Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A portrait of how the 1990s round of redistricting treated the racial and linguistic minorities that had been given special protections by the Voting Rights Act of 1965, primarily African-Americans, but also Native Americans, Asian-Americans, and those of Spanish heritage. Throughout the volume, the primary focus is on the practical politics of redistricting and its consequences for racial representation. Almost all the authors have been directly involved in the 1990s redistricting process either as a legislator, a member of the Voting Rights Section of the Justice Department, a member of a districting commission, or, most commonly, as an expert witness or lawyer in voting rights cases. All bring to bear special insights as well as insider knowledge of Congressional and state redistricting.

Download or read book California written by Jeff Cummins and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-08-19 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CALIFORNIA: THE POLITICS OF DIVERSITY, 10th Edition, explores the uniqueness and excitement of California's political environment through two key themes: diversity and hyperpluralism. Experienced educators with backgrounds in state and local government, Lawrence and Cummins bring an informed, insightful perspective to the examination of the numerous pressures that make governing the state increasingly challenging. This edition offers new pedagogical features that drive home significant developments and events in California politics. The text is also written in an easily accessible way that provides examples particularly interesting to students. The new edition covers the final years in office of former Governor Jerry Brown and provides insight on newly-elected Governor Gavin Newsom’s administration. It also provides updated analysis of the state’s major policy areas, including water, housing, transportation, health care, K-12 education, higher education and climate change. No other textbook on California politics offers as much coverage and in-depth analysis of the state’s political development and institutions that have shaped the Golden State into what it is today.
Book Synopsis Campaigns and Elections by : Stephen K. Medvic
Download or read book Campaigns and Elections written by Stephen K. Medvic and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stephen K. Medvic’s Campaigns and Elections is a comprehensive yet compact core text that addresses two distinct but related aspects of American electoral democracy: the processes that constitute campaigns and elections, and the players who are involved. In addition to balanced coverage of process and actors, it gives equal billing to both campaigns and elections and covers contests for legislative and executive positions at the national, state, and local levels, including issue-oriented campaigns of note. The book opens by providing students with the conceptual distinctions between what happens in an election and the campaigning that precedes it. Significant attention is devoted to setting up the context for these campaigns and elections by covering the rules of the game in the American electoral system as well as aspects of election administration and the funding of elections. Then the book systematically covers the actors at every level—candidates and their organizations, parties, interest groups, the media, and voters—and the macro-level aspects of campaigns such as campaign strategy and determinants of election outcomes. The book concludes with a big-picture assessment of campaign ethics and implications of the "permanent campaign." New to the Fourth Edition: • Fully updated through the 2020 elections, looking ahead to the 2022 midterms • Covers the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the 2020 election as well as the January 6, 2021, insurrection at the US Capitol • Adds new sections in Chapter 3 on election integrity and the assessment of election administration • Reviews recent Supreme Court cases on gerrymandering and faithless electors • Expands coverage of social media as a source of news, of the increasingly partisan nature of the media, and of the role of media fact-checking in campaigns and elections • Reorganizes the chapters on the various actors so that the chapter on candidates leads directly to the chapter on campaigns • Fully updates the resources listed at the end of each chapter

Book Synopsis Vote Thieves by : Orlando J. Rodriguez
Download or read book Vote Thieves written by Orlando J. Rodriguez and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2011 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every ten years political representation in the U.S.House of Representatives is redistributed (reapportioned) among the fifty states. The process began anew with the 2010 census, which is counting the nation’s population as the basis for reapportionment. The decennial census has a history wrought with failures and inaccurate counts. In Vote Thieves, geographer Orlando J. Rodriguez shows how our current method of apportionment creates an incentive for illegal immigration and polarizes our political system. Historically it caused the end of the Federalist Party, bolstered slavery, disenfranchised African Americans after Reconstruction, fostered segregation in the South, denied voting rights to women, and disenfranchised voters in the presidential election of 2000. Since 1989, six congressional bills have attempted to change the population basis for apportionment; none passed. Currently under review in Congress, House Joint Resolution 53 would amend the Constitution to include only citizens in the apportionment base. The 2008 presidential platform of the Republican Party included a similar call to change the apportionment basis. This issue affects all U.S. residents--legal and illegal alike.Recent history has triggered a growing suspicion among Americans that their political system is flawed. Vote Thieves explains a singular flaw that voters suspect but cannot put in plain words, and gives them the information they need to petition for a more responsive political system.
