Book excerpt: The Internet has become a powerful medium for Africans in the Diaspora to meet for cross border dialogue. Cameroonians all over the world are using this tool for what the present study considers to be a public-sphere discourse. Cameroonians living in the United States and other nations use the Internet to discuss and debate the polotical, social, economic, and cultural aspects of the nationhood of Cameroon with the aim of seeking solutions to some of those pressing needs that confront the country. This study builds on Habermas and other leading feminist authours' conceptualization of the democratic public sphere, which is central to Habermas theory of communicative action. This study's theoretical framework incorporates elements of the African experience in order to examine the dominant, oppositional, and parallel themes that arose from four Cameroonian websites just before the national presidential election in 2004. The methodology adapts Jager's critical discourse analytical (CDA) framework, which was deemed an approprate methodology because it sought not only to analyze the linguistic component of the discourse in the four websites, but more importantly to examine the holistic structure of the discourse that is its history and context. This study concludes that gender disparity existed in the dialogue between Cameroonian men and women. Cameroonian men were more dominant than the women in the discourse on the central themes involving the Cameroonian presidential election of 2004. The all female website was more focused on the infrastructural development of Cameroon. Lastly, these findings suggest that future studies should focus on the ways that the Cameroonians and other Diasporic populations utilize the Internet to create alternative discursive spaces for political and social purposes. With the current dire economic state, Cameroonians increasingly aspire to go abroad to make a living. Migrants achieve this through a collective (family) strategy and with the help of migration brokers. Relations between migrants and the family that stays in Cameroon can be characterized as follows: Families raise and educate their children to become adults. In return to giving their children the “gift of life”, families expect reciprocity, best secured through economic success abroad and the sending of remittances by migrants. As families in Cameroon heavily contribute to the funding of migration trajectories, often by selling properties such as land or houses or borrowing money, they also expect a return on their investments. All that constitutes this study explores under the notion of the moral economy of transnational remittances. In this study, remittances are understood to be a composite of financial, material, and cultural flows—maintaining and transforming social and kinship ties. The book proposes also a large exploration of themes in relation to transnational migration: why and how Cameroonians migrate (the role of the operational family in terms of decision and funding; the role of migration brokers through the identification of “lines” and the provision of the necessary papers); the moral justification for migration; the ways social relations and customs are changed by status gained through migration; the ways people explain the failure of migration projects, the difficulties to stay abroad; the matrimonial strategies to go and stay abroad. This is an empirically rich and theoretically sophisticated study that takes thinking on transnational migration informed by African strategies and experiences a step further.

They militated in pro-reunification political parties such as the KNC, KNDP, UPC and OK and successfully shifted the reunification idea from the periphery to the centre of Southern Cameroons decolonisation politics. The immigrants convinced the UN through petitions and reunification which was the most unpopular option for independence became one of the two alternatives at the 1961 plebiscite. They and the reluctant KNDP campaigned and voted for it. The Reunification of Cameroon was therefore the handiwork of French Cameroon immigrants.
