It aids in the stimulation of capital formation, innovation, and monetization, as well as the facilitation of monetary policy and plays an important part in the economic development of countries (Said & Tumin, 2011). It acts as a catalyst for achieving a long-term economic upswing through effective fiscal intervention. A financially sound system encourages investment by funding lucrative market niches, mobilising savings, efficiently dispensing resources and making commodity and service trading more convenient (Echekoba et al., 2014). During the liberalisation process in India, the banking industry has changed significantly. Since 1969, when the Indian government nationalised all major banks, the banking sector in India has been dominated by public sector banks.

Book excerpt: Banking industry serves as the backbone of the financial sector that accumulates saving from surplus economic units in the form of deposits and provides it to deficit economic units in the form of advances. So it is of great importance to keenly observe the performance of the banks and their compliance with the regulatory requirements. Performance of the banks is measured at two levels, one is at the management and regulatory level of the banks and another is at external rating agencies. It is of great importance that both these ratings present the same results about the condition of the banks to provide clear information to investors and management. CAMELS is the supervisory and regulatory rating system implemented by State Bank of Pakistan. It takes into account six important components of a bank when it evaluates performance of the bank. These components are Capital, Assets, Management, Earning, Liquidity and Sensitivity to market risk. PACRA rating agency is the dominant credit rating agency of Pakistan that performs ratings for most banks. In our research we examine the similarities in the results generated by CAMELS rating system and PACRA rating agency.

Book excerpt: The objective of banking sector reforms in India was in line with the overall goals of the 1991 economic reforms of opening an economy, giving a greater role to markets in setting prices and allocating resources, and increasing the role of private sector. In the following years, reforms covered the areas of (1) stabilization of banks; (2) partial privatization of state owned banks; (3) liberalization including interest rate deregulation, the reduction of statutory pre-emption, and the easing of directed credit rules; (4) changes in the institutional framework, and (5) entry deregulation for both domestic and foreign banks. The increased opportunities for the banks provided by the deregulation have extended their portfolios, but at the same time introduced new uncertainties and risks. The present paper aims at examining the performance of Indian banking sector using CAMEL framework. CAMEL stands for Capital adequacy, Asset quality, Management, Earnings and Liquidity. We have used the modified version of this framework in which one more factor has been included i.e., Systems and Control.

First, this book is an attempt to map the state of quantitative research in Asian tourism and hospitality context and provide a detailed description of the design, implementation, application, and challenges of quantitative methods in tourism in Asia. Second, this book aims to contribute to the tourism literature by discussing the past, current and future quantitative data analysis methods. The book offers new insights into well-established research techniques such as regression analysis, but goes beyond first generation data analysis techniques to introduce methods seldom – if ever – used in tourism and hospitality research. In addition to investigating existing and novel research techniques, the book suggests areas for future studies. In order to achieve its objectives the analysis is split into three main sections: understanding the tourism industry in Asia; the current status of quantitative data analysis; and future directions for Asian tourism research.

Book excerpt: The goal of this book is to assess the efficacy of India’s financial deregulation programme by analyzing the developments in cost efficiency and total factor productivity growth across different ownership types and size classes in the banking sector over the post-deregulation years. The work also gauges the impact of inclusion or exclusion of a proxy for non-traditional activities on the cost efficiency estimates for Indian banks, and ranking of distinct ownership groups. It also investigates the hitherto neglected aspect of the nature of returns-to-scale in the Indian banking industry. In addition, the work explores the key bank-specific factors that explain the inter-bank variations in efficiency and productivity growth. Overall, the empirical results of this work allow us to ascertain whether the gradualist approach to reforming the banking system in a developing economy like India has yielded the most significant policy goal of achieving efficiency and productivity gains. The authors believe that the findings of this book could give useful policy directions and suggestions to other developing economies that have embarked on a deregulation path or are contemplating doing so.
