Book excerpt: Canine distemper is a highly contagious viral disease that affects a variety of household animals except cats. The disease can appear concurrently with toxoplasmosis, neosporosis, coccidiosis, parasitoses, and various viral and bacterial infections – which can make the disease difficult to diagnose. The mortality rate of the virus largely depends on the immune status of infected animals. Puppies have the highest mortality rate, where pneumonia and encephalitis are a lot more common. This book outlines tests and treatment options for the virus, along with information on how to obtain cheaper treatment for your pet.

Book excerpt: In the early 1970s in the desert community of Lancaster, California, Dr. Alson Sears had been overwhelmed with cases of canine distemper, resulting in "boxes and boxes" of dead dogs despite trying every treatment he could find. Then a paper about using Newcastle's Disease Vaccine to induce interferon in cats gave him a flash of insight. Dr. Sears made an attempt to create interferon in dogs, but it did not work out the way he planned. A laboratory test concluded the resulting sample did not include interferon, but by then Dr. Sears had already saved a distemper dog with his NDV serum. After treating and saving more distemper dogs, he realized he had created an unknown material with lifesaving properties. But Dr. Sears lacked the training and connections to properly document his treatment, and the experts only dismissed his discovery as "impossible." So, he quietly treated hundreds of dogs over the next few decades, drawing little attention to himself. But then in 1997, he treated and saved a dog that belonged to Ed Bond, a freelance L.A. Times reporter at the time, who eventually would draw the story out of Dr. Sears. After posting a website about the treatment in 2000, Ed Bond kept hearing from people whose dogs were being saved. When a vet in Romania followed Dr. Sears' protocols on the edbond.com website and saved at least 5 dogs with it, the light bulb went on for Ed. In December 2008, Ed launched a campaign to Save Dogs From Distemper that circled the globe and involved hundreds of dog owners and rescuers, as well as dozens of veterinarians and professionals. This is a story of hope for owners of distemper dogs that explains what Ed has learned about canine distemper and why many more distemper dogs can be saved.

Book excerpt: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an enigmatic immune mediated disease of the central nervous system that affects about 350,000 individuals in the US, and many more around the world. The mechanism of this disease is largely unknown and there is no cure for it. However, there are several well-characterized experimental animal models that help us understand and speculate about potential mechanisms of pathology in this disease. Many of the experimental therapies designed for this disease rely on testing the drugs in animal models before using it in clinical trials. This book combines for the first time the different experimental models for MS (including immune-mediated and viral) under one roof, and highlights aspects that are different or shared among these experimental models. It’s aim is to improve our understanding of this devastating disease and help us think about potential additional therapies for it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Veterinary Neurology provides quick access to vital information on neurologic conditions in a wide range of species, including canine, feline, bovine, caprine, equine, ovine, and porcine. A problem-oriented approach makes it easy to diagnose and treat neurologic problems in small and large animals. The coverage of disorders by problem, not by established disease diagnosis, emulates how animals present to the veterinary hospital and simplifies the formulation of a correct diagnosis. Within each chapter, discussions of neurologic disease include a review of the localization criteria and the diseases that can cause that problem, plus treatment and surgical techniques. Lead author Michael D. Lorenz brings decades of experience to neurologic assessment, using a diagnostic approach that requires minimal knowledge of neuroanatomy. A problem-based approach is organized by presenting sign rather than by condition, guiding you to logical conclusions regarding diagnosis and treatment. Algorithms diagram the logic necessary to localize lesions and to formulate diagnostic plans. Coverage of current diagnostic techniques includes the use of diagnostic tools, such as radiology, spinal fluid analysis, electrodiagnosis, and MR imaging. Case histories in each chapter present a problem and the results of the neurologic examination, then ask you to solve the problem by localizing the lesion, listing probable causes, and making a diagnostic plan. Answers are provided at the back of the book. A consistent format for each case history includes signalment, history, physical examination findings, and neurologic examination. A comprehensive appendix describes species and breeds that have a congenital predisposition for particular neurologic diseases. Extensive references make it easy to pursue in-depth research of more advanced topics. A companion website includes 20 narrated video clips with accompanying PowerPoint slides that correlate to the case histories in the book, covering neurologic assessment and clinical problems such as paresis of one limb, tetraparesis, stupor, seizures, ataxia of the head and limbs, and cranial nerve disorders. Two new co-authors, Jean Coates and Marc Kent, board-certified in neurology, enhance the credibility of this edition. A full-color design and numerous illustrations include enhanced images of neuroanatomy and pathology.
