Download or read book Geometrical Optics written by J. L. Synge and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1937-01-02 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is by no means easy for the applied mathematician to decide how much importance he should attach to the more abstract and aesthetic side of his work ... To all appearances, Sir William Rowan Hamilton (1850-1865) attached little importance to the practical applications of his method, and it was only with the publication of his Mathematical Papers that it was possible to form a more correct and balanced judgement of Hamilton as an applied mathematician.

Book Synopsis Fourier Transforms by : Richard R. Goldberg
Download or read book Fourier Transforms written by Richard R. Goldberg and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This tract gives a clear exposition of the elementary theory of Fourier transforms, so arranged as to give easy access to the recently developed abstract theory of Fourier transforms on a locally compact group. (This latter subject has important applications to the general treatment of unitary representations of the rotation group, the Lorentz group and other classical groups that is of value in quantum field theory and other branches of mathematical physics.) A knowledge of Lebesgue integration and, in one chapter, of Riemann-Stieltjes integration is assumed; the results needed are all stated in the introductory chapter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Barth-Harnack exchange is remarkably relevant to contemporary contestations of the proper method of Christian theology and its relation to the historical and social-scientific study of religion. The reissue of this translation, together with the expert analysis and assessment of H. Martin Rumscheidt, is a welcome event." --David Fergusson, Professor of Divinity and Principal of New College, University of Edinburgh

Book Synopsis Packing and Covering by : C. A. Rogers
Download or read book Packing and Covering written by C. A. Rogers and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1964-01-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Rogers has written this economical and logical exposition of the theory of packing and covering at a time when the simplest general results are known and future progress seems likely to depend on detailed and complicated technical developments. The book treats mainly problems in n-dimensional space, where n is larger than 3. The approach is quantative and many estimates for packing and covering densities are obtained. The introduction gives a historical outline of the subject, stating results without proof, and the succeeding chapters contain a systematic account of the general results and their derivation. Some of the results have immediate applications in the theory of numbers, in analysis and in other branches of mathematics, while the quantative approach may well prove to be of increasing importance for further developments.

Book Synopsis Gaussian Hilbert Spaces by : Svante Janson
Download or read book Gaussian Hilbert Spaces written by Svante Janson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-06-12 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book treats the very special and fundamental mathematical properties that hold for a family of Gaussian (or normal) random variables. Such random variables have many applications in probability theory, other parts of mathematics, statistics and theoretical physics. The emphasis throughout this book is on the mathematical structures common to all these applications. This will be an excellent resource for all researchers whose work involves random variables.

Download or read book Convexity written by Barry Simon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-05-19 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Convexity is important in theoretical aspects of mathematics and also for economists and physicists. In this monograph the author provides a comprehensive insight into convex sets and functions including the infinite-dimensional case and emphasizing the analytic point of view. Chapter one introduces the reader to the basic definitions and ideas that play central roles throughout the book. The rest of the book is divided into four parts: convexity and topology on infinite-dimensional spaces; Loewner's theorem; extreme points of convex sets and related issues, including the Krein–Milman theorem and Choquet theory; and a discussion of convexity and inequalities. The connections between disparate topics are clearly explained, giving the reader a thorough understanding of how convexity is useful as an analytic tool. A final chapter overviews the subject's history and explores further some of the themes mentioned earlier. This is an excellent resource for anyone interested in this central topic.
Book Synopsis Quantum Stochastic Processes and Noncommutative Geometry by : Kalyan B. Sinha
Download or read book Quantum Stochastic Processes and Noncommutative Geometry written by Kalyan B. Sinha and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-25 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classical theory of stochastic processes has important applications arising from the need to describe irreversible evolutions in classical mechanics; analogously quantum stochastic processes can be used to model the dynamics of irreversible quantum systems. Noncommutative, i.e. quantum, geometry provides a framework in which quantum stochastic structures can be explored. This book is the first to describe how these two mathematical constructions are related. In particular, key ideas of semigroups and complete positivity are combined to yield quantum dynamical semigroups (QDS). Sinha and Goswami also develop a general theory of Evans-Hudson dilation for both bounded and unbounded coefficients. The unique features of the book, including the interaction of QDS and quantum stochastic calculus with noncommutative geometry and a thorough discussion of this calculus with unbounded coefficients, will make it of interest to graduate students and researchers in functional analysis, probability and mathematical physics.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Analytic Number Theory by : Tom M. Apostol
Download or read book Introduction to Analytic Number Theory written by Tom M. Apostol and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-05-28 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is the first volume of a two-volume textbook for undergraduates and is indeed the crystallization of a course offered by the author at the California Institute of Technology to undergraduates without any previous knowledge of number theory. For this reason, the book starts with the most elementary properties of the natural integers. Nevertheless, the text succeeds in presenting an enormous amount of material in little more than 300 pages."-—MATHEMATICAL REVIEWS
