Book excerpt: The early Chalukyas of Badami (c. 6th-8th centuries) are known to have built a large number of rock-cut and structural temples, scattered over the entire Karnataka. In this south Indian state, their distinctive monuments can be seen in Aihole, Badami, Pattadakal, Mahakuta, and a few other places. By the end of the 6th century, they had also excavated highly impressive rock-cut temples at Badami and Aihole. These Early Chalukyan monuments are of special interest - for they mark a transition from cutting into rock to free-standing constriction. They are distinctive for their architectural styles as well. In these religious monuments can also be perceived an intermingling of Dravida and Nagara idioms to produce schemes that combine myriad attributes, derived from different traditions. This splendid technical and stylistic variety is further supplemented by local architectural practices, which come to be blended with the more widespread Dravida and Nagara idioms. Apart from all this, these Early Chalukyan temples are remarkable for the sheer beauty of their figural and decorative carvings.00For the first time, perhaps, this book offers a comprehensive study of the Early Chalukya temples from the Central Karnataka region. With prefatory chapters on their historical backdrop, architectural nuances and sculptural art, George Michell meticulously examines both the rock-cut and free-standing temples of Badami, Mahakuta, Aihole, and Pattadakal – together with over a hundred of his measured drawings which, taken from his Ph.D dissertation, present an exhaustive graphic documentation, never attempted before. In addition, the book includes about 200 at-once-engaging photographs, taken by Surendra Kumar – a specialist in panoramic topographic views.00Dr George Michell is a widely reputed architect, who, in collaboration with John M. Fritz, has successfully completed numerous documentation and research projects at Hampi, Vijayanagara.

Book excerpt: The writings of K.V. Subbanna reveal the range, dimension and courage of an intellectual who never, ever, let the pressures of contemporary cultural politics affect his free and open enquiries into the nature of the culture of the land he was rooted in. K.V. Subbanna was an organic intellectual who drew his intellectual powers from a sense of community that was vibrant and alive and never from the context of a centralising nation-state and its dominant quality of homogenizing practically every aspect of social and cultural life. The spirit of decentralisation was what a community symbolised for Subbanna and all his writings – on literature, theatre, cinema, language – engender this vital principle of decentralization. For that matter even the smallest community was, for him, a complex, heterogeneous universe, quite autonomous at one level, yet, at another, an integral part of the entire globe... In other words, for Subbanna concern for the community also meant a deep commitment to the whole world for the two are part of, and grow from, each other. It was this faith in the 'local' and the 'global' that helped Subbanna locate Ninasam in Heggodu while drawing from ideas, thinkers, artistes from all over the world... This book contains three sections comprising several essays and lectures by Subbanna written and delivered at various points of time; an interview that he conducted and two interviews others conducted with him; and tributes paid to him by two individuals who are important cultural spokespersons of our times and happened to know Subbanna quite intimately. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perspectives in Indian History deals with the history of India from 10,000 BC until 1857 AD. It delves into the story of the Indus-Saraswati civilization and the development of the Vedas. Such a book has been written for the first time, wherein India’s history has been analyzed from the early Hindu period. Hitherto most history books have emphasized the Muslim period or the British period. These have been written by Muslim historians or European colonists, which was often skewed by their fundamental bias that no civilization could equal their own. During this retelling, the author covers the interesting aspects of each age starting with the Ramayana. He then examines hotly debated issues like whether Alexander the Great won or lost in India. The author carries out an analysis of the causes of the conquest of India by the Muslims. The author analyses detailed battleplans of major battles, which affected India’s history, like Panipat, Plassey, and many others, and discusses the weaponry and tactics used in these wars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hundreds of India's stunning temples are catalogued and copiously illustrated in this two-volume work loaded with color photographs. A brief introduction to the principal religious groups who have made their home in this dynamic region leads into a description of the developmental stages of various architectural components and artistic styles in the different regions over the past 1500 years, from pre-historic cave art and ancient temples hewn out of solid bedrock to more recent European-style Christian churches such as those in Goa. India's religions and historical turning points are briefly discussed, enabling readers who may be less familiar with Indian cultures to recognize the value of the region's cultural heritage. The author details the technological and artistic progress of Indian temple construction in the context of cultural and religious shifts throughout history. The four indigenous religions of India, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism, as well as Christianity, are each appreciated on their own merits. The Taj Mahal, the most famous, was declared a World Heritage Monument in 1983. It has been described lyrically as a tear drop on the cheek of time, poetry in marble, a dream in marble, and an image of paradise; and in such superlatives as 'the greatest achievement of all Indo-Islamic architecture, the most beautiful of all monuments made by the hands of man.' But the UNESCO World Heritage Center has also singled out a wealth of monuments that preceded and followed its construction, denoting them as important elements of the heritage of human civilization. In this work, researched through personal visits to World Heritage sites in India and the monuments associated with them, the author shares his enjoyment of the depiction of human beauty in decorative sculpture and architecture and the narration of mythology therein. This is one work bound in two volumes.

Book excerpt: In this book, “The Incredible Temple and Sanatan Sanskriti ”author has endeavored to focus on the hindu temples of Karnataka, Tamil Nādu, Kerala & Odisha. They are amongst the most ancient, architectural, archeological and heritage temples. These are eminently known for huge statutes, Mandapas, Towering super structures, Gopuram etc. They all Glorify Hindu Culture and scriptures viz. Puranas, Itihas, Vedas etc. The stories given there are vividly captured on more than life size carvings made from sandstone, soapstone, granite etc. One is awe struck how our ancestors created such masterpieces, with now considered, primitive tools and implements. This book is a tribute to our great forefathers who through their skills, dedication and pains taking labor over the centuries created such poetry in stone.
