverse and complex as self-harm, perceptions of time and beauty, and the challenges of communication, and in doing so, discredits the popular belief that autistic people are anti-social loners who lack empathy. This book is mesmerizing proof that inside an autistic body is a mind as subtle, curious, and caring as anyone else's.
Book Synopsis The Words and Music of Elvis Costello by : James E. Perone
Download or read book The Words and Music of Elvis Costello written by James E. Perone and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-05-26 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides in-depth analysis of the words, music, and recordings of Elvis Costello, one of the most enigmatic, eclectic, and critically acclaimed singer-songwriters of the rock era. Elvis Costello is one of the greatest pop songwriters of his generation as well as one of the most significant songwriters of the 20th century. His career's length now approaching four decades, Costello continues to be vital part of pop culture through live performances, recordings, and the iconic nature of his work. The Words and Music of Elvis Costello provides in-depth analysis of this important artist's words, music, and recordings. Arranged chronologically, the book places Costello in the cultural context of his time and place; addresses the overlaps between rock, classical, torch song, and jazz in Costello's highly eclectic range of songs from 1975 to the present; provides a look at the uniquely British aspects of his work; and uniquely spotlights his compositional techniques and approaches to musical form. The book covers everything from Costello's first album My Aim Is True as well as his other albums in the 1970s to his body of work in the '80s and '90s to his continuing eclecticism in the 21st century as he successfully integrates what would appear to be mutually exclusive genres. The concluding chapter provides analysis of the critical commentary about Elvis Costello's work as a performer and songwriter over his long career.

Download or read book The Mud Folio written by David Greenberg and published by [product]. This book was released on 2011-09-05 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DAVID GREENBERG has directed Grammy-nominated music videos, scripted the platinum selling KISS EXPOSED for Paul & Gene, product managed Yoko, Ringo, Devo and more. He's now a Marketing Director for jazz's crème de la crème. Still the bulk of his lyrics lay unsung; deadbeats who should be out making the big bucks, or more importantly, changing millions of lives the world over. These days he'd be grateful for pennies on the dollar and a few listeners given a good chuckle. Only three lyricals have music. Why? As Cary Baker, of conqueroo noted, "David never found his Elton John to his Bernie Taupin." That's not to puff up the quality of the collection to the size of an alarmed blowfish, insinuating Greenberg is a Bernie Taupin, a Hal David, a Captain Beefheart--but even they weren't icons when they first started. BTW, which three lyrics? Buy the MUD FOLIO and find out. Get your copy today and start the rest of your music career on a straight path to hitdom. Or at least jump start Greenberg's.

Book Synopsis Zainichi Koreans and Mental Health by : Taeyoung Kim
Download or read book Zainichi Koreans and Mental Health written by Taeyoung Kim and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-10-27 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a qualitative, interview-based approach, Kim investigates how conflicting identities and social marginalization affect the mental health of members of the ethnic Korean minority living in Japan. So-called “Zainichi” Koreans living in Japan have a higher suicide rate than native Japanese, or than any other ethnic group within Japan, a country which has one of the highest suicide rates in the world. Considering themselves neither truly Korean nor wholly Japanese, they are mainly descendants of immigrants who came to Japan during the colonial period in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Kim explores the challenges facing these individuals, including the dilemmas of ethnic education, the discrimination against them by mainstream society, and the consequent impacts on their mental health. An insightful read both for scholars of Japanese culture and society and for anthropologists and sociologists with an interest in the effects of marginalization on ethnic minority citizens more broadly.
