Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1892, Lord Frederick Arthur Stanley donated the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup – later known as the Stanley Cup – to crown the first Canadian hockey champions. Canada’s Holy Grail documents Lord Stanley’s personal politics, his desire to affect Canadian nationality and unity, and the larger transformations in Anglo-liberal political thought at the time. This book posits that the Stanley Cup fit directly within Anglo-American traditions of using sport to promote ideas of the national, and the donation of the cup occurred at a moment in history when Canadian nationalists needed identifying symbols. Jordan B. Goldstein asserts that only with a transformation in Anglo-liberal thought could the state legitimately act through culture to affect national identity. Drawing on primary source documentation from Lord Stanley’s archives, as well as statements by politicians and hockey enthusiasts, Canada’s Holy Grail integrates political thought into the realm of sport history through the discussion of a championship trophy that still stands as one of the most well-known and recognized Canadian national symbols.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadian author Catherine Parr Traill responds to what she sees as great need in her botanical novel "Canadian Wild Flowers". That is, to give a portrait of the numerous species of flowers found in Canada, and by extension North America. The preface states, "Many years ago the only work that treated in any way of the Wild Plants of Canada, the country owed to that indefatigable botanist, Frederick Pursh, whose valuable labours were but little appreciated in the country in which he toiled and died—it is to be feared but poorly rewarded during his life. The land, with all its rich vegetable resources, lay as it were an untrodden wilderness for many years, save by those hardy settlers who cared little for the forest flowers that grew in their paths. The unlettered Indians, indeed, culled a few of the herbs and barks and roots for healing purposes, and dyes wherewith to stain their squaws' basket-work and porcupine quills; and some of the old settlers had given them local and descriptive names by which they may be recognized even in the present day, but there was no one to give written descriptions, or to compile a native Flora, or even domestic Herbal of the Wild Plants of Canada. The subject seemed to excite little interest, unless in some chance traveller whom curiosity or business brought to the country. But now the schoolmaster is abroad, and better things are, we trust, in store for this our noble country...It was to supply a deficiency that has long been felt in this counter, that the Authoress first conceived the idea of writing a little volume descriptive of the most remarkable of the Wild Flowers, Shrubs and Forest Trees of Canada."

Book excerpt: What do English-speaking Canadians sound like and why? Can you tell the difference between a Canadian and an American? A Canadian and an Englishman? If so, how? Linguistically speaking is Canada a colony of Britain or a satellite of the United States? Is there a Canadian language? Speaking Canadian English, first published in 1971, in a non-technical way, describes English as it is spoken in Canada – its vocabulary, pronunciation, syntax, grammar, spelling, slang. This title comments on the history of Canadian English – how it came to sound the way it does – and attempts to predict what will happen to it in the future. This book will be of interest to students of linguistics.

Book excerpt: Wars, raids and rebellions have driven the history of Canada forward from the earliest days of New France, through the two world wars to the present day. Beginning with the Battle of Lake Champlain in 1609 and ending with the second Battle of Panjwaye in 2006 (part of the war in Afghanistan), Great Canadian Battles features conflicts in Canada and abroad. Author Edward Humphreys analyses the tactics, tragedies and triumphs of Canadian warfare, including military feats such as Colonel de Salaberry's unlikely victory at Chateaugay and the famous Battle of Vimy Ridge. Battles Include: - Quebec, 1775 The New Year's Eve assault, fought during a blizzard, that marked the final attempt to capture the fortified city. - Cut Knife, 1885 The brilliant victory of Poundmaker over the united forces of the North-West Mounted Police, Canadian Army and local militias. - The Somme, 1916 The horrific battle in which tanks were deployed for the first time.
