Book excerpt: "In arranging a book of extracts from the writings of men of science, two methods are possible. Passages may be chosen for their intrinsic interest or for their importance in the history of knowledge, but isolated from the less outstanding work that led up to and followed them. On the other hand, extracts may be taken to illustrate the development of definite subjects in the thought of succeeding ages. This volume is planned on the second method to tell a connected story. We have picked out threads on which to string our anthology of science the ideas of mankind on three problems of transcending importance: (1) the structure of the universe--cosmogony; (2) the nature of matter--atomic theories; (3) the development of life--evolution. Along these three lines we try to trace the thoughts of man from the inspired poetry of the Book of Genesis to the latest revelations of the telescope and the laboratory"--Preface.
Book Synopsis Science, Reading, and Renaissance Literature by : Elizabeth Spiller
Download or read book Science, Reading, and Renaissance Literature written by Elizabeth Spiller and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-05-27 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science, Reading, and Renaissance Literature brings together key works in early modern science and imaginative literature (from the anatomy of William Harvey and the experimentalism of William Gilbert to the fictions of Philip Sidney, Edmund Spenser and Margaret Cavendish). The book documents how what have become our two cultures of belief define themselves through a shared aesthetics that understands knowledge as an act of making. Within this framework, literary texts gain substance and intelligibility by being considered as instances of early modern knowledge production. At the same time, early modern science maintains strong affiliations with poetry because it understands art as a basis for producing knowledge. In identifying these interconnections between literature and science, this book contributes to scholarship in literary history, history of reading and the book, science studies and the history of academic disciplines.

This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays focuses on works by prominent poets and writers of the 19th and 20th centuries, with a particular focus on (post)Romantics and modernists. These authors belong to essentially different socio-historical, linguistic, cultural and geopolitical contexts, and the studies examine some of their emblematic texts from a comparative critical perspective. Edgar Allan Poe and Charles Baudelaire, William Butler Yeats and Percy Bysshe Shelley, Emily Dickinson and Marina Tsvetaeva are some of the paired authors, who, due to the originality of their thought and work, have come to be considered amongst the most significant literary figures of their contemporary world. The volume offers an original and insightful reading of the literary text as a powerful means of both representing and shaping the inherent dialogism of different cultures. As such, it transcends, in an imaginative way, the national, racial and cultural boundaries of human existence.
