Scientists and engineers have now proved the validity of determining the moisture content and density of engineering materials by means of radioactive gages. Even though the ability of the nuclear-type gage to measure moisture and density is generally acknowledged, there are still a number of questions that need answering. One such question involves an appropriate method of calibration and recalibration of the gage. Another question is whether the experimentally determined calibration curves remain valid with varying soil constituents. Initial work involved in the calibration of moisture and density probes required masses of soil that represented an infinite volume. Satisfactory portable standards have now been made to calibrate neutron moisture probes.

To provide a reasonable basis for optimization, all identified errors were combined to yield a single criterion, the quality factor, which can be used to evaluate the over-all performance of a nuclear density gauge. Research aimed at minimizing moisture content measurement errors involved using the Monte Carlo or random walk method to simulate gauge response, checking the results of the simulation against experimental studies, and attempting to generalize the Monte Carlo results.

This report describes surface-type nuclear equipment, procedures, and various test methods used for making shallow-depth moisture and density determinations in place on soil and soil-aggregate mixtures. In general, a 6-in. direct transmission density test using a properly operating nuclear gage and an up-to-date factory calibration curve will yield test results slightly better than those of conventional density tests. The nuclear test is simpler to perform than conventional tests and requires only about 15 min to obtain both a density and moisture test result. (Modified author abstract).

It was written as a practical professional guide for geotechnical engineers working with residual soils. The second edition has retained the valuable information contained in the first edition. The present editors and authors have extensively revised and augmented the content to bring it completely up to date, adding significantly to the sections on unsaturated soil mechanics and expanding the range and number of instructive case histories. Furthermore, sections on pedocretes, dispersive soils and karst have been added.
