Book excerpt: This report focuses on Canada's experience with respect to the implementation of Article 6 of the Convention on Biological Diversity, which stipulates, among other things, that each contracting party shall develop national strategies, plans, or programs for conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity. The introduction reviews the nature of Canada's biodiversity, the importance of biodiversity to Canadians, the responsibility for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, and the threats facing Canada's biodiversity. It then describes the background to the adoption of the Convention in Canada and the Canadian Biodiversity Strategy, and sets out some of the key challenges faced by Canada in its implementation of the Convention and its national strategy. These are discussed in the areas of science and information for decision making, training and education, legislation and incentives, integration of biodiversity considerations into decision making, and monitoring progress. The final section reviews Canada's experience in international co-operation on biodiversity projects. The annex contains an inventory of initiatives which illustrate the degree to which biodiversity conservation and sustainable use is being incorporated into policies, plans, and programs at the local, regional, and national levels.

Book excerpt: This document sets out the response of the Canadian Government to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity. The response was the result of an 18-month process, conducted by a federal-provincial-territorial working group under mandate from environment, wildlife, parks, and forestry ministries. Information was obtained from existing biodiversity-related legislation, policies, and programs; a comparison of current activities and articles of the Convention; submissions from advisory group members; reports from expert focus groups; and the results of workshops that reviewed and debated issues and developed recommendations. The document addresses the biological foundation for sustainable development, loss of habitat, atmospheric change, human population and consumption, undervaluing and conserving biodiversity, and contributing to global biodiversity conservation. Goals are identified as conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity; ecological management; education and awareness; incentives and legislation; and international cooperation. The document also addresses implementation and the place of Indigenous communities.

Book excerpt: Clearcut forests, endangered species, national parks, loss of crop varieties: in the last decade the common element of these varied concerns has become widely recognized. These are all biodiversity issues: they relate to the variety of life on Earth and our relationship with it. This relationship is now capturing the attention of activists, scientists, policymakers, and the public, from negotiations at the United Nations to concerns about the neighborhood park. Biodiversity issues raise many questions. How many species are there, and what do they need to survive? How have we learned what we know about biodiversity? What is its value? What policies are needed to protect it? Who participates in protecting biodiversity: governments, industry, activists? This book explores answers to these questions and, in doing so, shows how biodiversity, like other complex environmental issues, can only be understood through the insights provided by many perspecives. The authors contributing to this volume include scientists, historians, anthropologists, lawyers, political scientists, economists, and planners. Together, they provide an interdisciplinary perspective on biodiversity in Canada, especially usefol for undergraduate courses in environmental and natural resource studies, geography, and political science.
