Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The California sunshine’s not quite so bright for three sisters who get dumped in the same week ... Finola, a popular LA morning show host, is famously upbeat until she’s blindsided on live TV by news that her husband is sleeping with a young pop sensation who has set their affair to music. While avoiding the tabloids and pretending she’s just fine, she’s crumbling inside, desperate for him to come to his senses and life to go back to normal. Zennie’s breakup is no big loss. Although the world insists she pair up, she’d rather be surfing. So agreeing to be the surrogate for her best friend is a no-brainer – after all, she has an available womb and no other attachments to worry about. Except...when everyone else, including her big sister, thinks she’s making a huge mistake, being pregnant is a lot lonelier – and more complicated – than she imagined. Never the tallest, thinnest or prettiest sister, Ali is used to being overlooked, but when her fiancé sends his disapproving brother to call off the wedding, it’s a new low. And yet Daniel continues to turn up ‘for support’, making Ali wonder if maybe – for once – someone sees her in a way no one ever has. But side by side by side, these sisters will start over and rebuild their lives with all the affection, charm and laugh-out-loud humour that is classic Susan Mallery.

Book excerpt: For American photographer Sasha Eisenman, California connotes a state of mind and a way of life, conjuring not only golden light, blue skies, beaches, deserts, canyons and mountains, but also one particular image: the California Girl. Sasha Eisenman: California Girls captures this icon and her environment, investigating her representations through nudes and seminudes against beautiful Californian backdrops. Shooting entirely on medium-format film and dead stock Polaroid, Eisenman sought out a group of women who represented the unique style, personality and vibrancy of California and photographed them collaboratively, without styling, at backyard parties, surf trips and music shows. The images resulting from these shoots are collected here in Eisenman's first photo book. Each image is accompanied by an interview with its subject, allowing the viewer both a visual and textual entry into the sensuality, beauty, individuality and lives of the women photographed. Eisenman's work has appeared in magazines such as Dazed and Confused, Teen Vogue, Glamour, InStyle, Elle, Interview, Jalouse, L'Officiel, iD, V Man, Playboy, Spin and others, and he has photographed countless celebrities, from Lady Gaga to Jennifer Lawrence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lights! Camera! Action! Meet Belinda and Marilyn—two conservative, fun-loving California girls who are damn proud of their conservative beliefs and are very serious about saving America from Commie Liberals while riding around in red convertibles and listening to disco music. Belinda and Marilyn are California roommates who want to stop abortion and gay marriage and want to champion the ideas of organizations like the John Birch Society and the Tea Parties. They are dead serious about wanting to make Hollywood more conservative and constitutional and wind up meeting famous actors and directors in Hollywood. They want to open up a pro-life crisis pregnancy center in California to save the lives of innocent, helpless babies who are being killed through abortion. Belinda and Marilyn want to see the wall built but are also concerned about the unnecessary oppressive domestic spying that Edward Snowden uncovered. The conservative California girls meet Antonio—a gorgeous, charming Italian young man who will help them in their heroic efforts. Ditto Richard Gere—the very famous handsome actor who chooses one of the California girls to star in a sequel to the awesome film First Knight with Sean Connery. It was a movie that proved chivalry is not dead and that showed fighting for what is right can be very romantic and even thrilling. Read on as Eduardo Verastegui, the dashing, romantic leading man in the pro-life film Bella and even George Lucas of Star Wars fame get in on the action. It is Three's Company meets Michael Savage. If you're tired of people painting conservatives as dull and boring, this is the book for you! No retreat, no surrender. Jump in the flashy red convertible and blast the disco music. Conservative California Girls is the book we've all been waiting for!

