Book Synopsis Transportable Calibration Pads for Ground and Airborne Gamma-ray Spectrometers by : R. L. Grasty
Download or read book Transportable Calibration Pads for Ground and Airborne Gamma-ray Spectrometers written by R. L. Grasty and published by Geological Survey of Canada. This book was released on 1991 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Geological Survey of Canada has been involved with the calibration of ground and airborne gamma-ray spectrometers since it constructed the first calibration facility for airborne spectrometers in 1968. Recent analysis of the calibration data obtained from the GSC facilities at Uplands airport, Ottawa, showed that the calibration constants were poorly known because of uncertainties in the radioelement concentrations of the pads. To improve the Canadian calibration facilities for both ground and airborne gamma-ray spectrometers, small sets of transportable pads 1 m x 1 m x 30 cm and weighing about 675 kg were constructed specially for calibrating portable spectrometers in the summer of 1988. Because of problems of radon leakage and inhomogeneities in the pads, a new set of uranium pads was constructed in the summer of 1989. This paper describes the design and construction of these small transportable pads and shows how they can be used for the calibration of both ground and airborne gamma-ray spectrometers.

Download or read book The Design, Construction, and Application of Airborne Gamma-ray Spectrometer Calibration Pads, Thailand written by R. L. Grasty and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four concrete pads 7.6 m x 7.6 m x 0.5 m thick were constructed in Thailandfor calibration of airborne gamma-ray spectrometers. They comprised a lowradioactivity background pad, a potassium pad, a uranium pad and a thoriumpad. The background pad was constructed of masonry sand and cement, theuranium and thorium pads with a small quantity of uranium and thorium oreadded to the same background matrix, and the potassium pad from feldspar andcement. The uranium ore, from Canada, was in radioactive equilibrium and alow emanator of radon. The thorium ore, a separated monazite beach sand, andthe feldspar were both obtained in Thailand. This report presents a detailed account of calibration pad construction.
Book Synopsis Cyprus Crustal Study Project by : Geological Survey of Canada
Download or read book Cyprus Crustal Study Project written by Geological Survey of Canada and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1978, an international consortium of scientists from Canada, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Iceland, the United States, and West Germany successfully completed a research deep drilling project in Iceland. These scientists formed the International Crustal Research Drilling Group to organize further deep drilling investigations and to compare the results with those from the Deep Sea and Ocean Drilling Projects. From 1982-85, five holes were drilled at three sites in Cyprus to study the Troodos ophiolite. The drilling was part of an integrated petrological, structural, and geophysical study of the ophiolite, involving both field mapping and diamond drilling. This report is the third of three on the project, discussing holes drilled through the pillow lava succession and giving descriptions of the cores along with other geological, geophysical, and geochemical data.

Book excerpt: Treatise on Geophysics, Second Edition, is a comprehensive and in-depth study of the physics of the Earth beyond what any geophysics text has provided previously. Thoroughly revised and updated, it provides fundamental and state-of-the-art discussion of all aspects of geophysics. A highlight of the second edition is a new volume on Near Surface Geophysics that discusses the role of geophysics in the exploitation and conservation of natural resources and the assessment of degradation of natural systems by pollution. Additional features include new material in the Planets and Moon, Mantle Dynamics, Core Dynamics, Crustal and Lithosphere Dynamics, Evolution of the Earth, and Geodesy volumes. New material is also presented on the uses of Earth gravity measurements. This title is essential for professionals, researchers, professors, and advanced undergraduate and graduate students in the fields of Geophysics and Earth system science. Comprehensive and detailed coverage of all aspects of geophysics Fundamental and state-of-the-art discussions of all research topics Integration of topics into a coherent whole

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The calibration of field gamma-ray spectrometers require radioactive sources of effectively infinite size. Five large radioactive calibration slabs have been constructed for this purpose and the techniques used to determine the sensitivities and Compton scattering coefficients of field gamma-ray spectrometers are described. Results obtained for 3 gamma-ray spectrometers, used by the Geological Survey of Canda, are presented.

Book Synopsis Developments in Geophysical Exploration Methods—3 by : A.A. Fitch
Download or read book Developments in Geophysical Exploration Methods—3 written by A.A. Fitch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the themes in current geophysical development is the bringing together of the results of observations made on the surface and those made in the subsurface. Several benefits result from this association. The detailed geological knowledge obtained in the subsurface can be extrapolated for short distances with more confidence when the geologi cal detail has been related to well-integrated subsurface and surface geophysical data. This is of value when assessing the characteristics of a partially developed petroleum reservoir. Interpretation of geophysical data is generally improved by the experience of seeing the surface and subsurface geophysical expression of a known geological configuration. On the theoretical side, the understanding of the geophysical processes themselves is furthered by the study of the phenomena in depth. As an example, the study of the progress of seismic wave trains downwards and upwards within the earth has proved most instructive. This set of original papers deals with some of the more vigorous developments in subsurface geophysics: and it is hoped that it will contribute to the understanding of geophysical phenomena in the solid. The editor thanks the busy workers in the several fields who have made time to produce these contributions.
