Book Synopsis Rethinking Canadian Aid by : Stephen brown
Download or read book Rethinking Canadian Aid written by Stephen brown and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2016-06-09 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contributes to a “rethinking” Canadian aid at four different levels. First, it undertakes a collective rethinking of the foundations of Canadian aid, including both its normative underpinnings – an altruistic desire to reduce poverty and inequality and achieve greater social justice, a means to achieve commercial or strategic self-interest, or a projection of Canadian values and prestige onto the world stage – and aid’s past record. Second, it analyzes how the Canadian government government is itself rethinking Canadian aid, including greater focus on the Americas and specific themes (such as mothers, children and youth, and fragile states) and countries, increased involvement of the private sector (particularly Canadian mining companies), and greater emphasis on self-interest. Third, it rethinks where Canadian aid is or should be heading, including recommendations for improved development assistance. Fourth, it highlights how serious rethinking is required on aid itself: the concept, its relation to non-aid policies that affect development in the Global South, and the rise of new providers of development assistance, especially “emerging economies”. Each of these novel challenges holds important implications for Canada, for its development policies and for its declining influence in the morphing global aid regime.
Book Synopsis Rethinking Canadian Aid by : Stephen Brown
Download or read book Rethinking Canadian Aid written by Stephen Brown and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2015-01-08 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2013, the government abolished the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), which had been Canada’s flagship foreign aid agency for decades, and transferred its functions to the newly renamed Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD). As the government is rethinking Canadian aid and its relationship with other foreign policy and commercial objectives, the time is ripe to rethink Canadian aid more broadly. Edited by Stephen Brown, Molly den Heyer and David R. Black, this is the first book on Canadian foreign aid since CIDA was folded into DFATD. Designed to reach a variety of audiences, contributions by twenty-one scholars and experts in the field offer an incisive examination of Canada’s record and recent changes in Canadian foreign aid, such as its focus on maternal and child health and on the extractive sector. Many chapters also ask more fundamental questions concerning the intersection of the moral imperative that underpins aid and the trend towards greater self-interest. For instance, what are and what should be the underlying motives of Canadian aid? How compatible are altruism and self-interest in foreign aid? To what extent should aid be integrated with Canada’s other policies and practices? The portrait that emerges is a sobering one. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in Canada’s changing role in the world and how it reflects on Canada.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of Canada's mixed foreign aid record since 1950. Morrison (political studies, Trent U. In Perterborough) looks at the more than $50 billion in capital and expertise that has been transferred to developing countries through the Canadian Official Development Assistance (ODA) program in the last 50 years. Numerous tables provide economic and political information about Canadian donations and where and how they went where they went. He calls for a renewed and reformed Canadian commitment to development cooperation at a time when the gap between the world's richest and poorest has been widening and millions are still being born into poverty. Book Synopsis Canada and the Challenges of International Development and Globalization by : Mahmoud Masaeli
Download or read book Canada and the Challenges of International Development and Globalization written by Mahmoud Masaeli and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2018-08-28 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are Canada’s various links with international development and globalization? They extend beyond foreign aid to diplomacy, trade, finance, aid, immigration, military intervention (both peacekeeping and combat roles), membership in a variety of international organizations, relations with indigenous peoples, and people-to-people links. This multi-disciplinary and multi-author textbook, designed for first- or second-year students, introduces the main concepts, theories, and perspectives that have shaped Canada’s interactions with developing countries in a globalizing world. It starts by considering Canada as a case study in international development and globalization. It examines Canada’s diplomatic, economic, military, social, immigration and aid policies, how they have changed over time and how they have interacted with each other and with Canada’s treatment of Indigenous peoples. The book presents economic, political, and cultural dimensions of the process of globalization and the ways they affect Canada; examines the public institutions, private sector and civil society organizations in Canada; and explores the moral imperatives behind Canadian international policy. Finally, it examines current issues, including Canada’s promotion of human rights, democracy, good governance, support to the private sector, and relations with fragile and conflict-affected states and the emerging economies. Finalist - PROSE Award, Textbook/Social Sciences January 2019 This book is published in English.

Contributors from the government, development organizations, and academia analyze the components of Canadian aid, the issues the agency has to deal with, and the pressures it responds to. Book Synopsis Canadian Foreign Policy in Africa by : Edward Ansah Akuffo
Download or read book Canadian Foreign Policy in Africa written by Edward Ansah Akuffo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After over fifty-years of Canadian engagement with Africa, no comprehensive literature exists on Canada's security policy in Africa and relations towards Africa's regional organizations. The literature on Canada's foreign policy in Africa to date has largely focused on development assistance. For the first time, Edward Akuffo combines historical and contemporary material on Canada's development and security policy while analyzing the linkage between these sets of foreign policy practices on the African continent. The book makes an important contribution to the debate on Canada's foreign policy generally, and on Africa's approach to peace, security and development, while shedding light on a new theoretical lens - non-imperial internationalism - to understand Canada's foreign policy. The author captures an emerging trend of cooperation on peace, security, and development between the Canadian government and African regional organizations in the twenty-first century. The resulting book is a valuable addition to the literature on African politics, new regionalisms, foreign policy, global governance, and international development studies.
