Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about the politics of representative democracy, written from the perspective of the politicians who make it work. Typically, political scientists study campaigns from the perspective of the voter and for the purpose of explaining election outcomes. But campaigns also need to be studied from the perspective of the candidate, for the purpose of understanding representation. Richard F. Fenno, Jr., traveled with ten U.S. senators as they campaigned in their home states-using what he calls the "drop in/drop out, tag along/hang around" method of research-to present a developmental picture of their activities. His focus here is on three such activities—pursuing a career, campaigning for office, and building constituency connections. Taken together, the three constitute the political underpinnings of representative democracy. Fenno describes the achievement, the testing, and the maintenance of representational relationships. He examines challengers and incumbents, winners and losers, and motivations, strategies, and behaviors; and he reports on differences, similarities, and patterns among them. In studying the candidates' varied careers, campaigns, and connections in stages and sequences and in depth—and in allowing us to hear them reflect on these experiences—Fenno has been able to offer rare insights into campaigns and elections, insights very different from conventional ones that concentrate on the behavior of voters. In its focus on the process of representative democracy, Senators on the Campaign Trail offers a rich, rounded, developmental view of some high-level individuals who work at the business of representation. For scholars, the book suggests some qualitative confirmation and added stimulation in forging generalizations about politicians. For citizens, the book argues for replacing the conventional blanket condemnation of our politicians, so prevalent today, with more discriminating judgments about what they do, and why and to what purpose they do it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A primer for a new generation of leaders based on the “Campaign Model” developed for Steve Jobs and Mike Murray at Apple Computer. The Leadership Campaign is a playbook for winning in the reality of today’s competitive global business environment. Each of the 10 steps it offers was learned on the most intensely competitive global battlefields. Thirty years ago, the authors were top-tier political consultants who could boast of a dozen presidential wins around the world. Candidates hired the authors’ company to apply to their political campaigns what the authors knew about business communication and marketing strategy. Then, in 1984, Steve Jobs asked them to build the “Campaign Model” for Apple, putting Jobs upfront as his company’s perennial candidate. This time, Jobs essentially asked the authors to apply what they knew about political campaigning to business. Continuously improved, the model has kept on working for their clients ever since, from Apple, Coca-Cola, and Citigroup to Verizon, Visa, and the Walt Disney Company. The Leadership Campaign will help you put these winning strategies to work for your company and your career. You will learn: Success-building communications skills used to train political leaders and CEOs around the world Proven strategies to take control of the competitive dialogue and never let go How to go for the win, the whole win, and nothing but the win for you and your company

Book excerpt: This book makes an original contribution to the fields of sociolinguistics, language planning policy and Chinese language studies. It examines the effectiveness of the Singapore’s Speak Mandarin Campaign in changing the language use of dialect speakers towards Mandarin.Singapore may be only “a small red dot” and barely visible on the world’s map. However, its complex and dynamic linguistic diversity and its quadrilingual educational system make it a unique and fascinating research site for examining deliberate language planning on the part of governmental authorities. 2017 marks the 38th anniversary of the Speak Mandarin Campaign, a focused language-planning policy aimed at changing the deeply entrenched sociolinguistic habits of Chinese Singaporeans who are used to speaking Chinese dialects. This book provides a revealing update on dialect speakers’ attitudes towards the campaign by including discussions and other related issues such as the recent call for the revitalisation of Chinese dialects by younger dialect speakers, Chinese students’ attitude towards learning Mandarin in schools, the encroachment of English in the home environment, the spread and dominance of English in the local linguistic landscape, and the challenges of maintaining Mandarin as a language of use and preference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political Campaign Playbook delves into a captivating exploration of the American political landscape, detailing its author’s life’s work inside politics and government by providing readers with the industry’s most valued and guarded information in terms of operating, successful political campaigns, and getting elected to public office. Its author, David Roberts, is a long time, political campaign operative, former government, bureaucrat, entrepreneur, historian, and activist. Roberts pulls from two decades of experience, working in democratic politics for high profile Candidates and Campaigns, including President Barack Obama‘s 2008 campaign, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee DCCC, United States Senator Blanche Lincoln, Congressman Mark Critz, Governor Brad Henry, and Governor Mike Beebe, just to name a few. Roberts idealism emphasizes the unique and transformative impact one individual's vote can have. The book compellingly conveys the importance of transcending animosity, adhere to moral principles and governing based upon better policy instead of political expediency. The book empowers its readers to get involved and help make our world a better place. Within its pages, Roberts engages in thought-provoking discussions on multifaceted aspects of politics. Notably, Roberts cautions those interested in running for office in his introductory paragraphs. He reminds us that your life will be fundamentally altered the moment you place yourself in that arena. Political Campaign Playbook exposes and details the full range of tactics, ethical and otherwise, that can be employed to reach electoral success. Inside the book Roberts provides useful exercises and papers meant to assist candidates and campaign operatives with planning the entirety of their campaign from calculating the necessary vote totals, and win numbers, down to messaging, advertising, and the use of political attacks as strategy. Political Campaign Playbook serves as the ultimate guide to running for office and winning. It contains insightful revelations, details strategy specifics, and provides an empowering message.
