Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to bring the subject of language home to children at the age when knowledge is acquired in an objective way, by practice and habit, rather than by the study of rules and definitions. In pursuance of this plan, the traditional presentation of grammar in a bristling array of classifications, nomenclatures, and paradigms has been wholly discarded. The pupil is brought in contact with the living language itself : he is made to deal with speech, to turn it over in a variety of ways, to handle sentences ; so that he is not kept back from the exercise-so profitable and interesting-of using language till he has mastered the anatomy of the grammarian. Whatever of technical grammar is here given is evolved from work previously done by the scholar. - William Swinton.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1800, students have spent millions of hours learning English grammar. Students and teachers have toiled at parsing and analysis, dreading the English exam at the end of the year, as debate over the real value of learning grammar has raged. Nowhere have these arguments been as passionate as in the English-speaking colonies of Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. In 200 Years of Grammar, author Dr. Laurence Walker narrates a detailed history of the origins and evolution of grammar education and its relationship to English usage in Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. Walker presents a discussion of grammars educational signi?cance and provides a framework for how the context of the politics surrounding grammar teaching a?ects students and teachers. O?ering many applicable examples, 200 Years of Grammar gives insight into the issues with which English teachers around the world have grappled for years. It provides teachers, students, and those interested in the English language with an engaging history of grammar education from the introduction of state curriculum through to the twenty-?rst century.
Book Synopsis An Annotated Bibliography of Nineteenth-Century Grammars of English by : Manfred Görlach
Download or read book An Annotated Bibliography of Nineteenth-Century Grammars of English written by Manfred Görlach and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1998-11-15 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 19th century, education became accessible to much wider circles of society in a great number and variety of schools and the teaching of grammar came to be obligatory from 1870/72 with the advent of general education. Whereas these general trends of the 19th century are well-known to scholars working in different disciplines of social history, and the history of education in particular, it is still true that major sections of the evidence are largely uncollected. This is especially so for school books: there is virtually a gap between the 18th century and the present grammatical tradition. This bibliography lists some 1930 works on English grammar published in the 19th century, mainly in Britain and the US, half of which are accompanied by short descriptions of their physical make-up, content and affiliation.
