Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canadian Citizenship a Treatise on Civil Government The design of the author in the preparation of this work is to give young people a general outline of the Canadian system of government, and to urge the importance of that moral and intellectual training which forms the basis of good citizenship. To persons who live under democratic institutions, an intelligent acquaintance with the manner in which they are governed is obviously essential. Political development is impossible unless the principles of civil government are understood. In England the educational progress of the last thirty years, together with the liberal extension of the franchise, has led to the circulation of several books of a popular character, dealing with the rights and duties of citizens In France, where national education has, perhaps, received more attention within the last fifteen years than in any other country of Europe, l'instruction civique is one of the most popular branches of study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canadian History Notes The object of this little book is to awaken an interest in Canadian History to give the boys and girls of our schools a simple yet definite statement of the cause, incident and result of the impor tant events of the history of their own land; to lead them to see the steps by which Canada rose to her present proud position to see the struggle which won each of our great privileges of self government and the defects which each privilege remedied to lead them to honor and imitate the noble men and women who gave their time, their talents and their lives to work out the destiny of Canada - men whose lives teach us that Canada. Will become what her sons make her. At the same time it is hoped that the little work will be. A boon to teachers who are burdened with the many subjects of the school curriculum and the thousand interests of the school room. The two simple little sketches give a bird's-eye view of the whole period, refer to topics which are discussed in the book, and proceeding from the general to the particular, they arouse curiosity while they engender a spirit of research. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Federal Government in Canada Canada and the passage of another Act providing for a very important constitutional change. The proclamation Of the Act Of 1841 1 was the inauguration Of the Fourth Period Of our political development which lasted until 1867. The discontent that existed in Canada for SO many years had the effect, not Of diminishing but Of en larging the political privileges Of the Canadian people. The Imperial government proved by this measure that they were desirous Of meeting the wishes Of the people for a larger grant Of self-government. The French Canadians, however looked upon the Act with much disfavor and suspicion. The report Of Lord Durham and the union itself indicated that there was a feeling in England that the separation Of the two races in 17 91 had been a political mistake, Since it prevented anything like a national amalgamation; and it was now proposed to make an effort in the Opposite direction and diminish the importance Of the French Canadian section with its distinct language and institutions. The fact that the French language was no longer placed on the same footing as English, in Oth cial documents and parliamentary proceedings, together with the fact that Upper Canada had the same representation as Lower Canada in the assembly, despite the larger population Of the latter section, was considered an insult and an injustice to the French Canadians, against which they did not fail to remon strate for years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution of the Dominion of Canada: Its Government and Its Politics Certainly in one respect parliamentary government is most impressive, and that is in its capacity promptly to determine the popular will upon a vital issue. An American presidential election seldom ej'ects this. The issue may have already passed into the background before the vote can be taken, and the large number of controversies pressed upon the American elec torate at the end of each four years confuse the main issue and render the decision so doubtful that it is rarely found binding upon the administration elected to power. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Canadian's View of the Battle of Plattsburgh It is of splendid augury that a great State thinks it fitting to ask to help in the celebration of the Centenary of a battle, citizens of a neighbouring state whose flag suffered there a reverse; and it is of even grander significance that these citizens accept that invitation with pleasure and, indeed, with eagerness. You of the State of New York see nothing extraordinary, much less improper, in inviting us to rejoice with you in the gladness of your nation; and we, Canadians to the finger-tips, Britons to the last drop of our blood, cordially unite with you in the glory of your inheritance. For the true significance of this occasion is not the victory and the defeat, but the adumbration of a hundred years of peace. We Canadians naturally and necessarily look at the war of 1812 from a different point of view from that of the American. Patriotism is cruel, and cannot be expected to be other than unjust.
