Book Synopsis Hillinger's California by : Charles Hillinger
Download or read book Hillinger's California written by Charles Hillinger and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 150 charming and irrepressible stories covering all 58 California counties, drawn from a variety of likely and unlikely sources, including such vignettes as: a visit with Jack London's daughter; a chilly excursion into California's Switzerland; a profile of Death Valley's good Samaritan; Christmas in Yosemite; a look at that empire known as Disneyland; a view of Mt. Shasta, the sacred mountain; trips to an iron zoo, a Samoan cookhouse, a ghost town, a moaning cave, a mystery house; along with many more delights. Hillinger elaborates on the myths and legends that have grown up around particular people and places of California, along with profiles of famous characters associated with the state, such as Robert Louis Stevenson. But it's not the rich and/or famous that make this book so enjoyable -- it's the quirky descriptions of strange and surprising nooks and crannies throughout the state that many people in those very counties may not know about. These are beautifully rendered human interest stories by the author of Charles Hillinger's America, and like that book this will surely appeal to everyone, whether or not they happen to live in California. It's a book filled with lore and wisdom, history and anecdote, biography and fable, geography and myth. Included are numerous black and white photographs of the places visited by Hillinger, an author known as "the Charles Kuralt of print".

Download or read book California's San Joaquin Valley and the Appalachian Region written by Tadlock Cowan and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book undertakes a study of the San Joaquin Valley (SJV) and a comparison with the Appalachian region. The eight-county San Joaquin Valley, part of California's Central Valley, is home to 5 of the 10 most agriculturally productive counties in the United States. By a wide range of indicators, the SJV is also one of the most economically depressed regions of the United States. This book analyses the SJV's counties and statistically documents the basis of current socio-economic conditions. The book further explores the extent to which the SJV shares similarities with and differs from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) area and a 68-county Central Appalachian sub-region which contains some of the most economically distressed counties in Appalachia. The book also examines the role of federal expenditures in the cities and counties of the SJV. In addition to examining socio-economic conditions in the SJV, the book provides analysis of water supply and quality issues especially those concerning agriculture, air quality concerns, and rail and shipping issues. It is fully indexed.

Book Synopsis The Impact of Climate Change on Regional Systems by : Joel B. Smith
Download or read book The Impact of Climate Change on Regional Systems written by Joel B. Smith and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book works well as a reference for how one can examine potential climate change impacts in a subnational area. A clear strength of the work lies in the unifying framework that the climate, population, and, to a somewhat lesser degree, urbanization scenarios provide. Collectively, these appear to bracket a wide range of possible drives that will shape climate change impacts. The overall analysis takes a refreshing approach in that it does not try to fit all these elements and the subsystem impact assessments into one grand integrated model, but rather develops the assessments from a common base while allowing each to follow its own logic and scale. . . it provides a welcome overview of how one can conduct a multisystem, multisector climate impact assessment that combines natural, engineering, and social sciences in a rigorous format. Kris Wernstedt, Journal of Regional Science Climate scientists have determined that recent global temperature increases are due in large part to increased greenhouse gas emissions from human activities. Even if mitigation of these gases begins immediately, there is every reason to believe that climate change will continue to occur. Every region in the world ought to forecast, as the contributors do in this study of California (a region of broad variation and high population), how it will be affected by climate change and how it might best adapt. Models are used to estimate potential physical and biological impacts, efficient adaptations, and residual damages from climate change. The contributors cover a broad array of climate change impacts on affected market sectors (including water supply, agriculture, coastal resources, timber, and energy demand) as well as ecosystems and biodiversity. An integrated hydrologic-agriculture model is developed to explore how the region would adapt to changes in water flows. Interactions between climate impacts and population and economic growth, urbanization, and technological change are also explored. For example, the study examines how both climate change and projected land development affect the region s terrestrial ecosystems and biodiversity. The level of geographical detail, along with the broad applicability of the modeling, methodology, and conclusions, make this a unique and valuable reference for environmental economists, scientists, planners, and policymakers.
