Within this book, there are stories from my time in the RAF, when working on the Canberra with 73 Squadron in Cyprus. This book should be of interest to people who have a fondness for aircraft, particularly those aircraft no longer in service. The Canberra was an important part of the RAF during the period known as the Cold War, the late 1960s to the early 1970s. I was born in Plymouth in Devon. I joined the Royal Air Force in February 1967, trained in the Airframe trade. That particular trade is what the book is based upon. I was posted to RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus in July 1968, where I worked on the Canberra in the hangar, known as second line servicing, then I was attached to 73 Squadron where I carried out first line servicing. The stories in this book are true; they are my personal experiences.

It could outmanoeuvre all the fighters of the time and it could climb way above their operating ceilings. Yet this Cold War equivalent of the Mosquito was simple to maintain and a delight to fly, although it could bite any pilot who did not treat it with respect. The Canberra B 2 first flew on 21 April 1950 and entered frontline service with No 101 Sqn in May 1951. In a testament to the aircraft's benign handling characteristics, the transition programme consisted of only 20 hours in the Gloster Meteor and three hours in the dual-control Canberra trainer. With a maximum speed of 470 knots (871 km/h), a standard service ceiling of 48,000 ft (14,600 m) and the ability to carry a 3.6-tonne (7,900-lb) payload, the Canberra was an instant success.

In 1968, the RAF Commands that had become famous in World War Two—Fighter, Bomber, Coastal, Air Support and Signals Commands—were combined into the single Strike Command, an amalgamation that served throughout the remaining years of the Cold War, in the Falklands, and in the Middle East in Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm and Granby. This organizational change caused re-equipment, base changes and increasing economic constraints. The Royal Navy was now responsible for the UK’s nuclear deterrent in the form of their Polaris submarines, so the RAF’s V-Bomber Force were now relegated to tanker operations, with the exception of the lone Vulcan that was sent to the Falklands conflict. The Command’s fleet of fast jets became more adaptable, with single types assuming the roles of fighter, bomber, reconnaissance, and maritime attack. The aircraft also became multinational in their design and manufacture as Britain’s postwar lead in aircraft design had been frittered away by years of thoughtless government, leading to a single company for production. Apart from the brilliant Harrier which the US continues to develop and build, other aircraft flown by the Command were from European syndicates, such as the Tornado and Jaguar. The US supplied the transports in the form of the faithful Hercules, and Europe most of the helicopter fleet. Exploring the operations that took place during this military wing’s existence, the aircraft they flew and the men who flew them, RAF Strike Command is a tribute to the fast-dwindling power of the Royal Air Force.

Sopwith Camel, SE.5, Bristol F2B Fighter and the Airco DH4 were all great successes in the relatively early days of flight. In the thirties the Bristol Bulldog fighter was an outstanding export success and the Short 'C' Class flying boat, later to become the Sunderland of World War II fame, pioneered the long-distance routes to the Empire. The pugnacious foreign policy of Hitler's Reich rung sudden alarm bells, rapid advances in fighting aircraft for the RAF became a premium objective. The brilliant Geodic construction of the Vickers Wellington bomber helped it survive terrible punishment throughout World War II, both the Hawker Hurricane and the Supermarine Spitfire saved England from invasion and the Bristol Beaufighter, de Havilland Mosquito and Avro Lancaster took the war to enemy soil. The Gloster Meteor became the word's first operational jet fighter and the English Electric Canberra became the RAF's first jet bomber and was manufactured under licence in the USA as the Martin B-57. In post-war years the Vickers Viscount became the world's first turboprop airliner and eventually became Britain's best selling commercial aircraft, whilst the de Havilland Comet became the world's first jet airliner. Despite Britain's recessionary years in the 50s and early 60s, military success came with the beautiful Hawker Hunter, the super-sonic Fairey Delta experimental aircraft that broke the World Air Speed Record and the Vickers Valiant that pioneered the operational techniques to deliver Britain's nuclear deterrent. Later, there followed the Mach 2 English Electric Lightning and the ill-fated TSR-2, the cancellation of which is still regarded as one of the greatest mistakes ever made in British aviation history. Finally, the Harrier, the world's first vertical take-off and landing jet fighter that is still in service and now only being built in the USA. That new dimension was the arrival of powered flight.Display flying began within five years of the Wright Brothers making their milestone first flight. Used in trials and evaluation the Canberra held various height and speed records, and NASA’s High Altitude Research Program WB-57s are still active. The Canberra has also had dedicated enthusiasts, and aircraft (or cockpits) still survive in museums, as well as some in flying condition.
