Book excerpt: This paper argues that there are significant potential economic gains to be obtained from an EU-Canada Free Trade Agreement. The evolution of trade between the US and Canada following the signing of CUSFTA in 1989 offers a good illustration of how trade might increase after an EU-Canada FTA, as the patterns and levels of protection between the EU and Canada today are very similar to the protection that existed between the US and Canada in 1989. Although many empirical studies fail to find support for 'trade diversion' created by NAFTA (or CUSFTA) at the expense of the EU and to the benefit of the US, there is some evidence of trade diversion when detailed regional trade is examined. If indeed trade diversion has occurred due to NAFTA, then an EU-Canada FTA is welfare-enhancing for Canada. For the EU, a potential FTA can level the playing field with the US and increase the competitiveness of European firms in the Canadian market.

Book Synopsis Mega-Regional Trade Agreements: CETA, TTIP, and TiSA by : Stefan Griller
Download or read book Mega-Regional Trade Agreements: CETA, TTIP, and TiSA written by Stefan Griller and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-24 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between the EU and Canada (CETA), proposed Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership between the EU and the US (TTIP), and the plurilateral Trade in Services Agreement (TiSA) between the EU and 22 other States have sparked a great deal of academic and public interest. This edited collection brings together leading experts in the field of international economic law to address the legal complexities of these treaties and provide an explanation of their core principles. In the first two chapters, this book examines changing conceptions of international economic law and the main motivations for negotiating mega-regional agreements. In nine further contributions, international experts examine sectoral issues such as the trade, investment, and dispute settlement procedures envisaged in these 'mega-regional' agreements. The book goes on to consider the progress made in intellectual property protection, the problems associated with data protection, human rights, labour, and environmental standards, issues of transparency and legitimacy, and the relationship between CETA, TTIP, and TiSA on the one hand and EU law on the other. It concludes with four chapters that discuss globalization and other fundamental questions surrounding these mega-regional agreements from economic, political science, and legal perspectives.
Book Synopsis An analysis of the benefits and critique between the free trade agreements NAFTA and CETA in a historical comparison by : Paul Petersen
Download or read book An analysis of the benefits and critique between the free trade agreements NAFTA and CETA in a historical comparison written by Paul Petersen and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2018-06-27 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1,9, Cologne Business School Köln, language: English, abstract: The following paper refers to the potential of international free trade agreements to create interconnected economic markets, which require a common trade policy of the contracting countries. The difficulty in this approach is to ensure an economic integration of both countries on the basis of bilateral treaties, despite differing cultural, social and economic attitudes. As an effect of the continuing globalization and the increased international interconnectedness, there is generally a rising number of international free trade agreements among countries with the intention to achieve economic growth and welfare that on the other hand simultaneously led to an increased amount of criticism arising from non-governmental organizations, consumer protection organizations or environmental groups. This oppositeness has received a lot of attention during the recent negotiations and implementation of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between the European Union and Canada. Similar to the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), which is a foreseen free trade agreement between the European Union and the United States that has been temporarily suspended due to huge protests, both agreements have in common that they bear more criticism that than any other free trade agreement ever before. This is why it is interesting to know to which degree there is a correlation of similarities and differences between a modern free trade agreement such as the CETA and an already established treaty like the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) between the United States, Mexico and Canada. According to the title, there will be “An analysis of the benefits and critique between the free trade agreements NAFTA and CETA in a historical comparison” with the purpose of figuring out whether a certain contracting country is benefiting from the NAFTA or the CETA or if it is experiencing any social, environmental, cultural, economic or other disadvantages. In the following segments these aspects will be examined, contrasted and evaluated with the support of studies and current data to provide meaningful findings and to give a final recommendation for action at the end of the paper.

Book Synopsis Canada and Mexico by : Ioannis Vasileiou
Download or read book Canada and Mexico written by Ioannis Vasileiou and published by . This book was released on 2019-10 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada and Mexico represent two completely different views of the North American continent. Despite the numerous differences that incontrovertibly exist between them, they are considered to be two equally notable European Union trade partners. And the reason for choosing these two case studies is precisely our will to painstakingly highlight that regardless of their several economic differences, the Union successfully manages to maintain highly beneficial trade relations with both of them. As we will see, the trade agreements examined in this book cover an enormous spectrum of tremendously significant areas such as, inter alia, trade in goods and services, competition, government procurement, intellectual property, digital trade, labor rights, environmental protection, small companies, corruption, investment, professional services and sustainable development. It goes without saying that all the abovementioned concepts are irrefutably pivotal for both the present and the future, therefore, their conscientious analysis is absolute essential with a view to a more coherent understanding.

Book excerpt: Using the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) as a case study, this paper identifies and analyses evidence of shifting forms of cooperation observable in the design and negotiation of new styled (mega-regional) Preferential Trade Agreements (PTAs) springing up in the world trade and investment system. The analysis focuses on the different strategies adopted by Canada and the EU to engage their sub-national governments and civil societies in the CETA negotiation/ratification process, and the possible implications for future mega-regional trade agreements.
Book Synopsis Who Pays for Canada? by : E.A. Heaman
Download or read book Who Pays for Canada? written by E.A. Heaman and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2020-09-17 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadians can never not argue about taxes. From the Chinese head tax to the Panama Papers, from the National Policy to the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement, tax grievances always inspire private resentments and public debates. But if resentment and debate persist, the terms of the debate have continually altered and adapted to reflect changing social, economic, and political conditions in Canada and the wider world. The centenary of income tax is the occasion for Canadian scholars to wrestle with past and present debates about tax equity, efficiency, and justice. Who Pays for Canada? explores the different ways governments can and should tax their peoples and evaluates how well Canada has done so. It brings together a diverse group of perspectives from academia - law, economics, political science, history, geography, philosophy, and accountancy - and from the wider world of activists and public servants. It asks how Canada compares to other countries and how other countries - especially the United States - influence Canadian tax policies. It also surveys internal tax tensions and politics, through the lenses of region and jurisdiction, as well as race, class, and gender. Reasoning from tax perplexities and reforms in the past and the present, it argues that fair taxation requires an informed populace and a democratically inclined public will. Above all, this book serves as a reminder that it is not only what counts as fair that is important, but how fairness is evaluated. Revealing how closely tax policy is tied to mainstream politics, human rights, and morality, Who Pays for Canada? represents new perspectives on a matter of tremendous national urgency.
