Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of Canadian Plants, Vol. 1: Polypetalae The purpose of this work is to place in the hands of Canadian botanists, in a connected form, the knowledge so far obtained of the extent and distribution of the Flora of Canada. It is believed that this Catalogue will satisfy a long-felt want, and enable botanists to add to, or make more accurate, the data at present available, and in the course of a few years remove the serious difficulties which now stand in the way of a "Flora of Canada." Forty-three years ago Sir William Jackson Hooker published his great work the "Flora Boreali Americana," and in it recorded all the knowledge obtained of species and their distribution by the early travellers and explorers. In the same year, 1840, Torrey and Gray published their work on the Flora of North America, which included the Polypetalse only. Three years later the Gamopetalse to the end of the Composite, was published by the same authors. After the lapse of thirty-five years Dr. Asa Gray published the remaining Gamopetalae in the year 1878. The four works above enumerated contain all we know of Canadian botany, beyond the lists which have appeared occasionally in Canadian scientific publications. In giving the distribution of species I have freely availed myself of all published records. My own observations, having extended from the Eastern Provinces to the Pacific, enable me to speak with accuracy and decision on many points which a more limited knowledge of distribution would preclude. The collections made during the last ten years by the gentlemen on the staff of the Geological and Natural History Survey in various parts of Canada have been examined by me, and also many other collections made in Ontario. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of Canadian Plants, Vol. 1: Endogens The first volume of this Catalogue of Canadian Plants consists of three parts separately published and bearing date 1883, 1884 and 1886 respectively. Part I. includes the Polypetalae, Part II. the Gamopetalae, Part III. the Apetalae and Gymnosperms. Part IV., now issued, is devoted to the Endogens, and forms the first portion of Volume II. of the Catalogue. Part V. will include the ferns and their allies with the mosses and liverworts, and it is intended in Part VI. to catalogue the lichens, fungi and seaweeds. Over 2,000 species of named cryptogamous plants, to be catalogued in Parts V. and VI., are now in the herbarium, and it is probable that the number will be raised to 2,500 before these parts are published, so that the entire work will enumerate about 5,500 species of plants (indigenous and introduced) found growing without cultivation within the limits of Canada. Since the publication of Part III. extensive collections have been made by James M. Macoun on the shores and islands of James Bay. Dr. G. M. Dawson has made valuable and interesting notes and collections in that part of the North-West Territories bordering on Alaska. The writer spent five months collecting on Vancouverlsland and gathered much valuable information regarding its flora. That part of this additional information which is applicable to the Endogens is included in the present issue. In accordance with the plan adopted at the commencement of the work, I have placed myself in communication with specialists in the various orders and have had their assistance in the determining and verifying of critical or new species. As on former occasions, Dr. Sereno Watson has rendered valuable assistance, especially in the Liliaceae and Juncaceae. In the Naiadaceae I have had very much help from Mr. Arthur Bennett, F.L.S., Croydon, England, and from Rev. Thomas Morong, Ashland, Mass. Book excerpt: The large and growing Mitchell family, transferring their location to Montreal, can’t find a house to buy or rent. They settle, over Mother’s protests, for a remote, rickety summer house in the woods near a lake. The dangers, antics, quarrels, and fun which now unroll bring each member of the family into vivid characterization. Meanwhile we meet some delightful French Canadians and taste the special qualities of rural Quebec in the late 1940’s. Illustrated by the author.

Book excerpt: Robertson Davies (1913–1995), one of Canada’s most distinguished authors of the twentieth century, was known for his work as a novelist, playwright, critic, journalist, and professor. This descriptive bibliography is dedicated to his writing career, covering all publications from his first venture into print at the age of nine to works published posthumously to 2011. Entries include each of Davies’ signed publications and those pseudonymous or anonymous writings he acknowledged having written. Included are his plays, novels, journalism, academic writing, translations, interviews, speeches, lectures, unsigned articles and editorials, films, audio recordings, and multimedia editions. Also listed is a generous sampling of unsigned articles and editorials. Using Davies’ archives and the archives of other authors, organizations, and publishers, Carl Spadoni and Judith Skelton Grant present A Bibliography of Robertson Davies to serve the research demands of Canadian literature and book history scholars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walt Kelly blended nonsense language, poetry, and political and social satire to make Pogo an essential contribution to American “intellectual” comics. As the strip progressed, it became a hilarious platform for Kelly’s scathing political views in which he skewered national bogeymen like J. Edgar Hoover, Joseph McCarthy, George Wallace, and Richard Nixon. Walt Kelly started when newspaper strips shied away from politics ― Pogo was ahead of its time and ahead of later strips (such as Doonesbury and The Boondocks) that tackled political issues. Our first (of 12) volume reprints approximately the first two years of Pogo ― dailies and (for the first time) full-color Sundays. This first volume also introduces such enduring supporting characters as Porkypine, Churchy LaFemme, Beauregard Bugleboy, Seminole Sam, Howland Owl, and many others. And for Christmas, 1949, Kelly started his tradition of regaling his readers with his infamously and gloriously mangled Christmas carols.

Book excerpt: "He wants to sit and visit at the kitchen table, and he can hardly wait to get on the road again." —From Chapter 1 Robert Kroetsch, one of Canada's most important writers, was a fierce regionalist with a porous yet resilient sense of "home." Although his criticism and fiction have received extensive attention, his poetry remains underexplored. This exuberantly polyvocal text, insightfully written by dennis cooley—who knew Kroetsch and worked with him for decades—seeks to correct that imbalance. The Home Place offers a dazzling, playful, and intellectually complex conversation drawing together personal recollections, Kroetsch's archival materials, and the international body of Kroetsch scholarship. For literary scholars and anyone who appreciates Canadian literature, The Home Place will represent the standard critical evaluation of Kroetsch's poetry for years to come.
