Often exhausted, anxious, and emotionally volatile, they are beset by physical discomforts, fearful of intimacy, afraid for their children, worried about recurrence. Anticipating a return to “normalcy,” they discover that the old version of normal no longer applies. There could be no more knowledgeable guide for women embarking on this complicated journey than Hester Hill Schnipper, who is herself both an experienced oncology social worker and a breast cancer survivor. This comprehensive handbook provides jargon-free information on the wide range of practical issues women face as they navigate the journey back to health, including: •Managing physical problems such as fatigue, hot flashes, and aches and pains •Handling relationships: your children, your partner, your parents, your friends. •How to regain emotional and sexual intimacy •Coping with financial and workplace issues •Genetic testing: why, whether, when •How to move beyond the fear of recurrence •And much more This indispensable book will help you rediscover your capacity for joy as you move forward into the future—as a survivor.

Book excerpt: Medical doctors help their patients by following established medical procedures that include physical examination and testing, which identifies the root of their illness. Then, they try to help patients by prescribing medications, various treatments or surgical procedures that assist in the recovery of the patient.Medical doctors are scientific, they are trained to understand what they can prove, but battling cancer, for me, required a combination of the physical and the spiritual. I used a common-sense synergistic approach to dealing with my breast cancer. In the subsequent chapters, I hope you will be encouraged by the steps I took to achieve my recovery. Here are some tips: 1) When dealing with cancer, you must determine what you want, which is total healing. Don't let your mind tell you that it's not possible to achieve it. Consider doing a synergy. This is a great way to fight cancer. In my experience, the majority of cancer patients rely heavily on just one method of treatment. For instance, they would do chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation only, others are convinced that they can beat cancer by using natural herbs alone; still, others try prayer alone, under the mistaken notion, that prayer without action, will bear results. I chose what seemed like common- sense to me, I considered my options and decided to create a synergy: a combination of all the methods. 2) Share your situation with your significant others. You will need their undying devotion on this journey. If no one else knows, then, how can they help you? Or, even pray for you? 3) Set goals and resolve to achieve them gradually and sequentially. Some will be minor, and some major, for example: changing your eating habits. Remember to maintain a plan for your success. Be specific about the results you expect. Don't aim only to stop your cancer from spreading, instead, strive to starve and kill it! 4) You must visualize what you expect. By faith, see the tumors and cancer cells disappear forever. Imagine it clearly in vivid detail. 5) Don't be afraid to face this challenge. The Bible states that God has not given us the spirit of fear. Fear does not promote good health. Now is the time to exercise common-sense judgments and soundness of mind. Remember, God is in control. 6) The Creator has already established master techniques for total restoration. One may find many resources on how to meditate on God's Word. But, it takes more than just meditation and medicine to maintain health. It takes a complete lifestyle change. It takes a love that never dies. Like the love of my husband who supported me through the pain and suffering or like the love of my best friend, Marlene Robinson, who always encouraged and wished the best for me. 7) Finally, persevere. Occupy your mind with positive thoughts. Get rid of every flicker of doubt. Know that whatever you think, focus on and work hard at, that is what you are going to get more of. So, let your belief be perfectly secure and settled in God.

Book excerpt: kira-kira (kee' ra kee' ra): glittering; shining Glittering. That's how Katie Takeshima's sister, Lynn, makes everything seem. The sky is kira-kira because its color is deep but see-through at the same time. The sea is kira-kira for the same reason. And so are people's eyes. When Katie and her family move from a Japanese community in Iowa to the Deep South of Georgia, it's Lynn who explains to her why people stop them on the street to stare. And it's Lynn who, with her special way of viewing the world, teaches Katie to look beyond tomorrow. But when Lynn becomes desperately ill, and the whole family begins to fall apart, it is up to Katie to find a way to remind them all that there is always something glittering -- kira-kira -- in the future. Luminous in its persistence of love and hope, Kira-Kira is Cynthia Kadohata's stunning debut in middle-grade fiction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestseller that inspired the Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winning film. The funniest book you’ll ever read about death. It is a universally acknowledged truth that high school sucks. But on the first day of his senior year, Greg Gaines thinks he’s figured it out. The answer to the basic existential question: How is it possible to exist in a place that sucks so bad? His strategy: remain at the periphery at all times. Keep an insanely low profile. Make mediocre films with the one person who is even sort of his friend, Earl. This plan works for exactly eight hours. Then Greg’s mom forces him to become friends with a girl who has cancer. This brings about the destruction of Greg’s entire life. “Mr. Andrews’ often hilarious teen dialogue is utterly convincing, and his characters are compelling. Greg’s random sense of humor, terrible self-esteem and general lack of self-awareness all ring true. Like many YA authors, Mr. Andrews blends humor and pathos with true skill, but he steers clear of tricky resolutions and overt life lessons, favoring incremental understanding and growth.” —Pittsburgh Post-Gazette “One need only look at the chapter titles (‘Let’s Just Get This Embarrassing Chapter Out of the Way’) to know that this is one funny book.” —Booklist (starred review) “Though this novel begs inevitable thematic comparisons to John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars, it stands on its own in inventiveness, humor and heart.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Book excerpt: Newbery-winning Rules meets Counting by 7s in this affecting story of a girl’s devotion to her brother and what it means to be home When eleven-year-old Thyme Owens’ little brother, Val, is accepted into a new cancer drug trial, it’s just the second chance that he needs. But it also means the Owens family has to move to New York, thousands of miles away from Thyme’s best friend and everything she knows and loves. The island of Manhattan doesn’t exactly inspire new beginnings, but Thyme tries to embrace the change for what it is: temporary. After Val’s treatment shows real promise and Mr. Owens accepts a full-time position in the city, Thyme has to face the frightening possibility that the move to New York is permanent. Thyme loves her brother, and knows the trial could save his life—she’d give anything for him to be well—but she still wants to go home, although the guilt of not wanting to stay is agonizing. She finds herself even more mixed up when her heart feels the tug of new friends, a first crush, and even a crotchety neighbor and his sweet whistling bird. All Thyme can do is count the minutes, the hours, and days, and hope time can bring both a miracle for Val and a way back home. With equal parts heart and humor, Melanie Conklin’s debut is a courageous and charming story of love and family—and what it means to be counted.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Michael L. Printz Medal ★“King’s narrative concerns are racism, patriarchy, colonialism, white privilege, and the ingrained systems that perpetuate them. . . . [Dig] will speak profoundly to a generation of young people who are waking up to the societal sins of the past and working toward a more equitable future.”—Horn Book, starred review “I’ve never understood white people who can’t admit they’re white. I mean, white isn’t just a color. And maybe that’s the problem for them. White is a passport. It’s a ticket.” Five estranged cousins are lost in a maze of their family’s tangled secrets. Their grandparents, former potato farmers Gottfried and Marla Hemmings, managed to trade digging spuds for developing subdivisions and now they sit atop a million-dollar bank account—wealth they’ve refused to pass on to their adult children or their five teenage grandchildren. “Because we want them to thrive,” Marla always says. But for the Hemmings cousins, “thriving” feels a lot like slowly dying of a poison they started taking the moment they were born. As the rot beneath the surface of the Hemmings’ white suburban respectability destroys the family from within, the cousins find their ways back to one another, just in time to uncover the terrible cost of maintaining the family name. With her inimitable surrealism, award winner A.S. King exposes how a toxic culture of polite white supremacy tears a family apart and how one determined generation can dig its way out.