At the start of summer, a lonely and thoughtful teenager, Evie Boyd, sees a group of girls in the park, and is immediately caught by their freedom, their careless dress, their dangerous aura of abandon. Soon, Evie is in thrall to Suzanne, a mesmerizing older girl, and is drawn into the circle of a soon-to-be infamous cult and the man who is its charismatic leader. Hidden in the hills, their sprawling ranch is eerie and run down, but to Evie, it is exotic, thrilling, charged—a place where she feels desperate to be accepted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ethnographic examination of Mexican-American and white girls coming of age in California’s Central Valley, Julie Bettie turns class theory on its head, asking what cultural gestures are involved in the performance of class, and how class subjectivity is constructed in relationship to color, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality. A new introduction contextualizes the book for the contemporary moment and situates it within current directions in cultural theory. Investigating the cultural politics of how inequalities are both reproduced and challenged, Bettie examines the discursive formations that provide a context for the complex identity performances of contemporary girls. The book’s title refers at once to young working-class women who have little cultural capital to enable class mobility; to the fact that analyses of class too often remain insufficiently transformed by feminist, ethnic, and queer studies; and to the failure of some feminist theory itself to theorize women as class subjects. Women without Class makes a case for analytical and political attention to class, but not at the expense of attention to other social formations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Saturday, June 27, 1959, Terry Huntingdon was crowned Miss California; less than a month later I became Miss United States of America, and two days after that I stood beside Akiko Kojima, Miss Universe, holding the trophy that I had been awarded for delivering the best speech at the pageant. In that address I spoke with great pride of my family background -- ten percent of the immigrants aboard the Mayflower in 1620 were my ancestors. I spoke of my relatives who, two hundred later, crossed the Isthmus of Panama to arrive in San Francisco during the California Gold Rush; and of the ancestors who were the first white people to settle in Wintun Indian territory. I talked about my great, great, grandfather, who had driven the stagecoach from Strawberry Valley to the Oregon border, forging the route now known as Interstate 5. The book then narrates television and motion picture careers during the year of my reign, includes social exchanges with the incomparable Bob Hope, American Bandstand performer, Paul Anka, Groucho Marx, of The Price Is Right, Ricky Nelsen, and his parents, Ozzie and Harriett, Los Angeles Sheriff Peter Pitchiss, Gunsmoke's James Arness, teen-throb crooner Fabian, bandleader Lawrence Welk, photographer Ernest Haas, San Francisco Chronicle columnist, Herb Caen, and my experiences as Hostess for the VIII Winter Olympic Games at Squaw Valley -- a tale laced with irony, humor, and of course romance, including attempts to lose my virginity, and equally passionate attempts to preserve it. The memoir concludes a few days after I relinquished my crown, when I flew back to L.A. to attend a party at the Biltmore Hotel for John F. Kennedy's top supporters following his nomination at the Democratic National Convention. There, I met Maryland delegate Joseph Tydings, who four years later was elected to serve in the United States Senate, and who, following an eight year courtship, became my husband.

Book excerpt: "The possibility of being a victim of a crime is ever present on my mind; thinking about it as natural as breathing."—40-year-old woman This is a compelling analysis of how women in the United States perceive the threat of crime in their everyday lives and how that perception controls their behavior. Esther Madriz draws on focus groups and in-depth interviews to show the damage that fear can wreak on women of different ages and socioeconomic backgrounds. Although anxiety about crime affects virtually every woman, Madriz shows that race and class position play a role in a woman's sense of vulnerability. Fear of crime has resulted in public demand for stronger and more repressive policies throughout the country. As funds for social programs are cut, Madriz points out, those for more prisons and police are on the increase. She also illustrates how media images of victims—"good" victims aren't culpable, "bad" victims invite trouble—and a tough political stance toward criminals are linked to a general climate of economic uncertainty and conservatism. Madriz argues that fear itself is a strong element in keeping women in subservient and self-limiting social positions. "Policing" themselves, they construct a restricted world that leads to positions of even greater subordination: Being a woman means being vulnerable. Considering the enormous attention given to crime today, including victims' rights and use of public funds, Madriz's informative study is especially timely.

Book excerpt: JAMES BEARD AWARD NOMINEE • A sharply crafted and unflinchingly honest memoir about gangs, drugs, cooking, and living life on the line—both on the streets and in the kitchen—from one of the most exciting stars in the food world today “Beautiful. Moving. Inspiring. Get it.”—Chris Storer, Emmy Award–winning creator of The Bear A SALON BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR Chef Keith Corbin has been cooking his entire life. Born on the home turf of the notorious Grape Street Crips in 1980s Watts, Los Angeles, he got his start cooking crack at age thirteen, becoming so skilled that he was flown across the country to cook for drug operations in other cities. After his criminal enterprises caught up with him, though, Corbin spent years in California’s most notorious maximum security prisons—witnessing the resourcefulness of other inmates who made kimchi out of leftover vegetables and tamales from ground-up Fritos. He developed his own culinary palate and ingenuity, creating “spreads” out of the unbearable commissary ingredients and experimenting during his shifts in the prison kitchen. After his release, Corbin got a job managing the kitchen at LocoL, an ambitious fast food restaurant spearheaded by celebrity chefs Roy Choi and Daniel Patterson, designed to bring inexpensive, quality food and good jobs into underserved neighborhoods. But when Corbin was suddenly thrust into the spotlight, he struggled to live up to or accept the simplified “gangbanger redemption” portrayal of him in the media. As he battles private demons while achieving public success, Corbin traces the origins of his vision for “California soul food” and takes readers inside the worlds of gang hierarchy, drug dealing, prison politics, gentrification, and culinary achievement to tell the story of how he became head chef of Alta Adams, one of America’s best restaurants.
