Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canadian Goods and the World-Market These considerations - the satisfactory financing of the pro duction and distribution of raw materials by a system of mobile credits, and the tribute paid to Canadian industry by some of the shrewdest business concerns in the English-speaking world in locating branch factories in Canada - should be of interest to the importer abroad. They in fact show that Canadian indus try, far from being a sporadic growth, has a sound economic basis, and that the importer can depend upon even quality and steady supply when he orders goods from Canadian factories. Book excerpt: On 2 January 1988, Canada and the United States signed what was then the most comprehensive free trade agreeement the world had ever seen. This book is the story of those FTA negotiations, the preparations for and conduct of the negotiations, as well as the ideas and issues behind them. From their unique perspective as participants, Michael Hart, Bill Dymond, and Colin Robertson capture the drama and the personalities involved in the long struggle to make a free trade deal. They describe the extensive consultations, the turf-fighting among insiders, the innate caution of both politicians and bureaucrats, and the need to cultivate powerful constituencies in order to overcome the inertia of conventional wisdom.

Book Synopsis The Cancer Stage of Capitalism by : John McMurtry
Download or read book The Cancer Stage of Capitalism written by John McMurtry and published by Pluto Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this bold new look at the recent uncontrolled spread of global capitalism, John McMurtry, professor of philosophy at the University of Guelph, develops the metaphor of modern capitalism as a cancer. Its invasive growth, he argues, threatens to break down our society's immune system and--if not soon restrained--could reverse all the progress that has been made toward social equity and stability. On every continent, in every state, there are indicators of profound economic and environmental collapse. From the lands of indigenous communities to the currency markets of Asia, from the ocean floors to the ozone layer, the collapse is all-encompassing and deep-reaching. John McMurtry traces the causes of this global disorder back to the mutating assumptions of market theory that now govern the world’s economy. He diagnoses the malaise as a pathologist would a biological cancer, tracking the delinked circuits of the global system’s monetised growth as a carcinogenic disorder at the social level of life-organization. In the wide-lensed tradition of Adam Smith, Marx and Keynes, McMurtry cuts across academic disciplines and boundaries to penetrate the inner logic of the system’s problems. Far from pessimistic, he argues that the way out of the global crisis is to be found in an evolving substructure of history which provides a common ground of resolution across ethnic and national divisions. Reaching beyond conventional textbooks, this fascinating study offers a new paradigm which is accessible to intelligent citizens the world over.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies in political economy are now at a crossroads. The revival of political economy as an important area of research in Canada began in the early 1970s with the publication of Kari Levitt's Silent Surrender. In 1976 it was launched in earnest by the first session on Canadian political economy at the meetings of the Canadian Learned Societies in Quebec City. While many academics now classify themselves as political economists, not until The New Canadian Political Economy has there been any attempt to systematically survey, review, and assess the scores of books and articles which can now be considered as belonging in this field.

Book Synopsis Beyond the Miracle of the Market by : Robert H. Bates
Download or read book Beyond the Miracle of the Market written by Robert H. Bates and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-05-09 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As capitalism defeated socialism in Eastern Europe, the market displaced the state in the developing world. In Beyond the Miracle of the Market, first published in 2005, Bates focuses on Kenya, a country that continued to grow while others declined in Africa, and mounts a prescient critique of the neo-classical turn in development economics. Attributing Kenya's exceptionalism to its economic institutions, this book pioneers the use of 'new institutionalism' in the field of development. In doing so, however, the author accuses the approach of being apolitical. Institutions introduce power into economic life. To account for their impact, economic analysis must therefore be complemented by political analysis; micro-economics must be imbedded in political science. In making this argument, Bates relates Kenya's subsequent economic decline to the change from the Kenyatta to the Moi regime and the subsequent use of the power of economic institutions to redistribute rather than to create wealth.
