This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charlotte Downing, the Duchess of Charming, wants what she wants. Today, it's a fine pair of lacy slippers crafted by the renowned Ella's Establishment. To be picture perfect for her presentation to the queen, Charlotte will survive crashed ceilings and falling bricks. Yet, has she met her match in the conservative merchant, whose autumn-colored eyes make her pulse race, especially when he says no? Caught between the glittering world of the ton and the respectable profession of selling shoes, Edwin Cinder can't understand the lady's persistence or the fire lighting her blue eyes when she's challenged. With his lack of pedigree, there's no chance for this common God-fearing man to win her hand, but he'll risk all to save the duchess from the ravages of a London gale. Swept Away is a Regency retelling of Cinderella with a twist.
Book Synopsis A Light from the Shadows by : Eric Micha'el Leventhal
Download or read book A Light from the Shadows written by Eric Micha'el Leventhal and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2012-03-21 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For thousands of years, spiritual and religious practitioners in India, Tibet, and elsewhere have made special use of prayer bead garlands called "mala" in chanting the divine Name and other words of power. Even today, these sacred objects are believed to aid the seeker in establishing a rhythmic centering of consciousness, reconnecting him or her with the energies believed to sustain the natural world. In the spirit of this same meditative tradition, 108 original poetic insights form the body of this powerful and nuanced exploration of individual and cosmic identity, acceptance, and psychological freedom. With a thematic structure corresponding to the seven major "chakras" or energy centers of the human body, "A Light from the Shadows" guides the reader on a journey of personal revelation: from an introduction to personal mythology and its power to shape our life experience; to the role of suffering and love in the creation of identity; to the subjective nature of time, separateness, and linear causality. This unique and engaging collection of quotable wisdom is the perfect companion gift, not just for the spiritual seeker or adept, but for anyone interested in taking his or her first step towards a larger understanding of the universe and our place in it. Their responses, scattered throughout, add yet another dimension to this book: "Drawing is a moment of poetry." "Drawing is to art what physics is to science." "Drawing is art stripped to its bare bones." Above all, it is the art itself that will cause you to keep this volume handy on the coffee table or bookshelf for when you want to curl up, look at the world through these artists' eyes, and come away with a more vivid sense of what drawing is--or can be--to you. Book Synopsis Batangas: My Sky and Earth by : Bong Serrano
Download or read book Batangas: My Sky and Earth written by Bong Serrano and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2023-09-21 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Bong Serrano learned that his older brother, Boying, had cancer, the notes he had jotted down about his childhood took on new meaning. Memories of his time with his family in the Philippines came rushing back. At the center of those memories were the precious moments he’d spent with his Kuya. Faced with his brother’s impending death, Bong asked himself: “What if one day I lose my memories? Who will remember us?” Thus began Bong’s yearslong journey of immortalizing not only his childhood but also his country’s history and traditions. Bong grew up in the southern province of Batangas, on Luzon Island. Batangas: My Sky and Earth is a celebration of that childhood. This memoir takes you into a world made rich by the intricate descriptions of life in the Philippines in the 1970s and ’80s, where the family unit is close, and many households are multigenerational. From family dynamics to church duties to delicious food and the inevitable annual typhoons, Bong invites you to experience his culture from the inside. Throughout this memoir, Bong honors his childhood home and country and the memory of his beloved brother. The choice to interweave Tagalog throughout this book’s pages helps to steep the story in Filipino culture further. A whole village raised this boy, and as Bong looks back on his childhood, the lessons he learned come to the foreground: clarity, forgiveness, tradition, and love.
Download or read book Crowning Glories written by Harriet Stone and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2019-04-08 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crowning Glories integrates Louis XIV’s propaganda campaigns, the transmission of Northern art into France, and the rise of empiricism in the eighteenth century – three historical touchstones – to examine what it would have meant for France’s elite to experience the arts in France simultaneously with Netherlandish realist painting. In an expansive study of cultural life under the Sun King, Harriet Stone considers the monarchy’s elaborate palace decors, the court’s official records, and the classical theatre alongside Northern images of daily life in private homes, urban markets, and country fields. Stone argues that Netherlandish art assumes an unobtrusive yet, for the history of ideas, surprisingly dramatic role within the flourishing of the arts, both visual and textual, in France during Louis XIV’s reign. Netherlandish realist art represented thinking about knowledge that challenged the monarchy’s hold on the French imagination, and its efforts to impose the king’s portrait as an ideal and proof of his authority. As objects appreciated for their aesthetic and market value, Northern realist paintings assumed an uncontroversial place in French royal and elite collections. Flemish and Dutch still lifes, genre paintings, and cityscapes, however, were not merely accoutrements of power, acquisitions made by those with influence and money. Crowning Glories reveals how the empirical orientation of Netherlandish realism exposed French court society to a radically different mode of thought, one that would gain full expression in the Encyclopédie of Diderot and d’Alembert.
