Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada Medical and Surgical Journal, Vol. 12: A Monthly Record of Medical and Surgical Science; June, 1883-August, 1884 Charles, Joseph, Antoine, Elvina and Charlotte Comeau were brothers and sisters, who came to Tracadie in early life and married into the neighboring families. Leprosy did not previously exist in the Comeau family, nor in any with whom they became connected, until it broke out with great virulence in the gene ration given. It will be noticed that the disease did not exist in the first generation of the Sonier family. This is accounted for by the fact that they were a much older family than the others, and had either died or reached old age before the outbreak of leprosy in the parish. It might be stated here, however, that old age is no absolute barrier to the Spread of the disease, as one undoubted case was admitted into the hospital at the age of eighty.
