This book was released on 1990-05-03 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise dictionary of organisms and their ecology contains over 10,000 entries on ecosystems, habitats, communities, populations, species, trophic structures, productivity, energetics, dynamics, associations, behavior, reproduction, and physiology. The taxonomy of plants, animals, monerans, protistans and fungi down to ordinal level is introduced, based on a modern system of classification favored by many workers. The definitions give brief details of structure, biology, distribution, diversity, common names, and taxa of special interest. For the majority of flowering plants and invertebrate animals the classification goes down to family level. Fossil groups are covered in a much more selective manner with an emphasis on vernacular names. Definitions are always clear and concise and the text is complemented by some 700 illustrations mostly of living organisms, but some showing biogeographical areas and a range of collecting equipment. This new dictionary has been developed from the authors' earlier work, Dictionary of Ecology, Evolution, and Systematics (Cambridge University Press, 1982), to produce a less specialized book covering a subject field that can best be summed up as traditional natural history.

A myriad of named astronomical objects, constellations, observatories and space missions are described in detail, as well as biographical sketches for 70 of the most luminous individuals in the history of astronomy and space science. Book excerpt: Biodiversity Conservation and Habitat Management is a component of Encyclopedia of Natural Resources Policy and Management in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. Biodiversity is declining worldwide at a very unprecedented rate as a complex response to several human-induced changes in the global environment. The magnitude of these changes is so large and their effects are so strongly linked to the altered ecosystem processes and to human (ab-)use of natural resources that biodiversity loss is today perceived as one of the most important issues that humankind should face with extreme urgency. Disseminating information, raising awareness, and propelling concern within a diversified target audience (general public, schools, local authorities, and government agencies) are also essential to develop shared responsibility and to encourage collaborative efforts and compliance. This has been the main objective of “Biodiversity Conservation and Habitat Management”. The Theme on Biodiversity Conservation and Habitat Management provides the essential aspects and a myriad of issues of great relevance to our world in eight major topics of discussion, and is focused on 1) History and Overview of Biodiversity Conservation and Protected Areas, 2) Management of Forests and other Wooded Habitats, 3) Management of Savannahs and Other Open Habitats, 4) Management of Wetlands, 5) Management of Tourism and Human Recreation Pressure, 6) Conservation Strategies, Species Action Plans and Translocation, 7) Captive Breeding and Gene Banks, and 8) Eradication and Control of Invasive Species. These two volumes are aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College students Educators, Professional practitioners, Research personnel and Policy analysts, managers, and decision makers and NGOs.

Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, poststructuralism in its myriad forms has come to dominate literary criticism to the exclusion of virtually any other point of view. Few scholars have escaped the coercive authority of its programmatic radicalism. In Evolution and Literary Theory, Joseph Carroll vigorously attacks the foundational principles of poststructuralism and offers in their stead a bold new theory that situates literary criticism within the matrix of evolutionary theory.
