Book excerpt: A landmark book by marine biologist Wallace J. Nichols on the remarkable effects of water on our health and well-being. Why are we drawn to the ocean each summer? Why does being near water set our minds and bodies at ease? In BLUE MIND, Wallace J. Nichols revolutionizes how we think about these questions, revealing the remarkable truth about the benefits of being in, on, under, or simply near water. Combining cutting-edge neuroscience with compelling personal stories from top athletes, leading scientists, military veterans, and gifted artists, he shows how proximity to water can improve performance, increase calm, diminish anxiety, and increase professional success. BLUE MIND not only illustrates the crucial importance of our connection to water-it provides a paradigm shifting "blueprint" for a better life on this Blue Marble we call home.

Book excerpt: A Recommended Read from: Vogue * USA Today * The Los Angeles Times * Publishers Weekly * The Week * Alma * Lit Hub A stunning and brutally honest memoir that shines a light on what happens when female desire conflicts with a culture of masculinity in crisis In her midthirties and newly free from a terrible relationship, Tabitha Lasley quit her job at a London magazine, packed her bags, and poured her savings into a six-month lease on an apartment in Aberdeen, Scotland. She decided to make good on a long-deferred idea for a book about oil rigs and the men who work on them. Why oil rigs? She wanted to see what men were like with no women around. In Aberdeen, Tabitha became deeply entrenched in the world of roughnecks, a teeming subculture rich with brawls, hard labor, and competition. The longer she stayed, the more she found her presence had a destabilizing effect on the men—and her. Sea State is on the one hand a portrait of an overlooked industry: “offshore” is a way of life for generations of primarily working-class men and also a potent metaphor for those parts of life we keep at bay—class, masculinity, the transactions of desire, and the awful slipperiness of a ladder that could, if we tried hard enough, lead us to security. Sea State is on the other hand the story of a journalist whose professional distance from her subject becomes perilously thin. In Aberdeen, Tabitha gets high and dances with abandon, reliving her youth, when the music was good and the boys were bad. Twenty years on, there is Caden: a married rig worker who spends three weeks on and three weeks off. Alone and in an increasingly precarious state, Tabitha dives into their growing attraction. The relationship, reckless and explosive, will lay them both bare.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is customary for pastors to urge their congregations to spend time with God in prayer. They know that this is of paramount importance, the one thing needful. But instructions given by pastors usually have to do with prayer for others or prayer for oneself. Rarely does one hear instruction on how, specifically, one can nurture and deepen one’s relationship with Jesus. This is the challenge that Alex Aronis has taken up in his book, Developing Intimacy with God Anchored on the spiritual classic The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, Alex has made the necessary adjustments to this sixteenth century text to maximize its contribution for modern readers. Thus, the book serves as a personal spiritual guide. It can be used for individual or group use and coaches the prayer over an eight-week period through a series of interactive prayer exercises. Aronis writes, "For disciples of Jesus, nothing in this world is of greater importance than experiencing intimate communion with Christ. It is our greatest privilege to know Jesus personally, and to let God love us as we commune with him on a daily basis. Developing Intimacy with God will teach you how to do that."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bold new look at war and diplomacy in Europe that traces the idea of a unified continent in attempts since the eighteenth century to engineer lasting peace. Political peace in Europe has historically been elusive and ephemeral. Stella Ghervas shows that since the eighteenth century, European thinkers and leaders in pursuit of lasting peace fostered the idea of European unification. Bridging intellectual and political history, Ghervas draws on the work of philosophers from Abbé de Saint-Pierre, who wrote an early eighteenth-century plan for perpetual peace, to Rousseau and Kant, as well as statesmen such as Tsar Alexander I, Woodrow Wilson, Winston Churchill, Robert Schuman, and Mikhail Gorbachev. She locates five major conflicts since 1700 that spurred such visionaries to promote systems of peace in Europe: the War of the Spanish Succession, the Napoleonic Wars, World War I, World War II, and the Cold War. Each moment generated a “spirit” of peace among monarchs, diplomats, democratic leaders, and ordinary citizens. The engineers of peace progressively constructed mechanisms and institutions designed to prevent future wars. Arguing for continuities from the ideals of the Enlightenment, through the nineteenth-century Concert of Nations, to the institutions of the European Union and beyond, Conquering Peace illustrates how peace as a value shaped the idea of a unified Europe long before the EU came into being. Today the EU is widely criticized as an obstacle to sovereignty and for its democratic deficit. Seen in the long-range perspective of the history of peacemaking, however, this European society of states emerges as something else entirely: a step in the quest for a less violent world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the storms of life threaten to overcome us, we find ourselves crying out to the heavens, "Lord, don't You care?" As our soul is capsized with heavy silence and we continue to pray for a miracle, God's answer comes in the form of a question, "Where is your faith?" "Be Still" uncovers the profound life-applicable meaning of the miracle, "Jesus Calms the Storm." Through this powerful message, your spirit will be submerged with hope, peace, and comfort, as you find your way to the back of the boat...resting with Jesus. Just like the Disciples, many times you find yourself so overwhelmed by your storm that you look right past the only One who can save you and who is always beside you-Jesus. As you gain a deeper understanding of this great miracle, you will find that when God allows a storm in your life...it comes with great purpose; if you miss the purpose, you may miss God's will for your life. So, let go of your fear by grabbing hold of your faith...let the storms come, and let the waters rise-God is taking you deeper. "Be Still" reveals that there is victorious calming in all of your storms of life, when you learn how to have faith in the One that controls them. "'Be Still' is a healing balm to the soul. My best advice-get this book, use it, and buy another one for your best friend!"-Jim Thomson, M.A., LCPC, author and speaker."'Be Still' is not a book that you read once, put on your bookshelf, and then forget about. It's a book that doesn't promise quick fixes, or endless sunshine. Instead, it is a lifeline attached to God's Word, designed to help the reader find peace in the midst of each and every storm that comes their way."-Deborah Porter, writer, editor, and radio talk show host.

Book excerpt: They camped the first night on a high plateau above the clouds. Having originally settled at nightfall into their individual bedrolls, they were awakened in the middle of the night by a chilling cold. The clouds, which had been situated well below them during the day, had ascended the dark, steep mountain slopes after sundown and now enveloped them. They got up, thoroughly chilled and wet, first Melanie then Jim, and joined the three Filipinos who were squatted around a blazing fire. "Cold!" Melanie said, crouching and extending her hands toward the flames. "Brr." "The fire soon make you warm," the first guide said. Man it's cold!" Jim said as he came up to the fire. "What happened?" "Clouds rise," the tracker said. "Tomorrow," the second tracker said, "we go into the valley." He pointed toward the steep slope on the side opposite to the way they had come up. "It will be easier. Trees do not grow toward the sun but straight out the side of the mountain and farther apart." "That's strange," Jim said. "This a strange mountain," the guide said. --from the story, ""The White Gibbons""
