Book excerpt: Abstract: This book presents the findings, conclusions, and recommendations of the Committee on Child Development Research and Public Policy within the National Research Council. The panel examined research and existing programs which address the areas of adolescent sexuality, pregnancy, and childbearing with the intent of making recommendations for policy making, program design, program evaluation, and research. The panel's report is presented in chapters addressing the following topics: trends in adolescent sexuality and fertility, society and changing roles of adolescents, determinants of sexual behavior, effects of adolescent childbearing, interventions, and priorities for data collection, research, policies, and programs. An accompanying volume contains the working papers on which the report was based. The working papers address three broad areas, which are: 1) influences on early sexual and fertility behavior, 2) consequences of early sexual and fertility behavior, and 3) programs and policies related to teen pregnancy and sexuality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: California has a large teenage population and a high number of teenage pregnancies. Predominately poor and low-income teens account for about 83% of mothers who give birth and become unmarried adolescent parents. Teen parents face a variety of complex health, education, and financial challenges. Additionally, their children are at risk for poor health outcomes, increased educational concerns, and behavioral problems. State and federally funded agencies and programs are available, but many adolescent pregnant and parenting students and their families in rural areas may be unaware of the support services. This project sought to develop a bilingual guide that will inform, encourage and assist pregnant and parenting students to access comprehensive support services. The guide has a focus audience that resides in a rural school district spanning three counties in Northern California. In the development of a constructive guide, eight adolescent parenting mothers and one pregnant mother answered questions concerning how many of the California Department of Education's nineteen allowable support services that they were receiving at their educational sites, and how their academic coursework was progressing toward high school completion. Nine support providers from pregnant and parenting school programs and from local county agencies were also interviewed. Information concerning the best practice of service delivery for adolescent students, their families and support providers was then arranged in an educational, teen-friendly, bilingual guide. The content of the guide includes topics on making an informed choice, learning how to take care of oneself while pregnant, things to learn before giving birth, important issues on parenting, educational rights of school-age students and programs concerning continuing education. In addition, internet links and phone contacts are provided to allow both the students and the professionals who work with them to access the programs, services, and the supports that they might require to meet their needs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2013, New York City launched a public education campaign with posters of frowning or crying children saying such things as “I’m twice as likely not to graduate high school because you had me as a teen” and “Honestly, Mom, chances are he won’t stay with you.” Campaigns like this support a public narrative that portrays teen mothers as threatening the moral order, bankrupting state coffers, and causing high rates of poverty, incarceration, and school dropout. These efforts demonize teen mothers but tell us nothing about their lives before they became pregnant. In this myth-shattering book, the authors tell the life stories of 108 brown, white, and black teen mothers, exposing the problems in their lives often overlooked in pregnancy prevention campaigns. Some stories are tragic and painful, marked by sexual abuse, partner violence, and school failure. Others depict "girl next door" characters whose unintended pregnancies lay bare insidious gender disparities. Offering a fresh perspective on the links between teen births and social inequalities, this book demonstrates how the intersecting hierarchies of gender, race, and class shape the biographies of young mothers.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Teen pregnancy rates are still rising in the Latino community while pregnancy rates for teens in ethnic groups have shown less of a decline over time. The knowledge of sexual health is lacking in the Latino community due to cultural and communication barriers. Therefore, the purpose of this project was to develop a school-based teenage pregnancy prevention program for Latino/a adolescents attending James A. Garfield High School in East Los Angeles, California. School-based prevention programs could potentially reduce the amount of teenage pregnancies occurring and better enable adolescents to complete their education. The California Wellness Foundation was identified as a potential funder due to its goals and mission being compatible with the proposed program. The proposed school based teenage pregnancy prevention program will provide teens and parents with knowledge and skills on how to effectively avoid pregnancy. The actual submission and/or funding of this grant were not required for the successful completion of this academic project.

Book excerpt: Published in 1997. Adolescent mothers are more likely to encounter a variety of economic and social ills than women who delay childbearing until they are adults. This work is a comprehensive examination of the extent to which these undesirable outcomes are attributable to teen pregnancy itself rather than to the wider environment in which most of the pregnancies and the subsequent child-rearing take place. It also examines the consequences of adolescent pregnancy for the fathers of children, and even more importantly, for the children themselves.
