Download or read book An Air Fighter's Scrapbook written by Ira Jones and published by Casemate / Greenhill. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic memoir of the early days of aviation by a longtime Royal Air Force pilot, including his harrowing, exhilarating adventures in the Great War. Ira “Taffy” Jones was a well-known air fighter during the First World War, having scored about forty victories flying SE5 scouts in France with 74 Squadron. Familiar in flying circles, Jones recorded stories drawn from his own experiences during the war and wrote of the many personalities he had met or known by association, both during the war and in the postwar flying years. An Air Fighter’s Scrapbook recreates the atmosphere of the days of the biplane, of wartime flying, of early peacetime adventures in the air, the development of civil aviation, and breathtaking record-beating flights—all evoking the sheer delight in flying that characterized those early years.

Book excerpt: Caledonia, just south of Hamilton, has a history closely tied to the heritage of the Grand River. From the Grand River Navigation Company of the 1830s to the current nine-span bridge in the centre of town, the river and the community have shared a special relationship. Intriguing entrepreneurs, town characters and prominent citizens have touched the life of Caledonia, leaving a legacy that is fascinating, sometimes amusing and richly anecdotal.

Book Synopsis Becoming Native in a Foreign Land by : Gillian Poulter
Download or read book Becoming Native in a Foreign Land written by Gillian Poulter and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did British colonists in Victorian Montreal come to think of themselves as “native Canadian”? This richly illustrated work reveals that colonists adopted, then appropriated, Aboriginal and French Canadian activities such as hunting, lacrosse, snowshoeing, and tobogganing. In the process, they constructed visual icons that were recognized at home and abroad as distinctly “Canadian.” This new Canadian nationality mimicked indigenous characteristics but ultimately rejected indigenous players, and championed the interests of white, middle-class, Protestant males who used their newly acquired identity to dominate the political realm. English Canadian identity was not formed solely by emulating what was British; this book shows that it gained ground by usurping what was indigenous in a foreign land.
