Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of job analyses for the position of entry-level, radio car patrol officer at over 200 California law enforcement agencies are presented. The analyses were performed between October 1977 and March 1978 to develop a job analytic data base for establishing the job-relatedness of employee selection procedures and practices. Most of the information was gathered through a job analysis survey instrument filled out by patrol officers and supervisors. Each agency was asked to choose at least 10 percent of its patrol car officers so that equal numbers had less than 3 and over 3 years of job experience, that equal numbers came from each shift, that different types of beats were represented, and that a substantial number of minorities and females were included. In addition, a supervisor with at least 1 year's experience from each of the three shifts was selected. The analysis types of incidents which required patrol officer response. The frequency of performance and importance of homogeneous groups of these tasks and incidents for each agency were calculated. In addition, the relative importance of 39 categories of work behavior for each agency was determined. The resulting report was individualized for participating agencies and included comparison figures for a group of similar agencies (in terms of size and type of agency) and for the entire statewide sample. This sample copy presents the results for an unnamed participating agency. Recommendations for the use of the data, lists of comparison groups, footnotes, five references, and data tables are included.

Participants also focused on a statewide job analysis of the police patrol officer position in Michigan, job task analysis of Minnesota patrol officers, Wisconsin's law enforcement standards for conducting job analysis, job analysis of entry-level police officers in Georgia and California, historical background of police training in New York, and essential elements in a comprehensive human resources program for criminal justice jobs.
Book Synopsis Job Analysis of the Entry-level Marshal/deputy Marshal Position by : John W. Kohls
Download or read book Job Analysis of the Entry-level Marshal/deputy Marshal Position written by John W. Kohls and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research project was designed to provide the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) and the various marshals' offices with a comprehensive job analysis data base for the position of marshal/deputy marshal. This data base describes the entry-level position and will be used to improve the job-relatedness of POST-required training. The job analysis was conducted by means of job analysis questionnaires comprised of task statements. Three hundred nine (309) entry-level deputy marshals and seventy-seven (77) supervisors of deputy marshals representing 19 of the 22 marshals' offices in California completed the questionnaires. Both frequency information (how often the tasks are performed) and importance information were collected on 560 task statements. The results show that the deputy marshal job is comprised of 260 "core" tasks which have statewide applicability. A comparison of these tasks with the "core" tasks performed by patrol officers indicates that there are both significant similarities and significant differences in the two jobs. These findings will be used in the development of appropriate training for marshals and deputy marshals.

Book excerpt: This report is based on the responses by 3,155 Ohio peace officers to a survey on the reports they file, the equipment they use, the tasks they perform, the sources they rely on, and the physical activities they undertake in doing their jobs are analyzed. Law enforcement in Ohio is dominated by white males in their twenties and early thirties. Further, patrol officers average 13.39 years of formal education, and 60 percent have completed at least some post high-school studies. About one-third of the respondents characterized their patrol areas as urban, another as suburban, and one-fourth as a combination of urban-suburban-rural. Less than one-tenth described their jurisdiction as rural. Several pieces of equipment are closely related with law enforcement patrol work: 95 percent reported using an automobile daily, and 88 percent reported carrying flashlights and handcuffs.

Book Synopsis Personality Assessment in Police Psychology by : Peter A. Weiss
Download or read book Personality Assessment in Police Psychology written by Peter A. Weiss and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2010 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, personality assessment by professional psychologists has taken on an increasingly important role in the field of police work. Most importantly, personality assessment instruments have been utilized in the pre-employment psychological screening of police officer candidates. This psychological screening takes place at the end of the hiring process to ensure that candidates do not have personality characteristics or existing psychopathology that would interfere with their job performance. Personality assessment is also used for other applications in police psychology. These applications include fitness-for-duty evaluations (FFDEs) and second opinion evaluations of officers who challenge hiring decisions. Moreover, police psychologists are involved in a considerable amount of research in order to determine which tests and scales are most appropriate for evaluations. The present volume is divided into four parts to cover the relevant issues in personality assessment for police work. Part I provides an introduction and the basic principles of personality assessment in police psychology. Part II focuses on the major assessment instruments used in police psychology. These include the MMPI-2, the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI), the Inwald Personality Inventory (IPI) and Hilson Tests, the M-PULSE Inventory, pre-offer integrity instruments, and the Rorschach Comprehensive System. Part III examines multiple issues in personality assessment research in the field of police psychology. Part IV covers applications of personality assessment in police psychology. These applications include pre-employment evaluations, fitness for duty evaluations, conditional second opinion psychological evaluations of candidates, using multiple sources of information when conducting mandatory or required evaluations, and the politics of personality assessment in police agencies. This unique and comprehensive text is designed for psychologists who are actively working in the field of law enforcement, including psychologists in both applied and research/academic settings.

Influential figures in the field of police psychology are discussed, including the nation’s first full-time police psychologist who served on the Los Angeles Police Department, and the first full-time police officer to earn a doctorate in psychology while still in uniform with the New York Police Department.
Book Synopsis Research in Law Enforcement Selection by : Michael G. Aamodt
Download or read book Research in Law Enforcement Selection written by Michael G. Aamodt and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the most comprehensive reference ever written for individuals interested in law enforcement selection. The chapters contain meta-analyses (statistical reviews of the literature) investigating the validity of methods used to predict police performance. These methods include education requirements, cognitive ability, background variables (e.g., military experience, arrest record, discipline problems at work), personality inventories, interest inventories, physical agility tests, assessment centers, and interviews. The first chapter in the book is a short primer on meta-analysis that informs the reader about the purpose of meta-analysis and how to interpret the meta-analysis tables contained in the book. Chapter 2 describes the methods used to conduct the meta-analyses for this project. Chapters 3-11 list the meta-analysis results for the various predictors of police performance. Chapter 12 describes a meta-analysis of the relationships among criteria (e.g., performance ratings, discipline problems, commendations), Chapter 13 describes a meta-analysis of the relationships among selection methods, and Chapter 14 describes a meta-analysis of the relationship between the various criteria and sex, race, age, and tenure. Chapter 15 summarizes the previous chapters and identifies future research needs.
