Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no doubt that ecumenism occupies a prominent place in the history of the church in the twentieth century: countless churches have been renewed through encounter with Christian sisters and brothers in other confessions and cultures. But it is not clear that this ecumenical impulse will continue to figure prominently in the church’s story. In this book Michael Kinnamon argues that the ecumenical movement, which has given such energy and direction to the church, needs to be reconceived in a way that provides renewing power for the church in this era — and he shows how this might happen. He names the problems with ecumenism, identifies strengths and accomplishments upon which the church now can build, and suggests practical, concrete steps we can take in the direction of revitalization, especially at the local level.

Download or read book Receptive Ecumenism and the Renewal of the Ecumenical Movement written by Antonia Pizzey and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Receptive Ecumenism is a ground-breaking new ecumenical approach, widely regarded as having the potential to revitalise the Ecumenical Movement. But what is Receptive Ecumenism? Why is it important? In Receptive Ecumenism and the Renewal of the Ecumenical Movement, Antonia Pizzey offers a comprehensive, systematic analysis of Receptive Ecumenism. While still emerging, Receptive Ecumenism is highly promising because it prioritises the need for ecclesial conversion. Pizzey explores the scope and complexity of Receptive Ecumenism, providing much-needed clarity on its aim, key developmental influences and distinctiveness, as well as its virtuous character and relationship with Spiritual Ecumenism. The major implementations of Receptive Ecumenism to date are investigated, along with its significance for the future of ecumenism, especially regarding its engagement with contemporary challenges.
Book Synopsis Renewing a Modern Denomination by : Andy Goodliff
Download or read book Renewing a Modern Denomination written by Andy Goodliff and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-01-19 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an exploration of the renewal of the Baptist Union of Great Britain in the 1990s, the only historic UK denomination which grew in this period. It was an exciting time, with plenty of denominational activity and engagement, both theological and institutional. The book tells this story focusing on the particular individuals involved and the wide-ranging discussions centered around mission and identity, ministry, associating, and ecumenism. It argues that there were competing visions emerging from two different streams of thought which whilst not divisive caused tension. At the end of the decade structural changes were introduced with hope for the new millennium, but the book contends that opportunities were missed for a more deeply theological renewal.

Book Synopsis Pentecostal Currents in American Protestantism by : Edith Waldvogel Blumhofer
Download or read book Pentecostal Currents in American Protestantism written by Edith Waldvogel Blumhofer and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Pentecostal Currents in American Protestantism addresses the theme of encounter within the Protestant faith by exploring moments in which identities and boundaries have been established or challenged as the Pentecostal and charismatic movements have taken their place on the American religious scene. Examining topics as diverse as the animosity that marked Pentecostalism's encounter with the Holiness movement, the forms and results of engagement between Pentecostal missionaries and Protestant mission boards in China, and the response of Southern and American Baptists to the charismatic renewal, contributors show how the confluence of the mainstream with other streams brings about questioning, realignment, and change."

Book Synopsis Grassroots Unity in the Charismatic Renewal by : Connie Ho Yan Au
Download or read book Grassroots Unity in the Charismatic Renewal written by Connie Ho Yan Au and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-02-23 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the nature of grassroots unity in the British charismatic renewal in the 1970s and its significance to ecumenism. The study is based on the five international conferences of the Fountain Trust and focuses on two grassroots activities: worship in general and the celebration of the Eucharist in particular. Worship in this setting nurtured unity through charisms, but the Eucharist exposed the inadequacy of this grassroots unity because of doctrinal and ecclesiological differences. This book aims to suggest a way forward by searching for the complementarity of institution and charisms, and Christology and Pneumatology in a charismatic context. It argues that the two emphases of the charismatic renewal, charisms, and the Holy Spirit, complement the institutional commitments of the church and ecumenism. The concepts of Christus praesens and Spiriti praesens are considered intrinsic to the charisms, and thus Christology and Pneumatology should both be considered significant for ecumenism. The study finally discusses the complementarity of ecumenical institutions and the charismatic renewal, the convergence of ecumenical streams, and continuity in modern ecumenical history.

Book Synopsis A Convergent Model of Renewal by : C. Wess Daniels
Download or read book A Convergent Model of Renewal written by C. Wess Daniels and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-02-20 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Convergent Model of Renewal addresses a perceived crisis for faith traditions. How do we continue to value tradition while allowing for innovative and contextual expressions of faith to emerge? How do we foster deeper participation and decentralization of power rather than entrenched institutionalism? Drawing on insights from contemporary philosophy, contextual theology, and participatory culture, C. Wess Daniels calls for a revitalization of faith traditions. In A Convergent Model of Renewal he proposes a model that holds together both tradition and innovation in ways that foster participatory change. This convergent model of renewal is then applied to two case studies based in the Quaker tradition: one from the early part of the tradition and the second from an innovative community today. The model, however, is capable of being implemented and adapted by communities with various faith backgrounds.
Book Synopsis Scripting Pentecost by : Mark J. Cartledge
Download or read book Scripting Pentecost written by Mark J. Cartledge and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-07 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scripting Pentecost explores and develops an analysis of worship and liturgy in Pentecostal and Charismatic traditions. Organized into three main sections, history, theology, and contemporary practice, the first section quarries the historical trajectories of classic Pentecostalism, the Charismatic movement, Third-Wave, and Oneness Pentecostalism. Particular attention is given to the liturgical approaches of some of the earliest leaders, including William J. Seymour, Alexander Boddy, and Aimee Semple McPherson. The second section, constructive theology, offers theological approaches to liturgical studies from Pentecostal and Charismatic perspectives. In this section the Pentecostal and Charismatic tradition is advanced and extended by an interaction with ecumenical sources. The third section, case studies in contemporary worship theology and practice, examines the actual performance of liturgy through selected global case studies chosen to reflect a diversity of ecclesial practice in Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, Latin America and Oceania.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book the author proposes the house church structure as a key to continuing renewal in the church today. After a biblical and historical look at the significance of the house church, the author looks at a model of ministry appropriate to that structure. In light of this model, the author develops a theology of renewal through the servant leadership of both women and men, personal and corporate giftedness, participatory worship, and community commitment.
